This is a MK I fretless from 1987 number W2977 Although I'm really pleased with the sound I do prefer a fretless with dots inbetween the lines (like on a fretted bass). I don't want to modify anything about this bass and I find myself sliding into wrong places (especially in the high register) because of the dots which are on the lines. Having a luthier change the place of the dots is not really an option I'm fond of. I know that fretless Pro Wal basses have the dots on the normal place so I would be interested in a trade + some extra cash (from the buyer :-)). Sorry but not really interested in other trades..Price I'm asking is 2350 euros. It comes with a flightcase made in High Wycombe and it can be picked up in the Brussels area or it can be shipped (the flightcase could make it more expensive to send). If possible I would prefer a local pick-up but I know that's not the easiest thing to do. The bass is currently strung with flatwounds, has a great tone imo and has all the ingredients that a Wal bass has to have.. Feel free to email me for more info or pictures which you would like to see.. Some pictures and a small YT-thing (sorry that I forgot my stockings) which gives an impression of the sound (says more than writing about it) : Thanks for looking Geert

I bought this a while ago from a fellow BC'er (Pierre G.) since I was always intrigued by these beautiful basses.. I found myself not picking it up too often since I still favour my fretless Pedulla.. Maybe I also have to admit to myself that a fivestring fretless is no longer a thing to have (four seems to be enough for what I do). This still is a great instrument with a beautiful tone and a nice finish.. It comes with a F-gigbag, an extra set of strings and an F-strap.. Price is 1800 euros..(new these cost around 3000 euros) Bass can be collected here around Brussels or it can be send..I have a good feedback around here on BC. Not really looking for trades or it would be a nice Wal fretless (possibly a Pro) with dots between the lines (like on a fretted bass). Thanks for looking... Some pictures and a small clip to give an impression (sloppy intonation, could be better ..I know)

Unfortunately no, Oliver I already contacted Mark two weeks ago but the dots are on the lines...
If you like the bass except for the side dots, why not get a good luthier to change the dots? They could add dark wood (ebony?) where the current dots are and add new white dots 'between the frets'. Would be the simplest solution, rather than trust to another bass that may not play as well for you
That could be a solution but I don't like modifying these fine basses.. I think the easiest solution is to get back to a Pro-fretless with one pick-up (I used to have one but sold it because I enjoyed Pedulla basses for a while) since those Pro-basses seem to have those dots on my preferred place. Also my eyesight isn't getting better so I need all the possible help I can get..

Thank you.... When I got this bass it came with flatwounds and normally I just hate those.. But funny enough they work really well on this bass and that Brand X-sound comes closer to mind..

We've emailed a couple of times and he said that he would contact me as soon as he has a fretless bass ready so I can check it out and we can determine the specs...he's very busy since he said something that he has to move. There's a clip of the bassplayer of the Spin Doctors and I'm thinking in that direction when I look at that model. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pB2YxJ7Vxcw Strings I use are usually D'Addario's Nickel 40-100...I also use them on my Wal basses.

"Can you keep the volume down during the first two or three songs ?...the people are still eating their dessert" Or the person who booked the band comes into the dressingroom before the gig while you are still eating around a table which is too small and says (while he lays his hand on your shoulder) : "Are you ready to give us an amazing time !!"

Great basses... congratulations. I just bought an old Wal of mine back, it's a november 87 Shedua fretless.. To be honest though it's not really intended to be a keeper.. I have "problems" with fretless basses which have the dots on the lines along the side, I want to have the dots in the "regular" position like on a fretted bass. It confuses me when I'm playing and I'm a bit lost on the neck.. So actually the plan is to trade this in if possible for a Wal fretless with the dots between the lines.. There's no hurry since I have other fretless basses but if the "right" fretless comes along I wouldn't hesitate. I took some pictures and recorded a short YT-clip (only the back pick-up (position 4, my favourite))

Thanks.. I contacted Nikola to make me a nice singlecut fretless. Looking forward to it ! Good luck with the basses and thanks again for the feedback.. To be honest I'm using Epifani amps and Bergantino speakers for the moment and the bass sounds better with this combination..

I'm pretty sure that Palladino used a fretless Pedulla Buzz on "Playhouse down"..

Which mainstream artist would you like to play for?

James Taylor...also because he has an audience that listens and not only wants to be "entertained" -

I don't feel insulted at all and I'm from Belgium...:-) Maybe not everybody's humour but I thought it was rather funny.. it referred a bit imo to "I'm from Barcelona". To be honest I have also received quite some puzzling posts from certain areas and I thought they were pushing the limit a bit but you learn how to deal with it.. If I'm correct I already bought a bass(wasn't it the mocha Fender ?) from the seller (bought a lot of stuff around here with very correct people).. Good luck with your sale !

For those times that you just need that tiny bit more :-)

Recently changed to this stack...two Bergantino's AE2X12 (which I bought from Bass Direct, Mark is great to deal with) and an Epifani UL902 which delivers twice 900 W into 4ohms.. Very loud but still a very portable stack. A very warm mellow sound but still with plenty of definition and punch.. I thought 10" inch speakers missed a bit of warmth in the end so this is just ideal for me.

If You Could Have 1 Hour With Any Living Bass Player.....?

Paul McCartney (without his press-agents)... just about the rollercoaster he's been on for the last 50 years and what is still important to him as a musician or as a "simple" human being. -
I've been following Wooten from the beginning but he keeps on amazing me... huge influence on how you can use your bass. Not that I can copy this but only a tenth of his ideas gets you started
