1. I guess it depends what you're after. horses for courses and all that. I love the warm, thumpy-yet-still-growl-when-you-dig vibe that yuo get with worn in Rotosounds. Other guys will like them when they are clangy and fresh, other guys will avaoid them like the plague. I personally really dislike EB Slinkies yet they are probably the most popular strings our there!
2. What about Rotosound flats? I have a set on my Precision at the moment. Not sure I'll keep them on for long though. They sounded great when recording EofF's acoustic demo but I've been unhappy with them in rehearsals thus far and haven't gigged them yet. Also find them quite hard to play.
3. They might as well call the strings Marmite Bass 66, people seem to either love them or hate them! Personally, I love them. Regardless of which other strings I try, I always end up going back to Rotos. You're right, they do feel rough at first but this soon wears off, and once they are worn in there are no strings out there which I would rather be playing, for feel or sound. Still, that doesn't stop me from looking for something which can better them! As for fret wear, this is not something that I have noticed that much of myself, but then I'm not too meticulous with my fret maintenance. A quick once over with a splash of Mr Sheen does it for me!
4. It's the highs that shout Stingray at me, whenever I hear the piercing clacky, almost noisy treble that sounds separated from the low end. To me that is the Ray sound. Not sure how other MMs compare tbh but must be similar. Check out Naked by Reef - you can hear the zingy treble in the middle of the mix and the rest of the bass is at the bottom.
5. Sunny weekend pre-BBQ bump. Will happily trade for a nice little combo or maybe a Squier bass or something similar. All trades considered!
6. I use my DHA VT1 Bass Drive-EQ which is on my pedal board and I also use for my DI so it gives a close representation of my FOH sound. I also own a Zoom B3 which I use at home to practice with the drum machine and experiment with funky effects and generally make noise
7. I agree with Discreet, I certainly wouldn't molest my pride and joy precision!! For the cost and effort of doing that it may be worth investing in another bass? One with a different pickup configuration, PJ JJ MM etc
8. Bought Paddy's Ashdown ABM 500 Evo II. Great amp, great price, great fella. Pleasure doing business!
9.
Fellaz thanks for warm welcoming \\m// Whoever still up for an extra cold beer. This Friday Central London at The Intrepid Fox 20:00 The subject is closed!
If I lived in London I'd happily join you (assuming that I'm welcome after my last post on this thread ) I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be a callous ballbag, nor did I notice that you are a new member so, firstly, welcome to Basschat! In my (now even more) humble opinion, it really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things as to which way you pluck the strings. As long as you are playing to complement the music then you are doing it right. It doesn't matter whether you do one or the other but if you can do both and apply each to their optimum then all the better for it! I use both and do whichever I feel most complements the music I am playing. Sorry if I came across a tit, it really wasn't my intention.
10.
Playing bass with a pick or fingers which gives more groove? which shows you are more talented? which is more respected?
More groove - doesn't matter More talented - doesn't matter More respected - doesn't matter This is a pointless, irrelevant and frankly bullshit debate tbh
11. GHS Brite Flats are pretty good (groundwounds, not flats!!) feel really weird at first but once you get used to it they are good strings. In all honesty though, flatwounds might be worth a go! Geezer Butler and Ben Shepherd both use flats as does Cliff Williams
12.
I use the mobile site from my iPhone, is there any way of uploading pictures? Switching to the full site doesn't work
My problem exactly! Was just wondering if there was an app of some sort or if any forum apps are compatible. I use the mobile version of the site the majority of the time which is fine for general posting but it's a pain that I can't seem to upload photos from my phone. [edited for spelling - predictive text my arse!]
13. Does such a thing exist?
14. Sad day for music, two greats gone - and Duck Dunn recently too I wonder if there are any musicians in the current generation that will be held in such high regard when they pass? I highly doubt it. These guys were pioneers, the likes of which will never be seen again.
15. Would you trade for my Marshall MB450H? I'm in mid Cornwall so we could meet for a trade
16. Nicely done! From my experience so far, I'd say the ideal number of basses to own is always one more than you already have. What are shoes, some sort of ornament?
17. I seem to remember one of the guys in Hartnoll's in Plymouth saying that they offer interest free finance. They have shops in Torquay and Taunton as well.
18. Selling my trusty Marshall MB450H head. Owned from new since early 2009 (pretty sure I still have the receipt somewhere) the usual aesthetic damage associated with gigging gear but nothing major. Still in full working order and includes footswitch. Seperate SS/valve preamp channels with blend feature (all footswitchable), Gain boost feature on 'Classic' valve channel (not footswitchable - nice one Marshall! ) will throw out 450W @ 2ohms, 300W @ 4ohms, 150W(ish)@ 8ohms. Speakon/Jack outputs. Cheers you lovely low-enders! Joe Edit: Photos added 20/07/12
19.
At the risk of being controversial i don't like new string day Too bright and clanky. I love the sound of strings after about 10 hours of playing. Then they sound cool.
I concur, hence why I believe New Strings Day should be a bank holiday, so that we can spend 10 hours breaking them in! (not that it would make any difference to me as somebody who works on bank holidays anyway... Ahh the joys of tourism!)
20. Ahh drop C#, also known around these parts as Drop Doom I should think that the reason many guys play in drop tuning rather than a 5-string is to do with how riffs are written. Many of the EofF riffs are in drop D and it's a lot easier to play them as such rather than stretching around 5-strings. I do enjoy having some extra low notes handy though when playing a 5er. Funnily enough, I have never used my 5 string for metal, I've only ever used it with Mehal playing acoustic rock!
21. Near the end of an increadible weekend for me. First up Friday - Empire of Fools opening the show at the Cheese and Grain, Frome, suporting REEF!! G Got there to find everything running about 20 minutes late with no sign of the other support band. By the time Reef had done their sound check and the other support band fannied around with their gear it had gone 8;00 (doors time) before we had even got our gear anywhere near the stage! We went on at about 8:20 in the end, literally plug in and play! Crowd was amazing though, I wasn't expecting such a positive reaction - the venue capacity is 850 and I think we must have had at lest 650 watching us and loving it! Band played really well despite complete lack of sound check - it's a good job in these situations that our drummer uses a click track! Sold loads of CDs, got loads of positive response from the audience after the show, impressed promotors and met all the guys from Reef. Nice bunch of blokes really, not so sure why they couldn't use the toilet in THEIR dressing room though... Saturday - Wedding with the wedding band (Slipstream for tonight) at Widemouth Manor Hotel, Bude. Straightforward wedding really - wait for meals/speeches, manouver gear around tipsy old people etc etc. Bit of a slow burner - everyone hit the bar after the first dance (Beatles - I Feel Fine) and I made a bit of a foul during By The Way when tuning down to drop D.... forgetting that I was in Eb (having played the same bass in standard tuning the night before) but luckily nobody noticed Everybody was up dancing for the 3rd set though...almost fealt bad for setting off the fire alarm with the smoke machine......... Now tonight I'm watching Blink 182 at the Eden Project (after I finish, I work there see )
