1. I've been buying and selling a few things on BC of late, so thought I'd better start a feedback thread. Cheers All!
2. Here's my fledgling pedal board, built around a pedaltrain junior courtesy of SK8 off the classifieds. At the moment its just got my basics for gigging (volume pedal, compressor and A/B box for switching between two basses), plus an overdrive pedal that I'm yet to use in anger. Its powered by a Harley Benton powerplant Jr, which was stonking good value for an isoluated PSU. In the future I'll probably add the following: - Aguilar Octamiser (ordered and currently on a USPS slow boat from the states) - TC Electronics Polytune Classic - 3Leaf Wonderlove - MXR Chorus Deluxe Then I'm done with the effects game. For real. ...oh who am I kidding... Longer term, I can imagine myself adding this lot too... - 3Leaf Enabler (preamp/di/headphone amp) - Some form of low gain tubey OD (Darkglass VM, Carl Martin Bass Driver, COG Knightfall 66 are on the shortlist) - Upgraded power supply - Buffer (if req'd)
3. I'm in the same position of the OP...been playing covers for years and the band where we write our own stuff, I very slowly work out my lines by hearing them in my head and working out the fret positions. I know that right now I'm more of a bass karaokeist than a fully fledged creative musician who can improvise on the fly or write really good bass lines. While learning theory isn't going to be a magic bullet, I'm starting to get to the point where I feel that I need to start learning theory in order to become a better musician. The problem is, every time I've tried this in the past its failed miserably as it felt too much like doing homework and I quickly lost interest. Not sure what I'm going to do this time round to stay motivated...any suggestions from people who've been there would be welcome!!!
4.
For home use I reckon any of these heads will be too much, you may not get the full potential from them due to having to run them so quietly. I`d look at the new Fender Rumble combos - the 40 watt version has overdrive, vintage voicing, and a contour (which scoops the sound I believe). Fender bass amps usually have a nice warm voicing, so think it should be comparable to the OBT - there`s a vid clip on the link below which gives an idea of tones available (try at about 1min for some driven tones). http://www.fender.com/series/rumble/
I use my shuttle 6.2 for quiet home practice and it's fine. The pre amp has a separate vol knob so you can fine tune it to a low vol. The shuttle and streamliner are both great heads for home practice, albeit a bit over the specced for that kind of application.
5. Yeah I had a Fenix Jazz as my first bass, bought it in around '91 from a second hand shop in Tooting (London) for the princely sum of £90. It was a good playing bass, really nice action. The electronics were so-so from what I remember, not bad, but a bit of hum. I only played it for a year or two before saving up and getting a Musicman Stingray and it never saw the light of day after that....its been on permanent loan to a friend for the past decade or so. But a great bass for the money.
6.
Have you taken it apart at all? Does it look like the sort of thing that could be fixable if you hit it carefully with a hammer?
I've had a look inside, the problem is that the circuit board runs the entire length of the pedal. This thing really is built like a tank, the downside is that you'd need to be able to exert a fair amount of force to push the dent out from the inside and the circuit board gets in the way of that. I'd buy on the basis of the dent not being fixable, but someone with the right tools, patience and mechanical aptitude could probably fix.
7.
Hi Migsta. If this is still available at the end of the month I'll have it off you.
Cheers, will let you know.
8. Lovely. Saw this one on the acg site and I was thinking that it was the nicest looking acg that I've seen. How does it sound? I'm thinking of treating myself to a five string in a couple of years time when I hit 40, but it's a toss up between something more traditional like a Lull or Nordy Jazz bass or this. The ACG is a stonking bargain for full custom and nice woods under 2k.
9. I'm planning on building a small pedal board with a Harley Benton 5 x isolated power supply. I've got a passive Fender ABY pedal (this only needs power if you want the LED indicators to show) and am also planning on having a TC Polytune tuner. To save on power outputs, I'm going to daisy chaining these two to a single 9v power cable, while the 3-4 effects pedals i'm running will have their own isolated power. In theory, given that one's passive (the ABY) and the other will be bypassed most of the time (tuner) could I expect to be impacted by the potential negative effects of daisychaining the power for this set up? I hear that this can sometimes cause hum/interference. Thanks for your help!
10. **** Now sold pending payment **** Hi Guys, I'm selling my Zoom B9.1UT multi effects pedal. Its in great condition overall, but the volume pedal is damaged hence the lower asking price. This pedal's had lots of coverage on basschat so I won't give a spiel other than to say that its built like a tank and has all the widgets and connectivity to make it your all-in-one command and control centre for your bass conquests. Unfortunately it also needs a degree of intelligence and technical aptitude to get the most out of it, which is why I am selling on. http://www.zoom.co.jp/products/b91ut It comes with power adapter and manuals, but no box. The unit was bought new from GAK and is 20 months old. It has had very little use and is in very good condition but with one notable point... It took a knock last summer when a speaker fell on it. The volume pedal took the force and the chassis below it got pushed in by about 5mm (see second pic). As a result the vol pedal has lost about 50% of its travel and is at an angle on one side. All other functionality works fine and I'd expect whoever buys this to get many good years out of it. Asking for £50 for pick up from South West London or Surrey/Leatherhead. I also work in central london occasionally or can arrange postage at buyer's cost (will probably be around a tenner). All the best, Ming

Feedback for sk8

Bought a pedaltrain junior from Sk8t in Sept 2014. He's one of the good guys - great communication, item was mint as described and quick, secure postage.
12. In two on a part time basis. One's a bedroom prog metal project where we only meet about once a month on average, the other is a pub covers band where we'll go quiet for several months then have a series of gigs over a few months, with a big push to learn a new set list prior to that. I'm busy with work, family and my main passion which is cycling...so the above is about as much as I could handle at the moment. The other guys are very good (far better than me) so we only need to rehearse a few times after our long breaks to be gig worthy.
13. I've got a 2EQ '93 H and a recent 3EQ 4HH. The 2EQ sounds nicer when practicing, but in a live situation the 3EQ's been great as others have alluded to. However, my '93 ray is one of the Alder bodied 'rays that they produced during that era + rosewood neck, so it has a thicker, darker tone which may account for more of the difference than the EQ. I wouldn't stress about it too much as you could always fit a John East preamp in the future - this would give you the 2EQ sound, but with a parametric Mid control which only alters the 2EQ sound when its moved off the centre detent. This is different to the stock 3EQ

Early 90s stingrays are the shizzle. Good luck with the sale.
15.
The bongo is a funny beast for me, I don't like the look, but I can't look away! That finish combo is quite amazing really, there is one for sale on Facebook that is a bright orange and it just looks stunning. How do they sound to a stingray? I am assuming that they sound quite similar but have a little mire tonal variety due to extra controls?
Ive got two stingrays (a 93 2eq 4H and a pretty recent 4HH) and a 5HH Bongo. The bongo is a completely different beast to either. I think a big part of this is the basswood body and the electronics. It's got a bigger, punchier sound. I was so tempted to order one of the 2014 PDNs as I LOVE my bongo but don't like the painted body and neck...the PDN edition would have solved this. But I just can't justify the extra outlay right now.
16. Oh Lordy! Does anyone remember those honeyburst mahogany bongos they did in 2012 with the roasted maple necks? If only I could turn back time and had 2 grand to spare....
17. That's a keen price, glwts.
18. How's this for twisted gas logic... Having been a whisker away from selling my bongo 5 stealth in November to fund a 5 string super jazz purchase, I've now come realise that it's absolutely the mutts nuts tone and playability wise. The only thing is, I just ain't digging the super stealth all black paint job, I like to see and feel the wood! So what I really need is one of those premier dealer network mahogany bongos with the translucent finish and roasted maple neck. Unfortunately they were a limited run and now rare as hens teeth on the used market...there may not even be any in the uk....
19. The world is your oyster provided you got the bucks to spend. Would be useful to know what your budget and criteria are and how loud your drummer and guitarist are ;0)
20. If you're looking to kill two birds with one stone, then get an effects board with headphone out and aux in such as the zoom. For something portable and good quality, korg pandora. But my absolute favourite for silent practice in terms of sound quality is a good quality amp such as genz streamliner/shuttle....appreciate that no ones going to spend 400 on a head just to use as a headphone amp, but if you have GAS for a new amp anyway then that could be another plus to tip you over the edge!
21. I have GAS. It's been five weeks since I last used. I want to kick it for the sake of my three week old daughter.
22. If it was built in recent years it will definitely be ash. There's a thread on the ebmm website where you can post the serial number and they will tell you body wood and manufacture year.
23. Thanks, some really good info there!
