I picked up a couple of basses in recent times - a Musicman Stingray 4HH and a Sadowsky RV-HPJ. Both lovely basses, but both with a couple of niggles compared to my two long termers (a '93 Ray and Bongo 5HH). The Sadowsky had a quiet E-String and the bridge pickup was considerably quieter than the neck. In contrast, the 4HH 'ray was lovely and balanced across all PUP's and strings, but the output level was considerably lower than all my other basses (though not fair to compare with the apocalyptic Bongo HH!!!) to the point where I thought that there was an issue with the battery contacts/electronics. I finally got round to fiddling with PUP heights last weekend and am kicking myself for not doing this sooner as it appears to have sorted out the problems on both basses! The question is, there was previously a good 8-9mm of distance from strings to PUPs, while now there's about 4-5mm. Does this still fall within what would be considered a sensible distance, or have I gone too far? Sorry for the numpty question, I haven't adjusted the PUP height on my '93 Ray since I was in my early 20's!

I'd say that's a decent price. Prices for metro's have gone up steadily, most metro's seem in to be in the region of £2300 retail, but with a street price of £1800-1900. Sadowsky make excellent instruments - they have the NYC models which are made in the New York and are very expensive and the more affordable (rapidly getting less so!) Metro models which are made in Japan, but also of a very high quality. Sadowsky's hold their value very well in the used market, so its a safe bet at that price as you could sell used for £1200 ish.

Thanks for the reality check!!! I played the 2010 version which is meant to be much better and wasn't that impressed for the money...so what was I thinking!!! I guess I was looking at the Fender because it resembles what I really want, which is a Mike Lull M5V with alder body, RW and vintage amber finish, but its going to be a long time before I ever have the spare to spend on one of those!

Thanks Oliver, that's a rather cracking price you got it for!

I've seen a 2nd hand 2009 Fender Jazz Deluxe V (ie the older 2004-2009 model) which I'm interested in buying. Unfortunately its rather too far away for me to try out beforehand. I'm rather wary of buying a fender before trying. I've heard that the quality is really consistent in 2010 models onwards, but has anyone had experience of the 2004-2009 model?

Don't care much for LEDs but damn that's a lovely wal!!!

I've got the 6.2 and its a very good amp indeed. By default its very clean and balanced. However, it does warm up very nicely if you push the gain up (and yes, it does have a tube in the pre section). Its not at as thick and tubey as the Streamliner, but it can get pretty close. I love both amps, but if I could only keep one, then it'd probably be the shuttle as its a great all rounder. It can get pretty loud (I use a Shuttle 2x10 cab) for smaller pub gigs etc, but if you have the need to go really loud, then I'd go for the 9.2. A lot of this depends on what cabs you'll be running it through. Put it through something efficient and you'd probably have no probs. I don't have any experience of the euphonics gear.

I'd do it jimbo. The Shuttle and Streamliner are different enough to justify it. I'm absolutely loving the streamliner at the moment, but can imagine that I'll got back to the STL 6.2 in a few months and that will sound great due to its own strengths. The shuttle 6.0 is even more different as it was voiced to have less low end and the gain doesn't break in to overdrive as readily as the 6.2.

The simple fact is that you'll always miss elements of the one, when you have the other. There's absolutely nothing wrong with having both...as someone else suggested, get yourself a Squire or Vintage Modified Jazz for now, you get 90% of the goodness for 1/3 for the price and there's always a ready market for these if you want to trade up to an American Standard in the future.

Genz Streamliner 900 would fit all of your criteria - its light, 900 watts, sounds huge and would be great for old school rock, funk and soul. And can be had for a bargainlicious £499 at the moment via GAK/Bassdirect. I picked up the 600 model a few days ago and am loving it so far, though I really need to put it through a loud band/gig situation to get the full picture.

Thanks again to Basschat for yet another awesome headsup (following last year's Zoom 9u effects pedal GAK mega blowout - though I still haven't figured out how to use the damn thing!). I got much love for the Genz as I have a STL6.2/210T combo and love it, but for full vol gigs, I was missing the oomph of a 15" and have just picked up a Focus 115T extension cab. This of course acted as an enabler to then purchase a Streamliner 600 head so I now have two rigs - the shuttle rig, which is a bit more modern sounding and defined, and the streamliner+115 which can do the hairy old school thing. I'm happy as a pig in poo even if my bank account isn't. Glad I picked up a Streamliner before they're no longer available, its the perfect foil to the shuttle head.

First sale fell through due to buyer hitting some problems with funds. I have withdrawn the sale as I was looking for a quick sale in order to purchase another bass, but no longer have the need. Thanks for the interest guys. ===================== Sale only please. Up for sale is my Musicman Bongo Stealth HH which I've had from new. This bass sounds and plays phenomenal - massively full and punchy tone and highly tweakable eq - but if you're reading this, you probably know what the bongo is about already. Overall its in very good condition, only two small dings in the same area at the bottom underside as pictured. Its not had too much play as my 4 string 'rays are my main basses, so frets are in almost new condition with very little wear. I'm selling because my current band needs a 5 string jazz and this will be surplus to requirements. Would prefer pickup in london, but also happy to post to post at buyers expense (we can work out a suitable courier). This bass comes with the musicman hardcase, which is also in excellent condition and I'll box this up on top. Scale: 34 inch scale Pickups: Double humbucker Controls: vol, pickup pan, eq: low, low-mid, high-mid, high Neck: maple with rosewood fretboard Body: basswood

I got a 5hh and its a monster too. I'm in this cant leave it can't live with it situation. On the one hand it sounds and plays so good, but my all black stealth version aint my bag looks wise, so dont love it like i love my Rays or my sadowsky metro. Would have loved to have one of those PDN versions with the mahogany bodies, but would never have the 2k for one new.

Nice!!!!! I've just pulled the trigger on a Focus 115T to go with my Shuttle 6.2 210. They seem a bargain for that money. I'll be very sad to see Genz go. If it wasn't for my imminent poverty (1st child on the way) I'd also have been in for a Steamliner 900 while they're still available.

How do I get tone knob on my Precision to actually do something?
mingsta replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
You need to go full circle again. Sell the P-bass in search of something with a broader tonal palette...you will end back here in a year or so's time....possibly a little poorer...but remember, its all about the journey. Which never ends. -
Good man. I've got a Shuttle 6.2 + 210 combo. Am looking to get a Focus 115 as an extension cab...the focus range really look like a bargain given that they're almost as light as Neo cabs but in the £250 range. Resisting the urge to start looking at significantly pricier options as I'll only need an extension cab for those rare occasions. I guess I better get in before stock runs dry. RIP Genz Benz, you'll be sorely missed.

My '93 2-eq SR4 has always had a quiet G string, but it doesn't seem so bad nowadays. Just recently fitted a fretless neck so will try again. My 4HH SR4 and 5HH bongo's are fine. My Sadowsky RV-HPJ4 had a quiet E but this went away after I fitted some D'Addario Chromes. My conclusion? There is none, except that one should make a sacrifice at the altar of the bass gods as it is on their whim whether or not one is cursed or blessed.
