Bit of a longshot; After a quick chat with Howard it seems we need a template, So do any of you lovely people on Basschat have an original Tele bass (68 / 69) scratch plate they could trace?
What colour is your bass? Ive got a nitro plate that has turned slightly creamy - might be suitable for you? EDIT - actually, I've just looked, the 69 has a different screwhole layout from my mid 50s style. Sorry bud.
Thanks anyway

Brilliant, thanks for the info. I'm off to PM the Doc!

I am the lucky owner of an old '69 Telecaster bass. When it came to me it hadn't got the original scratch plate. What I'd like is to source a replica, problem being I don't have the original. Can anyone recommend someone who could do it and would I need to find someone who has an original to trace?

Fate brought us both to Guildford where I picked up a Squier Bass VI from Steve. Had a nice chat and was an easy deal. Great instrument too, I shall enjoy this. Cheers

Thanks Kiwi, I think this could be the solution.
As has been suggested already, don't bother with putting it in the cabin. There are so many things that could work against you at the last minute. Invest in an SKB bass safe and you won't need a hard case. I use one and have taken instruments from UK to NZ and back again via Thailand, Malaysia and Sydney as well as Dubai and Spain. Make sure you get the mark II version though as the mark I latches sometimes need bending back into shape if they've been closed on an over full consignment. I tend to use budget gig bags which aren't as thick as the super delux versions and have managed to get two instruments inside. It has wheels so you don't have to carry the full weight.
This is a great idea, can I ask how the bass is secured inside the case? ie. Is there much room for movement or do you need to pack it out?

Thanks for all the responses. Lots of options there, some of which I have done or considered. My guitar player always puts his PRS in the OH locker in a soft case which is what made me want to do the same. I have an Ashbory bass which I did use for a gig abroad, but it's upright type sound was too wooly - It got plenty of laughs and was great to fly with though! Definitely like the headless / short scale options (Washburn Status, Hohner Jack etc.) - although status streamline / custom build is way out of my price range and the Epiphone AW sig looks too fragile. I mainly play Fenders so the Mustang would be ideal, but still not sure it would fit in the OH locker? Taking the bass apart is an interesting idea, but after some measuring I still can't fit the neck of even a SS bass in my suitcase. Looks like my best plan is to keep putting it in the hold and get a more robust case. Would be nice to avoid this though as I sometimes get the tube home from the airport and carting a large hard case and my suitcase can be hard work.

I currently do the odd gig overseas, as a result I'd like a bass I can take with me. Previously I have put a bass in hard case and checked it into the hold. So far I haven't had any disasters, but I feel its only a matter of time. What I'd like to do is put the bass in the overhead locker on the plane with me. This has led me to look at headless options (like the Hohner B2A), travel options (like Hofner shorty, Aria Sinsonido) or short scale basses (Squier VM Mustang, Jag SS). I'd prefer not to spend too much, but I do want a playable bass with reasonable build quality. I would be interested to hear your opinions and experience with any of these instruments or of any alternatives you could suggest.

I tend to play passive Fenders, most of the time a P. Through either an Ashdown or Markbass rig. With the gain rolled right down (almost off) I can get warm tube od and with it turned up a rich distortion. You have to be very carful with the volume though as it can produce a ridiculous amount of output. Add to that the boost function and you have a very versatile pedal. What I like most is how it sits in the mix of a band - it somehow keeps all the low end and the drive isn't lost. Hopefully I'm talking you out of selling this Interestingly I've never tried it through my valve amp? bet it sound good though! -

Hi Neepheid, thanks for the response. First first off, is this an active EMG? I'm sure it is, I didn't know they did passive pickups? Plus they guy I bought it from said I should use a stereo jack socket, so that would imply it was active. First off it's definitely 25K pots you should be using with active EMG pickups. Great, I'll stick with them then. Is your battery fresh? Yep brand new. Is it wired the right way (+ve to the red wire of the pickup, -ve to the ring connector of the stereo jack socket)? Red from pickup is connected to the +ve of the battery snap. At the moment (like the diagram) -ve on the battery snap is connected to the tip of the jack socket. This could be my first problem! Are we talking old school EMG where the main wire is a single thick white one with a braid inside for the earth and a smaller white wire inside the braid for the hot signal and red being power into the pickup? Yep, old school as you describe above.
