Found out yesterday that the legend 'Eric Snowball' has passed away. His shop had been around since the 60s and nearly everyone I know has bought gear from him. Notorious in the trade, great sense of humour. RIP Eric

Building a Fretless maple board Precision bass. Pickup question
I Put Wilkinsons in my sons P bass and think they sound quite vintage but I did prefer my MIM pickup thinking about it you may want a pup that is a touch hotter as being a fretless and if you use flats the output of the bass would be slightly lower
I've never had a mexican bass so I have no idea how they sound. There is always mex p/ups on ebay. My main 'Sting' fretless is a 70s Japan only reissue. It's very heavy but does sound good. I think it probably has US pickups on it but I've never had a look -
Toneriders are really good but maybe to "Modern" sounding for your Police Gig I would try the Entwhistle PBN that has a more vintage vibe ans is about 15 bangers
yes, I've seen the entwhistles too. I have some wilkinsons in my geoff whitehorn guitar which are also very good. -

cool, thanks for that. any good but reasonably priced pickup ideas? The Toneriders perhaps? Anyone with any experience. Their guitar pickups seem good -
Never actually put anything together from scratch so I am wondering about pickups. My idea behind this bass is to have a quality but inexpensive bass guitar, for touring, but it still must look right for my tribute. So, a standard P bass pickup doesn't come with the brass plate underneath. (some of the Fender pickups do but they're too expensive for this project) Do I need to have the brass plate? What does it do? your thoughts o wise bass chatters Mart

I have a replica with a fender logo. All part of the fact its a replica. If you don't like it you'll have to get over it I'm afraid.

Karl, if it's carpel tunnel, get it fixed. My old guitarist suffered for years and then had it operated on and fixed. Both hands too.
Do you remember a guy called Zac , think he had a PK50 Scooter? Think a big fella called Alan with a flat top , also worked there ?
I didn't know a Zac but I do remember Al. He worked for Trash. He was there a long time. People I worked with in the shop in Canterbury, Jim (from the rock n roll band, The Keytones), A guy called Max (drums and synths), Andy (prat), Big Mart (Boss). In the clothes bit, Laura, Sophie,Emma, Mog, and another stroppy girl with red hair.

There used to be a shop in Canterbury that did this. Music Mart and Trash. I worked there for a couple of years in the late 80s early 90s. The clothes were very rock n roll, rubber dresses, trousers, basques etc . The girls that worked there would occasionally dress up in the gear. What a laugh. One of them put a rubber skirt on and asked me to smack her ar*e. We were just the boring musos in the music shop part. They went hand in hand really. I bought some great cowboy boots from there. Black & white wrangler boots.

I don't seem to be able to requote things, so. Chrismuzz, yes changing between left and right would be a great trick. Very visual. The Greek, you assume I need to practice. I don't. The only time I practice is if I wish to learn a new technique or song. I'm not being big headed, just honest. I'm not looking to set the world on fire or get famous, I just do what I do. MarcS, I think a lot of people do notice that the visuals of a right handed Macca are different. The way Paul & George are when singing together looks very awkward if right handed. I think I need to get myself a left handed hofner
-
I saw a Beatles tribute a couple of weeks ago and the bass player was right handed. It got me thinking. I fancy learning to play left handed, just for a challenge. Anyone else done this I think I have heard that the Beatles, let it be, west end stage show only uses left handed Maccas now you thoughts, fellow BCs

Would You Want Your Own Signature Model?
police squad replied to Norris's topic in General Discussion
I have a Vintage 'Geoff Whitehorn' strat type guitar. Made in PRC. It has a 'Prize Fighter' bridge pickup. (it's a Bare Knuckles Crawler clone) and you can make it single coil by rolling the bottom tone control off. Wilkinson pickups all round (2 x single coils + the Prize Fighter) Geoff often plays in pubs locally and I know him well (he even used my range of amps at the London Guitar show, whilst guesting with Phil Hilbourne). He plays his signature guitar a lot. It's standard apart from he's changed the pots and wiring, to make it more robust. I bought mine because I was interested. It's a great guitar. I have better guitars, sure, but they didn't cost £200. I also have a 'Slash' AFD Gibson. I bought it because it supposed to be a limited edition. It became my main guitar for 4 years. It was just a great Les Paul, I'm not a Slash fanboi but I like his playing. Would I want my own signature bass, not really. I play a bog standard '75 P bass apart from a Schaller 3D bridge (when I'm not being Sting in the tributes). It may be bog standard (apart from the bridge, I only changed it because the bridge saddle screw were digging into my hand) but it sounds and plays fantastically well. -
just for the record, I use a PF500 into MB cabs. My first PF500 failed after about 6 or 7 gigs. My current one (touch wood) has been fine. A great sound and I've been gigging it for a couple of years now

Old strings on a P bass - an observation
police squad replied to SteveK's topic in General Discussion
my old '75 P bass sounds brilliant with whatever. I love it with new strings, grindy and growly, then as they wear it still sounds the same but with less twang. Eventually I break one and change the whole set. My hofner cont 500/1 sounds fab with flats. Utterly perfect in fact.I haven't done enough gigs with my bravewood Sting replica to know what it sounds like with old strings, although it did get showered with rum and coke at a gig and it killed the strings and it wounded awful but I suspect that was the rum n coke. -
Police tribute here and I'm going to see 'The Secret Police' very soon. For people who say, 'I don't really get tribute bands' I don't really get average originals bands, who can't write decent songs. Remember, entertainment

The modern crop of Vintage guitars with the Wilkinson hardware are all very good. Pickups are particularly good. I have a Geoff Whitehorn signature and it's great
