1. 'See you all next Saturday at the Railway Bell' I said to the boys as we were about to leave our gig last Saturday. 'Our next gig is in November' says the drummer. 'No it's Saturday' I say. He gets his phone out and shows me the website. I've forgotten to put it on the website. 'Oh F&&k it, I'll cancel it, sorry boys it looks like it's my fault' I said even though I know when I booked it I had notified everybody. Anyway, I checked it all out in the morning and sure enough, on our Facebook messenger chat page, I had announced it in April and was greeted by the 'thumbs up' by the drummer. This is not the first time he has messed up his diary. He's 30, has a degree in music and is head of maths, where he teaches. I was less than polite about it, because I have better things to do than constantly change things, arrange deps . Me II've just checked back thru this message board and I can see that I did mention about the gig this saturday 30th at The railway bell, dover. Ross, you even gave the thumbs up. So I missed putting it on the website, which is my fault. But I did tell people. I didn't text alex, because he sometimes checks in here and hardly ever acknowledges my texts about dates. I am utterly fed up with this. I'm going to cancel saturday because I cannot be bothered to sort it out. Just a big misunderstanding but If that's the way you feel - find another drummer, as I will not play with someone who speaks to me that way. Cheers As I said, he is always messing his diary up. He never gives me dates he can't do, until I book something. Was I too harsh? Probably but my job is very demanding and running a band (as many of you know) is a thankless task. Anyone else have this kind of thing? Currently looking for a new drummer
2. back in 1990, I was shopping with my brother (guitarist in my band) for a Pink Jackson. Guitar purchased, much chat and he has a go on a bass that I'd just bought elsewhere. He was left handed but just flipped it over and started slapping. Turned out to be Lee Pomeroy!! Lovely chap, working in Rockbotton at the time
3.
To throw at police squad of course ;-)
4.
Possibly could have been worse.....i was there for those few years and remember vividly the bottles of "gentleman lemonade" flying around all over the place. I guess a pineapple is more painful though
yes lots of bottles flying around. I remember Steel Pulse lasting about 30 seconds and getting bottle thrown at them and they wouldn't play
5. I was hit by a pineapple at the Reading festival 1983. Right in the face, during Big Country
6. I have a natural ash, fretless maple board PB70 (like Sting) and my wife has a R/W Oly white PB70. Both neck shapes are a bit different. The R/W being closest to my 73 but a tad shallower. Great basses both with USA p/ups
7. to be honest I've only done a couple of blues gigs with it. I didn't notice anything was unbalanced. I don't normally play short scale either but I did like the sound I was getting. There was a thickness to the tone but still some definition. I was planning on taking it out again at the end of the month
8.
I've just acquired an HCT Club bass which is strung with Hofner flats (I believe made by Pyramid). Fairly new set, about 3 months old so have been played in. Love the sound except for the E which is significantly duller and thuddier than the others. I know this is the 'Hofner sound' and exactly as it should be, but I'd like a set of flats with just a little more life in the lower range. I'm thinking of LaBella 760FHB2 (Hofner set) but have heard that they sound a bit too bright/harsh. Does anyone have any experience of these on a Hofner? I'm also thinking of the Thomastik JF324H (Hofner set). I really like Thomastiks but the description says "They do NOT fit the Asian made Icon & Contemporary series. This is due to the tuning machines used on those models; the holes are too small for the strings.". I've also heard that the Thomastik Hofner set is a bit too long from ball end to start of silk which results in about 1cm or so of the main string being wound round the tuning post on the E and G. Does anyone know if this is true and if they will fit an HCT? Thanks for any input on the above or other suggestions.
yes I have La bella on mine. They go thud, lovely. They are the only strings I've had so I don't have any experience with any others. The original rounds that it came with went in the bin.
9.
It's all about attitude. Every gig I play I make sure I have a blast. It's about having fun and not taking yourself or your band to seriously. We're not that important. Blue
I totally agree with you Blue
10. As the title says, I played at an outdoor charity thing yesterday, depping with a band that prides itself on cheesey party tunes. The Mavericks, Billy Ray Cyrus, Greased Lightning, summer of 69, Simply the most fun I've had in ages. It was my kind of band. They totally accept artistic integrity goes out of the window. They know the job is to entertain the masses and have fun doing it. Anyone else managed to have this much fun lately?
11. This is me at the front and I don't look like that anymore. This pic is 1991 I don't look like this anymore. It was 1990 and I was 22. I'm the singer in this picture
12.
Are they woodworms?
lol very droll Terrance, very droll.......................................Dave........................vodka & tonic please
13. I bought my wife an Ibanez JEM jr 18 months ago. It's an amazing guitar for the money, (forget the money, it's a really nice thing to play) sounds great too
14. can of worms, well and truly opened!! I don't sit on the fence with this topic. I have my views and my ears but IME I can tell the difference between ash & alder, active or not, maple or rosewood. Then plug in a steinberger (old one) and there's a totally different tone compared to anything made of wood
15. yes Congratulations from down here in sunny Deal
16. I can always change them back if I don't like them
17. EYs have turned up. They look great. I may try and fit them this weekend. I'll do a before and after video and see how they differ
18. you won't be disappointed with a Flea bass. I am amazed how good the pickups are, especially the bridge one. For the first time in nearly 30 years of gigging I find myself dialing in the bridge pickup. If I didn't keep buying basses (in the past couple of months, a Status and a thunderbird) I would still be using it on all my pub gigs. but it still comes to every gig and I'm using it this saturday
19. yep still using mine. Re strung it over the weekend with some swing bass. I'll be using it this weekend
20. very nice. I bought Nancy Johnson's ivory one a few weeks back. Love it
21. I've stuck an order in with EY. Cheap enough, we'll see. I may also try the Mojo ones. I'll do a few gigs with the EYs first. I have gigged my Tbird twice now. 2nd gig was better as I set it up better for my playing style. The Gibson pickups dont sound too bad but they lack a little sparkle. I had the preamp clipping nicely on the 2nd gig and it was quite entertaining (for me anyway)
22. I've just bought a white Thunderbird from Paul. Lovely bloke with a lot of lovely basses, which he got out to show me. (Love the Lull JAX) Makes great coffee and we chewed the fat for over an hour Top Bloke Martin
23. yes. I recently bought a 1985 series 2000 and love it.
