1. Peter sold me an aria SBR-150 with actives modified by him. He was a really nice guy. I traded my Manson explorer bass in against it. This was late 86 maybe even early 87
2. take the neck off and look for any markings on it and the body
3. very nice, just like mine GLWTS
4. Back in about 1993 ish I auditioned for ex Gillan and Ozzy guitarist, Bernie Torme. I knew the singer and the drummer was a friend and former band mate. Bernie Videoed the audition. It was ok, the songs were raw and not very well structured but I'd done my homework. A few weeks later Bernie called me saying that the job had gone to someone else because he wanted this guys brother to manage the band. I was disappointed, naturally. I had grown up listen to the Ian Gillan band and it was an amazing experience playing with Bernie and I loved all that trem stuff and harmonics. Then I went to see a show and was amazed how average the bass player was. So there you go, try not to take it personally. (I played at a wedding with Bernie, about 12 years ago. Bernie Torme in a wedding band, it was awesome)
5.
Let's not forget the red fretless 8-string Hamer Explorer thing...I hope he collected his bet money for that one...
Can I find one these b*ggers. Of course not
6.
He also played Ibanez Musician and I remember white Spector that he played during Synchronicity tour.
I also have these in my Police tribute
7.
The ones I remember are the Seinberger stick and the most famous for me are the precision fretless ones - one red and one natural if I remember rightly
I have all these in my Police tribute
8.
He usually plays Custom Shop replicas with hum-cancelling pickups.
No he doesn't. Danny (his bass tech) did present him with a custom shop replica but he prefers the old one you're right about the pickup though. Its a SD stacked thing wired in parallel, (same as in my Sting replica built by Bravewood)
9. Who's in his band for this album. This song has great feel (I don't really like the lead playing) I've googled it but I just can't find who is in the band, or at least on the single
10. I think this guitar is up for peanuts so I won't give you 'A Sermon' over it but 'Oh My God'
11. I also have a Bravewood '56 replica of Mr Sting's bass. (and a painted player Summers relic) Selling this will lead you to being 'Driven to tears'
12.
Yes, I grew up in Canterbury and attended that hotbed of teenage angst and prog rock the Simon Langton school, a couple of years after the Caravan/Hatfield/Soft Machine crowd. Besides Martins shop I remember Reggie Forwoods a few doors down, Kennards in Northgate and Socodi Music in the Friars. Happy days.
yep, Martin went to Simon Langton. I bought my first bass from Steve at Kennards!! 1981. Socodi now sadly gone, but members of caravan are still knocking about and still playing, I worked for Martin when the shop moved to the precinct next to the Marlowe restaurant
13.
Amazing. I remember Martin Judd from the shop in Palace St and bought several things from him, including a Futurama Coronado bass and the first Back Door album. RIP.
were you local then Pete?
14. Fantastic. no one will believe me but today would have been Big Mart's birthday and this bass turns up. Diamondgeeza you have a PM
15. wunjos is a great shop. always has some interesting 2nd hand stuff. staff are always very helpful although I did have to laugh at one member of staff, I'd tried an early 70s telecaster bass. Natural, ash and REALLY heavy. I put it back and the chap asked me what I thought. I said it was great (played really nicely) but too heavy for me, 'That's Ash Man' he said. I laughed. Perhaps he doesn't know you can get light ash too. Or a lovely maple bodied P bass that's as heavy as a boat anchor (The Steve Harris bass I have is better than a door stop!!)
16.
Funny enough - I watched that same episode the other night, and thought the same thing! I was watching it when it went out live, back in 1980-something or other, and just saw a boy band, dancing & prancing around. Good song though....
I was a year into my playing in '82 and when I watched TOTP I was only interested in the people with guitars. Even Bobby and Mike started playing guitar and bass in Bucks Fizz (Westones IIRC) I'm the same now but I do enjoy boy/girls groups when I see them do it live
17.
Though they were never a fave band of mine, I think they sound quite distinctive, and have always been listenable at least. Looking back, I think they're probably a lot better than I thought they were "back in the day". Plus, I think they've stood the test of time fairly well. I'm sure I'd have enjoyed being there too. Glad you had a good night
Yes Marc that's how I felt about them. On the 1982 TOTPS that is currently on BBC4 they are on it. But singing as a boy band. No instruments so I never gave them a thought. I quite liked some of the songs but since seeing them live on the one show a while back, decided to buy both the lexicon of love and the lexiicon of love 2. He has a very unique voice and he comes across as a nice guy too.
18.
What songs are they doing? Anything from "How To Be A Zillionaire"?
they did how to be a millionaire. they opened with, when Smokey sings (my favourite) and did a lot of the new album, which I have and is very good. the 2nd set was Lexicon of Love in its entirety and they encore with the look of love (yes, they played it twice)
19. yep it's only martin Fry, has been for ages. Most of the current band have been there since 2008/9. It's a very good band. Great drummer
20. and damn good they were. Andy Carr on the bass was spectacular. Great tone, makes me want a jazz bass (oh wait, I've got one). A really great night out
21. since I've had my Flea bass, it's been my goto bass for everything except the Police & Jam tributes that I do
22. so black/black/maple + a touch of tortoiseshell!!
23.
I dont know where the ones you mention but I remember one in a Hughes And Kettner ad back in 1990. Its a crappy pic but if you look in the centre, you can see the Star Wars graphic on that right hand Concert bass....JHS's address is on the bottom and lets say the ad was shot in the U.K. it could have been the one you are on about ?? Who knows ?? http://www.ebay.ie/i...KMZ5GN3bwvWiQ9g Some people will try and sell anything !!!! All the best !!
Yes Wayne, that's the bass. It was eventually sold through Brixton Exchange Mart but I still haven't found it.
24.
You cant really go wrong with the staggs and you still get a very fat sound from them this is mine https://soundcloud.c...iggins-iv/stagg ..got mine on here for 250 and very pleased
Yep +1 on the Stagg. I've used it in my Police tribute and it's great
