So, I've decided to have a go at de-fretting a bass. One £18.50 Westfield P-Bass off Ebay later, and I have a suitable victim (yes, I know, its not going to sound the best fretless ever, but its a learning tool). Key question though is filler or veneer. I've seen advocates of both on online tutorials, but has anyone done one with either or even both? Thanks. (and the good thing is that a cheap bass neck means easily removed frets with zero damage and flaking).
You just made doing a swept mid frequency a much taller order, since a dual section pot is often required just for the frequency sweep. Concentric pots like that do exist though.
So I would need a dual sweep for the frequency (guessing because it is the resistors either size of the boost/cut pot that determine the frequency, dual sweep for bass/'treble, dual sweep for mid and volume, so three dual stack potentiometers? Have I got that right?

I started out on a Squier Jazz, but then Andertons had a P Bass Lyte Deluxe at £400. Played it, fell in love. I know its not a proper P - its a Jazzified P, but it still bears the Precision mark, and a split neck pickup. I now have a (very) cheap Westfield P copy that I am planning on modifying very heavily. Side entry jack, 3 band active EQ, de-fret the neck, basically everything you've thought about experimenting with but you wouldn't want to do with your main bass. I don't particularly care about a bass that cost me less than £20, and have always fancied doing something fun and individual. As much as you can with a plain black P copy. Build thread going up sometime.

I want to build my own pre-amp for a bass-build. I'm good enough with a soldering iron to do it, and its a nice little project for me. I've got a design for a MM 2EQ, but I want 3EQ, and if possible sweepable midrange so I can pick the frequency to cut/boost. So, what designs out there? I want full boost/cut control, not just a boost function. And for the mid I am planning on using a concentric stack pot. Thanks all.

Looking at a new Tanglewater, probably an aspiration artist, as a scottish shop is knocking them out very cheap. However, I won't be able to try before I buy. Do I risk it? Current bass is a P Bass Lyte deluxe, and I like it.

I just hate front entry jacks.

That, sir, is genius. And I just happen to be pretty decent with a soldering iron, so more than happy to play about with making the MM2EQ preamp. I might be back for some assistance/thoughts. Any thoughts on putting a side entry jack in? How hard is it, and what to do with the spare hole? I guess you could mount the switch that you have on yours?

Had the opportunity to have a little play on an indonesian 'Ray at the weekend when buying my new (to me) amp. And I really quite liked it. But I can't find them. Have they become the Sterling by MusicMan Ray 34 range? What about the SUB range of SBMM? Are they any good? For reference, my usual bass is a PBass Lyte Deluxe, and I had a Warwick Streamer LX 5, which I would have kept if it didn't have the extra string. Next bass was going to be a second hand warwick 4 string. Until the weekend.

Picked me up a LM2 over the weekend for very reasonable money, so now sorted thanks.

I'm looking for something light weight (but compared to 25kg of Trace RAH600SMX!!). I don't need huge amounts of power - I have my Trace head for that if I ever need it again (can't bear to part with it though). I don't want to spend an absolute packet, but I don't see the point of spending buttons for crap. Quite happy with clean rather than a dirty rock sound. In short, I want something that isn't going to break the bank or my back, but is worth the money I spend. One thought is a Mark Bass Blackline 250, but am wondering whether that falls into the 'buttons for crap' bucket. Have to say, I like my Trace head, and if it wasn't 25Kg, I probably wouldn't be bothering to replace it.

Anyone tried a 5string and not like them? And why?
Commissioned and bought a Warwick Custom Dolphin SN 5 a few years ago. I used it gigging/recording for about a year and struggled with it. A fantastic bass which sounded and played superbly BUT in times of stress and terror I couldn't find "home" which, to me, is bottom E. Therefore, a really good bass had to go and I've reverted to using olden day 4 stringers with which I'm much more comfortable and confident. (Do miss that bottom B note when playing Red House, though - I'll get my Afghan coat and leave for Katmandu, shall I....?)
This. Except mine was a Streamer LX, not a Custom Dolphin. -
