1. I have a 97 USA Fender Jazz 5 if that's of interest?
2. Yep, got it, and enjoyed it.
3. Tsk - no mention of Sting & the Police yet! For shame, Basschatters! Whilst not Mr Technical, I consider him a study in space and tastefulness.
4. Thanks buddy. Wait til you see what he's building me right now!
5. My blue jazz with Nordstrands is on the gallery!
6. Nice! I'll angle to get one thrown in with the next build!
7. I can't believe how quickly this degenerated. For my $0.02, JG did seem to jump a little down my throat when I mentioned Paul McCartney, in relation to something another poster had said, and asked if I really believed Macca didn't know his theory....I was going on what the good man Howard Goodall said! Still, shame for it all to finish like this! For those who don't know JG, check out his music on itunes. I'm digging it.
8. To add to this, I downloaded Janek's first album on itunes and I'm really digging it. Lots of great melodic horn stuff, with simple, smooth, groovy, funky basslines. There was one solo bass part which didn't immediately grab me - but I will give it a few more listens. Regards Mike
9. Hey mate, welcome! I am married to a girl from Mesa, AZ - outskirts of Phoenix. We go back yearly and always enjoy it. Regards Mike
10.
Mike - "Someone like Paul McCartney? Great composer but didn't have a clue about theory!" for real? you truly believe that? didn't know how to write i - iv- v - i - ivmin - i? he certainly knows a lot about harmony, but then again the quesiton. Why? why does it matter what paul mccartney knows about theory? what about listening to his songs and being taken somewhere by them? and not getting hung up on the back end of everything. Which is just about what any forum for anything online does. Misses the point, and bickers about technicalities. Because technique is the easiest thing to identify for a bunch of bass geeks.
Hey ... this was an unrelated comment (nothing to do with you, Janek) to someone who mentioned that a lot of their musical heroes weren't hugely clued up on theory - I watched a documentary about McCartney's song-writing, and the presenter (Howard Goodall) broke down a few of his compositions, and showed how interestingly and well constructed they were - though at the time, Sir Paul was just writing what sounded good and "right" to him. He hadn't thought about the English folk tradition, or any other composition devices - it just happened. But just to clarify, this was not a dig at you! As I just posted in the other thread, I've liked what I've heard, and I've just paid to download an album of yours to enjoy tonight. Regards Mike
11. Look forward to it. Got your album from itunes today, literally just loading it onto the old ipod now, looking forward to giving it a damned good listen, and dare I say, a transcription or two!
12. Some guy posting live gig mp3s and sessions of jazz concerts - joshua redman, kenny garrett etc.
13. Very possible!
14. Link. Seems to be a lot going on - but a big zero when it comes to us bassists! Surely they could have got someone on the UK scene - Alec Dankworth, for example - to do a masterclass or something? Really grinds my gears! Regards Mike
15. I think it's your girlfriend who's open-minded, chum!
16.
I actually think that technical ability may hinder creativity. The majority of my favourite musicians are self taught or have little in the way of classical education. Maybe there's a certain magic created by trying to do a lot with the little that you've got? Maybe if you can't impress with technical ability, then you need to think of something else?
Someone like Paul McCartney? Great composer but didn't have a clue about theory!
17. I'd like to listen to some of Janek's work - I think I'll download some from itunes today. I recall somebody said in the "I hate jazz" thread that it bugs them when people say "cats" ie. "there are a lot of hip cats playing in NYC". This is from a Janek interview: And this is something you’ve checked out? And that you can tell? Oh yeah, very deeply. But not as deeply as some of the cats I’m playing with, which is my main reason for living in New York. I can get my ass kicked every day of the week by someone who is better than me and more advanced. It’s inspiring and makes me work that much harder. Some of the cats in the US start extremely young. I was 19 starting at Berklee with cats in my class at 17 that had already had some of the biggest offers for some of the biggest gigs in the world.
18. Wonderful - thanks so much. GREAT link!
19. Hi all! I'm soon to aquire a Fender 5 USA, and I'm keen to whack on a different pickguard. Currently it's a Black bass with the white PG. I'd prefer a black, tort or ideally grey/white pearloid PG. On all the websites (axesrus/highly strung et al) they only seem to offer one kind of jazz PG - but surely the 5 will need to be bigger to accomodate a bigger pickup? Any help (including websites) appreciated! Regards Mike
20. I'll be there also!
21. Ok....if you could give us some prices etc that would be good.
22. Was that second one bought from someone called Geoff?
23. Woohoo! Hey Chris. The bass selling market has been undergoing some severe fluctuations that strangely correlate with your absence!
24. I heard Yolanda had pulled out, is this not true? I tried booking a table to eat then tickets to the gig through the venue, but the chap on the phone said I needed to book neither. Does this sound correct?
