1. I already miss it... I think you could try to get from Lakland a fretted neck - it would be a crime to touch that amazing board! 😃 Glwts
2. I quite like it. Would like it even more if there was a Ford Mustang jazzmaster
3. To be specific, mine was a Danelectro and my main gripe was the scale length - too long for playing comfortably like a normal guitar, cramped to play like a bass. Your experience may be different, so I think one really needs to try hands on!
4. Hi Got this recently from here: http://basschat.co.u...fretless-bass/. But funnily got shortly after involved in an expensive trade, so last in first out, plus I don't use much fretless these days. So for sale only, this handmade, incredibly thin and light lined fretless bass. EMG pickup and pre (controls are vol, bass, treble), schaller straplocks, hipshot bridge, ebony board - please check the previous thread for more info. The battery cover is held in place with two magnets. Paul Everson is also a member of BC as you know, and he replied to my query about epoxying the fretboard (so that I could use rounds carelessly) really quickly! For the sake of clarity, the board is NOT epoxied at the moment. Nut width is 38.5 mm just like a Jazz bass. String spacing at the bridge is 19mm with saddles at the center position, but the hipshot bridge is adjustable, so at least it should allow for anything between 18 and 20 mm, possibly a wider range even... It is indeed a really nice fretless - very articulate and full sounding, very easy to play - reminds me a bit of Marleaux Consats, but light as a feather, and it is quite a looker as well. The body is amazingly thin! It has signs of use, but nothing major. I'm looking for 700£ (cash sale), will include shipping to the EU by UPS, and a standard gig bag. Alternatively, 750£ will get you a really nice Fusion padded gig bag in excellent condition. NOW ONLY 600£ Thanks!
5. Same here - was curious, felt ambivalent, didn't find a use for it, sold it. I prefer standard bass or guitar.
6. Great basses these. Also special in that you can get more subtle changes in tone due to pickup positioning (vs. the usual full on 'neck' and 'bridge' tones). I've found it works great strung B-G too. Glwts!
7. Actually that is true, Skank. All reviews are essentially the same...
8. I agree the review isn't particularly bombastic, however it says nothing specific as regards tone or playability to help others understand. So it leaves me frustrated in that it seems that there are no words to explain it, you have to play it to know, and I will never be able to. So it may purely read as a marketing ploy: 'best of the best'. It actually might be, and the bass in question looks beautiful (I rarely like Foderas) - but this kind of review/opinion just adds to the mystique, and I think suspicion and irony have then to be accepted as well. Almost by definition, by the law of diminishing returns, the bass should be 3/10 at most on value for money - even if it scores 10 on all other categories. Btw, I've surely spent more than 11k on basses and gear, and I do like Alembics (the expensive Series/Signature ones) - which is a similar case.
9. As has been argued, a 4 is a different instrument. The highest 4 strings on my 5ers don't sound exactly like a 4. The neck in a 4 is easier to navigate for me, the neck profile differs. Some builders seem to make better 5s, some better 4s. I love them both in their own right. All players that imo have revolutionised bass playing have done so on a 4 - but that might be my ignorance. By the same token, one could argue that a 6 is all a 5 is and then more. And then, why not go to 7, 8, 9?
10. Ah, we all know in a perfect world we would all be playing sunburst Squiers. You'd be able to choose one Behringer pedal too. Only one.
11.
I really can't see the point of on-line demos. They tell me nothing about how the bass will sound in my hands through my rig playing with my band.
Very true. That said, sometimes that's all you've got...
12.
What's a 'working class sense of humour' ?
I don't know - the kind people spending 11k on a bass don't have, perhaps 😊 But, seriously, I think this kind of debate is necessary - I can imagine people (not necessarily rich) easily thinking that these are the best basses in the world - and saving every penny in pursue of that holy grail. I too have considered it. There is nothing wrong with some of us saying it is just as likely to be your perfect bass as any other well-built, quality bass.
13.
If you don't get/understand the price tag, fine. I don't get it either, but I don't question it - it's not relevant to me and there's no need to get all judgemental and preachy about it. If they were doing it wrong, they'd go bust.
But that's the fun of it... Working class sense of humour is about the last option we have... I can be ironic about a 1000£ business class flight ticket or a 500£ surplus on Fender purely for a matching headstock and 'period correct' features all the same, can't I? Yet there will be people buying them, nothing wrong with that. We're talking here about an extreme, just discussing the subjective perception of value in a market where the vast majority of high end items go new for half the price. There is nothing apparent in these basses that justifies the price tag, that's all. If they have some obscure magic, then the one I tried was devoid of it.
14. Bargain - of course when you add the optional amboyna hard case and allen keys, it is 11,000 anyway 😔
15.
This stuff doesn't grow on trees you know
Saying that it's amboyna burl has saved many from divorce. Especially if you carefully run your hand over it at the same time and look down in ecstasy when the wife asks about her 11k£...
16. I played one Fodera and it was ok. A good bass, nothing special. What pisses me off a bit is how people justify their prices based on quality or skills or craftmanship or costs... It's like all other superb luthiers out there only do a half decent job? No, sorry, there are many excellent builders with extremely high quality products, all done by hand with a small team and most of them come at 2000-4000£, fancy woods and inlays, best pickups available and everything. So, good for Fodera if they can get away with it, it is a luxury product positioned as such, but I think for that price they should add diamond inlays or solid gold screws or something - would make more sense to me.
17. This is becoming a weird market experiment... 930£ shipped! Px possible with Ken Smith, Overwater, MTD, Luthman, Esh, Zon Sonus. Fretted 4 or 5, fretless only 4
18. Yeah... Ludicrous! If you want to try though, I offer full refund within a week (minus shipping).
19. Bump 940£ Need cash for other stuff
20. Just completed a trade with Ben, hassle-free, pertinent and good comms, bass was well packaged and mint as described. Wouldn't hesitate to deal with Ben again! Thanks!
21. 950£ for a lucky bassist who can deal with 5 strings on a fretless!
22. Incoming bass means I will let this go for the amazing price 1000£!
