Then again, I cant stand Motorhead ;-)
I would like Motorhead if they got a proper bass player and a singer who could sort of.... actually sing! I know that this is the opposite view to that taken by most Motorhead fans.....
2.
Amen to that! I'm uncool, but I don't care that I'm uncool. This makes me cool, but acknowledging this makes me uncool again. And the cycle repeats forever!
I disagree - if you don't care that you're uncool.... then that makes you cool, acknowledging it just adds a a sense of ironic cool...! Just the way that it works....
3.
Someone once told me that if you're mingling with the crowd, they should instantly know you're in the band.
I think that is the ideal for most bands, to stand out from your crowd without having to try too hard! Hopefully just being yourself should achieve that That's the trouble with having an agreed band look - there's nothing less cool than looking like you are trying too hard!!
4.
That drummer's kit is large in every way (I think he's quite tall).
Like his kit, the drummer is large in every way as well - 6'4" and until quite recently 17 stone plus!
5. Some friends of mine are looking for a new bass player to play in a Rush tribute band following their previous bassist emigrating to New Zealand! They are very good players (as you might imagine) and play the big Rush fan conventions, etc Oh, and the drummer has the biggest drum kit that you are ever likely to see!! If anyone is interested, please PM me with your number and I will pass it on… Cheers - Pete
6. Just bought Mark's Pandora from him - very smooth sale and a nice helpful bloke....
7. Hi Pete Please send me a PM if you see this, a friend of mine is trying to get in touch with you Cheers - Pete
8. Funnily enough I was in there last Tuesday whilst killing some time before catching a train home They seemed friendly/helpful enough, shame to see another shop go!
9.
yeah i'm a 'gearstalker' too.. and also I tend to judge a band on the quality/brand/level of gear they have before I've heard them play a note.... any one else guilty of this?! c'mon.. own up!! (my assumptions on said bands are normally correct though it must be said!!) peace c
I think that everyone does that.... including punters!
10. I’ve got a 4u rackbag going spare if anyone needs one It’s a pro quality rack, lightweight & well padded - originally made up for the BBC, black with red straps and a large pocket for leads, etc. It’s certainly seen a bit of work but still perfectly serviceable and a pro piece of kit No photos at the moment (just clearing out my house prior to renting it out and no camera here at the moment), but I will take some later if anyone is interested I only want £25 for it and for that price I don’t really want to parcel it up and post it, but still not bad if anyone is passing thru the Bradford area and needs a cheap rack! Cheers – Pete
11. Perhaps you should explain to your singer that it's meant to be "in your face" - that's the point...!
12. I used to have a 4 string version of this years ago and it was a really nice player - moved it on when I got my first Warwick! I assume that you need the funds for that new Fodera?
13. Just noticed this - forgotten that I had a feedback thread! Just to say that it was a pleasure to deal with Adam (attitudecastle).....
14. Hi Wayne You may remember that you got the SVT from me as I wanted a smaller lighter spare rig for much the same reasons as yourself! I still have the big Boogie/SWR rig for the band with the big van but for smaller gigs Ipicked up a s/h markbass 3x10 combo I always thought that the markbass was a compromise and I think that you said you were not convinced by MB, but it is worth considering because: a) it's reasonably light and I can get it into the back of my not particularly practical car; it's plenty loud enough for any gig; and c) everyone I've played with since I got it have been impressed with the sound of it and through I prefer the boogie or the SVT, I have to say that it does get the job done and does not sound at all bad! Cheers - Pete
15.
Well, there's not THAT many... and I guess people like them as a rough guide or a starting point from which to learn a particular song...
+1 - tabs may not be perfect but they can be a starting point and save members a bit of time when they need to learn songs in a hurry.....
16. Is this a repeat of the (very good) series from about 12 or so years ago?
17. I had one of these, not for me but a very nice bass. I sold it for £600, which I thought was a touch on the cheap side! That looks a very cool bass and really good value - I'm sure that it won't stick around for long at that price!
18. Have to say that in this rainy, over regulated, stress-ridden island - fun is most certainly NOT overated! However, I would say that when you are playing something like Metallica, or any other big rock type music, the fun is playing a bass part (that may be simple or occasionally quite complicated) that contributes to a massive sound where the whole is much greater than the sum of its individual parts and that demands an almost physical reaction from the people listening to it - that's where the real fun is! The equivalent in a funk band is to create a killer groove that people can't help but move to, or if you're a jazz musician to create a passage of music that is vaguely listenable.....

Fodera basses
Is it just me? Is it my age but I grew up in a world where you lived within your means and made do with what you could afford. I love the look of these basses and would love to own an Anthony Jackson model six-string but, despite earning a very good salary and living a fairly unostentatious lifestyle, I just can't justify the expense. Like others, I could sell my Gibson ES175, Ovation Adamus, Takamine CD132SC and Status Energy 5 - but, if I did, I still wouldn't have enough to get a Fodera unless I sold the Wal as well. To be blunt, its not worth it. I don't care how great they sound (and they do), as a mere mortal, I can't justify that level of sacrifice and expenditure for a bass. WIth absolute respect to some of you guys, I don't know where any of you get the money for these basses! I did a latin gig last night with the Wal/Eden Metro and it sounded marvellous. I can live with denying myself the Fodera. And, as I always say, its the music that matters not the gear.
I do agree with you - I'm fortunate to have two very nice basses that sound great and I couldn't justify spending over £4K on a Fodera However, that doesn't alter the fact that I blown away at how good a bass the Fodera was when I had previously dismissed them as being massively overpriced!
20. Does anyone here own or play a Fodera bass? I always thought that they just way overpriced but I played one at a jam night a couple of nights ago and I'm converted - totally rigid necks with a superb action and generally great to play with the most powerful (and best) active electronics I've ever heard on a bass! Still don't think that I would pay £4K for one, but I'm beginning to understand why someone might!
21.
None of us is "sensitive little flowers or easily offended" mate. Some of the chat that goes on in some of my bands would probably make you wince or puke. The point is if you want to talk about sex, you can do it without sounding like On The f***ing Buses. Circulating titillating pictures of women with decent cleavage on a bass forum without a sense of irony is about as 14 years old in the 1970s as I can think of. It's also interesting to note that those who say their MILF, FILF, BILF, etc. threads display a great sense of humour appear to lose that sense of humour at the first sign of criticism. To be perfectly honest, you and BlameLouis come across like you grew up in a Catholic Convent. Stop just talking about it and bloody do it, and do it well, or she'll leave you like the last one did.
To be honest that does sound a little like a personal attack, but like Louis, I forgive you. It’s just the way that we were brought up. I actually agree with you about some of the ‘humour’ about sex sounding like that a 14 year old boy, but my point was that the reaction to PeteAcademy was heavy handed and that the thread was no where near offensive enough to warrant that. Sorry about, the delay in replying – no computer for a few days!
22.
What?? So I'm likely to get kicked out of 2 bands I play in because I don't make comments to the female singers about the size of their t**ts, because that's what a proper musician does?? Next time I get a session playing for a female artsist I'll remember that because I'm a musician I must get a Bernard Manning joke book out and be sure to tell a few. Glad I'm not "most musicians" mate, otherwise I might as well go back to scaffolding.......where no one cared if you didn't read the sun actually. As for the site not having good debate, what this.....?? Personally, I like this site, it's a good community and pretty well managed. There are plenty of other sites that sell gear, and plenty of forums that offer technical advice pertaining to specific manufacturers.... Anyway rant and brain fart over...but I just hate being told that I have to conform.....
WTF - the point that I was trying to make is that most musicians tend not to be sensitive little flowers or easily offended - not that you have to turn into Bernard Manning to be in a band! Strangely enough this does not seem to be an issue with the female singer in one of my bands and any risque humour is just as likely to come from her as anyone other band member..... The fema
23.
Good point. I think the written word is much misconstrued. I was just trying to convey my (often wicked) sense of humour, but it was totally misunderstood.
I understand it alright - can't see why there was a problem in the first place! Anyway, everyone seems to have kissed & made up so no harm, eh.....
24.
OK, I was trying to make a point. Personally, I think the MILF deletion was a bit OTT. IMO. The BILF thread was a complete and utter pisstake. It's my sense of humour. OK?
Nothing wrong with your sense of humour mate (or Sarah’s or Rich’s), it’s just that there are too many here who are just too PC for words. How they ever manage to hack it in a band, I have no idea! I think that you have to accept Basschat for what it is – a great place to find & sell gear or to get info and technical advice (if you can distinguish between those who know what they’re talking about and those who really don’t), but not necessarily a great place for debate or what you’ve come to recognise as the knockabout humour that you tend to associate with most musicians……
