A stray thought caused me to go looking for a definitive biography of Jamerson ... hell ... any biography of him, and I was surprised to find that (apparently) none exists. Yes of course I have Standing In The Shadows Of Motown, both the book and the DVD, but that's not strictly a biography of the man although there's obviously a lot of biographical material in there. I though Rick Suchow had written one, but it seems not. Am I missing something?
I think Rick Suchow just has a good part of his website dedicated to Jamerson, but I don't think he wrote a book. Would love to see one though, or maybe two...one from a fan (like Suchow or Dr. Licks) and one that's impartial!

How to sell a pre-CBS Precision...

The recent rant about comments on sale threads here on BC made me think about this....but that site doesn't even have bumps!! -
How to sell a pre-CBS Precision...
pobrien_ie replied to pobrien_ie's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I saw it advertised months ago with something along the lines of "great heavy sound" as the only description. Spelling Precision, amongst other things, is quality though! -
....or maybe not! http://www.adverts.ie/745211

Thanks for a great thread! In relation to some of the other posts, I have to say I think what you do is cool. I saw your ad for the '58 replica, and I don't think you could have been any clearer that it wasn't a Fender production bass. Please keep this kind of stuff coming

Great thread, and it's fantastic hearing the experiences of others! I fancy picking up up a Fullerton or JV P Bass some day, year of birth and all, it's just a shame people here predict that the Fullertons will appreciate a lot
The problem is, if I went to the trouble of cutting and pasting loads of info, pics and vids of Scott Thunes, it would take me two hours and the thread would get 4 hits. Everything is out there already, if people are interested they'll find it (and that's half the fun). And who is going to trust that dAVE_tHE_bOLLOCKS from Lowestoft who lists his interests as 'saving the Marsh Harrier, blogging the history of melamine, and sitting firmly on heritage potatoes.' has got the definitive reference collection on Robert Palmer from No Quarter?
Point taken It's just personally I'd like a resource like this. For example, EssentialTension started a thread a few days ago that had some very interesting clips of Jamerson that I hadn't seen before. The trouble is that the thread will go down the pecking order, only for a similar one to be started at some point in the future, then only for someone to redirect the OP back to the original thread I like the idea of a bassists section, but obviously it would take a lot of effort from members for it to be useful.
I was only thinking this the other day, I know talkbass have a bassists section and if it's possible would be good to see on here!
This is what I meant
As you say there are a few to particular players already, you could do a search for whoever you're impressed with & if nothing appears start one yourself. Not sure if you mean many threads, each dedicated to one specific person or not? There is this http://basschat.co.u...ts-of-all-time/ which appears to be close to what I think you said & there were others long ago. So long as no-one turns it into an attack on others personal tastes or an exercise in who likes the most obscure player they're generally interesting enough.
Not so much as per your link. I was thinking more along the lines of people setting up a, for example, "Bruce Foxton Appreciation" thread where people can post videos, photos, links etc. into one place. So it wouldn't be like an X is better Y argument. Just a thought...

I'm just wondering if these have been done before. I'm always thinking wouldn't it be great to be able to come on to BC and find a thread with info, pics, videos, song credits etc of your favourite bass players. I see threads about Jaco and Jameron all the time, but they sometimes seem to become dormant in a short space of time, only for someone else tounwittingly start up a similar thread. The bass players I admire range from Jeff Ament to Jamerson to Jaco to Mani etc etc.... Personally I'd love to be able to find a good thread with loads of the above plus opinions, critiques etc. What do you think?

I sold Gary an MIJ Precision Bass body. He was a pleasure to deal with from start to finish and I'd highly recommend him to others! Thanks, Paddy
Nice thread - love the fact that clips of the great man are finally emerging
Nice thread indeed! Had only see the Marvin Gaye clip up until now. -
I've just looked up The Major's Bass Bootcamp. That's exactly what I was looking for, thanks!
Hi. What would you be looking at for the body only, Including post to hertfordshire? thanks Pm me if you prefer
Hi. Thanks for the interest. I'd be looking at £120 for the body on it's own before postage. If you're interested I'll get a shipping quote, but I'd imagine it won't be too expensive. Paddy

...and started to learn to read music I've been playing on and off for over 13 years and could read tab from the day I got my first bass, but never before did I have the desire to learn to read music. In fact I know a lot of people in bands around, and can think of only two of my peers that can read. Anyway, this year I decided I'd finally make an effort to learn to read. Last Monday was the first time I made an attempt to undertsand the notes of the bass clef, and I've since studied the symbols on my lunch break over the last week. I also got a really helpful android app called "Bass Cat" which helped me to remember the notes. On Saturday I was chuffed to learn my first song using notation, Try a Little Tenderness by Otis Redding (with Duck Dunn). While I in no way underestimate the challenge I will face to learn to competently sight-read, I'm really enjoying it so far! I now need to learn my key signatures inside out...suggestions are welcome Hopefully I'll have the confidence to buy "What Duck Done" and "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" soon...what better motivation
I like it
+1 ...I've seen worse I suppose... -
Twice in the last six months I found myself in similar sitautions. I depped for 2 very different bands and had to learn circa 30 songs for each band with 1 to 2 week's notice. My advice would be listen to the songs as much as can, either at home on mp3 player etc. Get familiar with the song structures and the basic chord progressions. Although I treid to learn all songs precisely, I got some advice here actually to stick to root notes if any doubt! 7 songs isn't an insurmountable challenge if you have some spare time. I'm a mediocre bass player at best, and while I doubted I'd be able to learn everything, I did manage to learn them all fairly well. My only warning is make sure you know what keys they play the songs in. Seems like an obvious thing to do, but it almost caught me out a couple of times! One of the bands played "Long Train Running" 3 notes down
...and I must say ,all of the people were great to deal with,)
+1. My experience of ebay (always as a buyer) has been really good. I don't get the whole "evilbay" thing. Excuse my ignorance, but is that due to sellers fees or something? -
It looks fantastic....congrats!!
