I saw one for sale recently and was intrigued so I looked them up. The comments above pretty much describe them. The interesting thing I read is that they're not considered collectors items, despite the limited run, and that they actually fetch less than a standard US Jazz.

Who was the bass player on Jackson 5's I'll Be There?
pobrien_ie replied to pobrien_ie's topic in General Discussion
Jermaine did indeed play bass, but not in the studio, at least not in the Motown days. -
By way of background..... at the start of the year, on New Year’s Eve actually, while playing some monotonous classic rock song at a pub gig, in my head I made a resolution to learn all the classic bass lines. I’d actually planned to learn 365 or one per day in 2012, but due to that being a mammoth task for me and the pressures of life etc., I’m only at around the 100 mark. Anyway, I’ve been a little OCD about this and have put all the details on to a spreadsheet to track my progress I’ve managed to find the details of the bass players on almost all of the songs I’ve learnt, but can’t find anything on who played this. Jamerson’s name is bandied around a bit, but it’s not on any of his fan websites or discographies, so I’ve pretty much ruled him out. Wilton Felder’s name is also mentioned, as he played on I Want You Back and ABC, but most evidence I find suggests it’s not him. I think it’s such a great understated bass line, so to save me from going mad, does anyone have any information on this?

Spec Query: Fender 50th Anniversary Precision MIJ
pobrien_ie replied to pobrien_ie's topic in General Discussion
Yep, I've got a 60th which WAS standard when I got it
I'd be just buying this for a project really so it wouldn't be standard when I'm finished either Just had a look on the Fender Japan site - is there such thing as a standard MIJ P Bass currently on sale now, or they all based on either the 57, 62 or 70 P Bass? -
Spec Query: Fender 50th Anniversary Precision MIJ
Am I right in thinking that the actual "50th anniversary edition" came with a flamed top in sunburst and gold hardware? I seem to remember looking it up a few years ago as one came on ebay. Anything else in standard colour with the stamp on the headstock just meant that it was made in the year of Fenders 50th anniversary and wasn't different in anyway. The same happened with the 60th anniversary. Mine is a 60th anniversary in Blizzard Pearl (the only colour they did the mexican anniversary model in) and it has a special neck plate. There were lots of other MIM and MIA Fender basses with a 60th anniversary stamp on the headstock, but these were in fact just standard models made in that year. http://www.stratcoll...hcollection.gif
You're dead right. The bass is advertised as 50th anniversary edition, but apart from that stamp on the back of the headstock it's a stock 1996 MIJ P bass. Thanks for clearing that up, I had just found similar information from a google search So back to the bass itself, are they most likely basswood with Japanese pickups and a standard 1.625 nut width? -
Spec Query: Fender 50th Anniversary Precision MIJ
Have you tried Googling? I've just done it and loads have come up including some that were sold on here!
I've tried googling and I'm not getting any results for the specific one I'm talking about, let alone spec details. I've also searched here and talkbass. I'm just getting info on the 2001 50th anniversary precision or the 1996 USA Fender 50th anniversary....its the mij version I'm looking for. Edit: Any links would be greatly appreciated. -
Hi all... wondering if anyone knows much about these basses, the 1996 models with the anniversary logo on the back of the headstock to be precise. It's the Fender 50th anniversary as opposed to the Precision 50th anniversary, so it's the standard "modern" P bass shape. Forgive me if this is a little vague, but I don't have any more details myself. I have an opportunity to buy one locally (but not locally enough to go and try it out on a whim), but can't find any info on them such as pickups, body wood, nut width etc. Anyone have experience in these?

You're All I Need To Get By - Aretha version. Who played bass?
pobrien_ie replied to 4 Strings's topic in General Discussion
My Google search found that Chuck Rainey is credited as bass player.
My guess, and this really was a guess, would have been that it was Jerry Jemmott. He started paying with her in 1968 and played on Live at Filmore in 1971 so the dates could match up. Having said that, Jemmott, Rainey and Tommy Cogbill (and probably many many more) all played with her around this era. However, as always I bow to the superor knowledge of the google search -
i wasnt suggesting it, i was saying it (unless you are trying to be all political about the differece between northern ireland and the republic).
Don't do politics me ....no good ever comes of it.

New songs for the set list - covers band
pobrien_ie replied to citymariner's topic in General Discussion
Maybe not all ballads, but some suggestions... Here I Go Again - Whitesnake That Was Yesterday - Foreigner While My Guitar Gently Weeps - George Harrison Still in Love with You - Thin Lizzy Parisienne Walkways - Gary Moore -
I had one for years and years and the best setting was with just the low compression on set at 11' oclock and the red tone knob between 1 and 2 o clock and then play with the input and output to match the uneffected volume because once off it is not a true bypass pedal as in those days they were still unheard of. It's an analog pedal don't forget so you need to play with it a bit to get it to your satisfaction, but it was good for the time, I then invested in a Markbass Compressore which commits the SMX to Room 101. RIP!
I'm certainly open to trying new settings, although those suggested by sixdegrees are working really well for me. I actually use this as an always-on effect, so matching the dry signal is not an issue. As a matter of interest, do you recall experiencing the same finger noise issue when using the effect?

"Amazing Slow Downer" is pretty good too, and I found the trial version gave me enough of the songs I needed when I was recently in a similar position to you.
anyway, could we organise a meet somewhere, then we could head to the pub afterwards? i dont see many people on here from ireland.
+1 to a meet in Ireland (if that's what you're suggesting) Also welcome aboard to WeeWheels!
Aha here we go! For all you Jamerson lovers enjoy http://video.pbs.org/video/2256479348 Edit after watching it I couldn't find the clip. Maybe it was in 'Standing in the Shadow of Motown'?
That's an interesting video. Thanks for posting. I hadn't seen any photos of Jamerson using the maple board 50's (57 or 58 I think) P Bass before. You can see a serious amount of wear on the board
How are you getting on with the compressor now Mr O'Brien? After commenting on this thread I decided to dig mine out and use it for a gig over the weekend! I fell in love with it again for certain numbers, but I didn't like the 'clank' it added when playing 8th notes with fingers on the driving rock stuff. However, it did make the upper register stuff easier to play as the volume across the fretboard felt/sounded much more even. Our guitarist even said I 'stole the show' on a couple of songs (yes, that's right - a compliment from a guitarist when the attention was taken away from him!). I also found at gave an instantly usable slap tone, with no EQ tweaking necessary. Now to experiment by adding my other pedals (including an ODB-3) to the chain and see how it reacts...
Hi. Liking the pedal a lot. I'm using your suggested settings and have got some comments on the clarity and punchiness of my sound...although they were from guitarists, the positive feedback shouldn't be discontinued!!! The only downside is the finger noise you mentioned. This is something I struggled with anyway even before you gave me the advice, so working on overcoming this. The strangest thing happened last weekend though....after bathing my baby I noticed there was no finger noise (with or without pedal) when I picked up the bass. Perhaps softer fingertips or something! Bizarre...or maybe John Deacon was on to something!!

Fender '62 Precision Bass Fiesta Red "Project"
pobrien_ie replied to pobrien_ie's topic in Build Diaries
This looks amazing!!! as far as I am concerned Fiesta Red is THE colour for P basses (closely followed by a nice aged white). I notice you havent got the tort guard loaded on the bass, let me know if youwould be interestd in selling it. I have a Squier Fiesta Red Precision and it superb but the tort guard isnt that great and I would like the guide holes to put the Chrome cover on as well.
Thanks! I'm with you on the Fiesta Red look I'm undecided on which pickguard I like more, so will hold on to both and change occasionally This is where I bought the tort one.... http://www.ebay.ie/itm/New-Genuine-FENDER-62-reissue-Tortoise-P-Bass-Pickguard-/290669563704?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item43ad418f38 I'm not sure if that's a good price or not, but a bought a few bits from this place so I got some good shipping discounts! I seem to remember finding it hard to get one with the extra holes as well. -
I'm not sure if these may be the just about big enough sheets you were trying to avoid, but you could try this ebay seller: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Custom-world-guitar-parts/Pickguard-plate-material-/_i.html?_fsub=2903224016&_sid=711305886&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322 I've used them before for a standard pickguard and found them good. Someone else also recommended them on a different build thread yesterday.
Thanks for the support guys! Already hit my 1st stumbling block......d'oh! I went ahead and ordered a parchment scratchplate for it (was only a tenner), however, being the fool that i am I didn't realise that the standard jazz scratchplates don't quite 'snug up' to the stack knob control plate!.....balls.....trying to decide whether this is something I can live with or not.....I have just found what calls itself a 62 reissue mint green scratchplate, but it's $47 from the states (plus import/VAT etc)....Also I'm not sure whether mint green works.....
In my experience mint green tends to be very light in colour and for me usually looks more like an off-white. It'd be actually the first colour I'd go for with sonic blue. The 62 reissue pickguard should also have the holes for the pickup cover and thumbrest as well, which finishes off the look nicely. Does the parchment guard have those?
-
Would also be interested to know where you sourced the parts. I used Stratosphere myself a bit, but found their shipping costs to be crazy... e.g. €50 to ship a body, €40 to ship a pickguard or any other small / lightweight item . I was also close to buying a neck off them for about €300, but when they didn't answer me the 3 times I queried a nut width I went elsewhere
Very early 1960 Jazzes came with an ash body, so it's "correct enough" . I think this is going to be totally rad! If you need info about the most silly vintage correctness, feel free to contact me
+1 on contacting MrFingers for "silly vintage correctness"

Very Nice! Love sonic blue! Will watch this with interest...best of luck with it.
That looks great Paddy a job very well done I often lust after a Fiesta red P myself @ MrFingers - Cheerz, John
Thanks John.... and again thanks for your help on this! Will definitley be getting you to do things for me again. Thinking of doing a '57AVRI and also might upgrade the pickups and pots on my fretless MIM jazz.
