Always thought that Barclay James Harvest's 'Live Tapes' double album had tracks that were better than their studio equivalents. I remember Les Holroyd strapping on an Alembic after playing openers on his double-neck Gibson at a concert in the 70s and for me, as a young-ish bass player, it was a 'Wow!' moment, having never experienced that clarity of bass before.

I'll kick-off by saying that I don't actually like live music - playing or attending concerts (I know, I know). This means I'll do anything to avoid finding gigs. It drives the others nuts, but I've been like that for over fifty years now. Rehearsals, recording are fine. No nerves at gigs, just don't enjoy them. 🤔

For the sake of argument, let's say you are looking to join/form a band. Before jumping in and heading off to audition/recruit, what is your biggest failing/weakness as a player or band member? Time for honest reflection here - what would you dislike about yourself?

I don't know much about music theory at all. To immediately give my answer to the question in the topic, I say, no, you do not need to know music theory to write, play and perform well on an instrument. I would add that I assume knowing theory would add to your knowledge of music and that can only be a good thing. My own area of theoretical knowledge relates to Literature, and I can approach a text from a variety of angles I'd never have imagined, had I not been trained at university so to do. I would most likely enjoy and benefit from a greater knowledge of music theory, but I have only so much time left to devote to any hobby/interest, so l'll continue to enjoy my amateur status and see myself as a bass player rather than a musician.
