.......am writing all this down. I know its very lazy, but learninfg all this via the tab method, which I have been doing up to now. Good or bad. Ta very much for all your input tho, keep 'em coming. i have loads of space on the Tascam! Matt

I was just reading the 'what was the last bassline you taught your self' It is a really good thread. However, it did make me think. So far I have only been learning songs that I like and that I know well. Because of this I am sort of stagnating a bit, so here is the question, If you had to reccomend one song for a begnner to learn, what would it be? I am very curious to hear what you all think. Cheers Matt

Blimey, i think im getting it. Thank you all very much for your help. It just goes to show, that the more expensive item is not the best. However, how do they all get to be so bloody smooth when you look at the Boss website? Cheers Matt
I heard that the patch switching is too slow on the boss, but it has a "stomp box mode" which means you have 4 or 5 pedals rather than switching between patches, so if you fancy that mode, get the boss.
the what ?.................. I didnt get any of that sorry Matt

I have, as you can see from my name , only just started playing, but am doing quite well with learning songs by tab, and generally practicing as much as i can. I have fun with it. However, being the creative type, I am interested in multi effects. cost is a big issue for me tho, so what are the main differences between these two units. It strikes me that the Zoom is a good quality unit and I would like to run both through a looper. It will give me another 'voice' to play with at this early stage. Is the Boss any better for the extra cash? Thanks in advance. Matt
Oh stop whingeing you Bristol people! You have about 10 guitar shops, independants, a famous vintage emporium, a specialist shop dealing in totally high end guitars who can get you exotica, a Warwick main dealer dealer (also Peavey and Fender last time I was in there), a Sound Control/reverb, and a bunch of others who will try hard for you and you are moaning???? Not Bristol Uni Students are you? Get real and do what everyone else has to do .... buy off the web or get in your car and drive to Bass Direct in the midlands, (about 2 hours, maximum, from stokes croft,) the Gallery in London (2 hours drive) or the bass merchant in deepest Essex (Ok a bit further but still only 3.5 hours away) Some people don't know they are born ,... kids these days .. etc
youre missing the point, what we want is honesty and a decent amount of info. Granted, the shops are there, what we want is decent bloody service, and whats more CHOICE! kids yerself, im too bloody old to put up with sh*t from meatheads after my hard earned cash! matt

Oh Blimey! I struggled, and i mean really struggled to get help with the purchase of a bass. I cant beleive that it was so hard to get basic help. In teh end i went with an Ibanez from the Drum centre on the gloucester rd simply because the gut pluggged it in and said, hey , you can do this with it. The chap from mickleburgh was ok, but not brilliant. Sound control just used to ignore me because i wasnt looking at a Fender, and because i was a beginner. Eugene was the best by far , be he had moved on when i finallywas ready to make a choice. His ex boss stated that he thought all guitar shops will be shut in the next year simply because Fender will put them all out of business! I looked at jam, but there was nothing for me in there, and the shop up the street had very little choice. I really wish there was a good music shop in Bristol. God knows what would happen if I wanted a decent bass. Matt

Still no BGM in the shops tho, despite the suggestion that it is on general release! booo! M

On a brighter note, i have never seen the US mag on sale anywhere! So i have only ever bought BGM, which i have to say as a complete beginner, is pretty informative. However, depite Guy Pratt doing his thing this last month, it does cater for those who have already started rather than those who havent started yet. For instance, beginner basses, i didnt really know if i wanted to spend £200-£300 on a new bass, and in the end i didnt, so a reveiw of the 'opening class would have been good. Having said that, it might have been well covered in back issues, but not in the last 10 or so mags. As i said,it seems pretty good to me. Was this months issue shorter? it didnt last very long! The punk issue was brilliant. Where in Bristol sells the US version, mind you, if the mag is anything like their climbing mags, it,ll be a bit full on , but with some great gear reveiws. Give me a longer read please BGM. Matt
No, I don't know if it's been won already. I would think the winner will announced in the next issue. Believe me, whoever wins that is going to be a very happy customer! Stu
Am laughing! Sorry mate, your grammer checker aint workin' either! No offense meant. Matt

Hey Stu! has someone won the Hellborg rig already then????? Blimey, that was quick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am having problems finding a teacher in Bristol! M

I like the Tascam MP-BT 1, however, i am on my second one as the power switch is very weak, and it has now broken again. Also, because i got mine at sound control, i have got to deal with Tascam direct which means post etc. But, when it works, it really is a good sound. matt
Thanks for the support boys You know, I think what upsets me even more is his lousy spelling....
Syntax was poor as well......... Matt. perhaps you should meet up with him and practice the 'slap' Cheeky sod that he is. There is a right way and a wrong way to have a conversation like that, and he was most ungentlemanly about it.

I havent heard a bad thing yet. I must admit that my personal taste would be for a very tight and 'punchy' sound with with plenty of tone at the low end, muddy is definitely out apart from maybe using a pedal for a particular efffect. I like the compactness. The one i heard was the 300w flight case i think its called, and it was really sharp. The fact that you can use the 4x5 add on can for the full 300, at such a small size is pretty fantastic, its a good concept. I suppose taht all i have to do now is actually learn to play a LOT better! Cheers for all your help Matt

hey Simon many thanks for the offer. Bradford Is a long way tho, but cheers all the same. Matt

I heard one at a shop in Bristol the other day, and was quite impressed that such a small unit could give out such a big sound. However, it was not playing that loudly, so i dont know what its like at full chat! Anyone got one or use one, I'd be interested to hear. Cheers Matt
Hey y'all - I've just started posting a new series of vids on my Youtube page. This one deals with bad habits - mostly technique-related that I've seen in many students and lots of players on the net. Feel free to have a watch... http://youtube.com/profile_play_list?user=davemarks Dave
Hey Dave. All good stuff again. I have been following all your tube vids and this last lot make really good sense. I have only been playing for a couple of months and havent had a chance to get lessons witha local tutor. THis is really really helpful. Cheers Matt

would any of you use a tutor who doesn't even own a bass?
Bass-ic replied to Inca's topic in General Discussion
Hi Inca In the mean time have a look at the tutor section in bass chat. Dave Marks does some good and easy basic stuff which i have found particulaly helpful. Matt
