1. I like this but probably fancy a Shergold Modulator more, never played one though. Promised my missus I wouldn't buy any new basses for 3 months though.
2. Nah, got an ex-wife a 3 kids to pay for.
3. Well I think it looks pretty cool. If you said to some people "Don't do that, it'll effect the resale price" they may say to you "So what? I bought this bass to play, not to sell".
4.
Give most people on the forum a bass with just an E-string and an A-string and they'd manage just fine.
Yeah. They're the best 2.
5. 4 for me. Always. Everytime I see a 5 string player, his/her hand is in the same position as it would be for me playing a 4 and the B is mostly redundent. I've got more interest in a 6+ than I have a 5. A 5 looks unbalanced and for the added agro it is to play its not worth it for a note most people can't hear in a live situation. I just love the symmetry and balance of a 4.
6. It's this one I love the look of: http://www.thebassgallery.com/fenderpbass50mex.html
7.
Just as you were about to put in an offer, eh?
Just about too? I already have! I offered £1000, which, considering the number of "difficult members" is a fair price I think.
8. You mean it's not for sale???
9. I'm a jazz man, but was noodling on a P the other day and was growing to like it. Quite fancy one in that orangey/pinkey colour with the gold adonised scratch plate.
10. Went to the Galley at lunchtime. Played my first headless Status - just unplugged though. Firstly, although 80's looking, I liked how compact it was. Also very well finished. Didn't balance on my knee at all, but maybe thats because I'm used to much heavier basses. I must say though, that in terms of action, it had to be the easiest bass to play I've ever picked up. The action was so low, the string tension seemed low as well, and every lick was so easy to play! Without doubt the most playable bass I've picked up! There's certainly something to be said about a graphite neck. I still won't own one though - due to finding it slightly uncomfortable to play whilst sitting and the slightly dodgy looks. I'd also be concerned that it sounds a bit "hi-fi" to me. I'd have to stick some flats on it. I can see what you fellas like them though.
11. ....and then retrieve it GG Allin style.
12.
I don't regret doing it that way as we all started at the same level and we have grown together as a band... It also removes the "Well, my old band did it like this..." and "I know what I'm talking about, young man." which we got when we were looking...
This is why I'm keen to set it up myself. I know it's not the most effective way to get into playing covers, but I think it will be the most fun.
13. To be honest OG, I'd be happy to play any of those. I sometimes find songs I don't personally like are more fun if I'm playing them. I'd probably have a slightly less modern set, you know, thrown in a few more golden oldies, but it s a good starting point. Trouble with playing originals is the sets are so short, you usually get 8 songs max and its hardly much of a challenge to remember 8 songs!
14. Cheers for all the exellent advice fellas, it really is appreciated. I'm only looking to do pub gigs (initially at least), and I must admit, earning a bit of cash hasn't rally crossed my mind. If it covers costs then great. I'm reasonably confident that I can pick a decent set list, I've seen a lot of covers bands in my time and think I have an idea of what works song-wise. I also appreciate that my tastes aren't always the audiences taste. Thankfully, I've done a lot of research in the form of being a p1ssed up punter over the years! (having said this, I'm sure everyone thinks they could, so half the songs will fall flat on their face!) I also appreciated that until we build a following, it will be some time until we good the decent pub slots. I'm cool with his. Likewise, I take OG's advice onboard about joining an established act - this is clearly the sensible thing to do. However, I'm not sensible and always enjoy a bit of chaos! Thankfully, I'm mates with a few landlords that will happily give me a thursday night to practice my "craft", so we won't be diving in at the deepend. In terms of equipment, what sort of bread would an average second-hand set up cost? Any ideas on this? This made me smile:
If your combative nature extends to your gigging life I'd forget it as you will be treated like poo, shouted at, rejected and challenged on a regular basis.
Combative! You must be thinking of someone else! I thought I was alright! My line of witty banter was developed and honed in the pubs of west kent and east sussex, the very same venues I hope to play. I'm actually a real charmer in person! Anyway, once again, cheers for all the advice.
15. I'm currently toying with the idea of setting up a covers band. I currently play in a 5 piece originals band, which I love. However, the constant "pay to play" shenanigans of London venues and the lack of non-friend crown does grate occasionaly. I've always had a lot of respect for you weekend-warrior covers guys, and I think it looks like a lot of fun. I also think it will stretch me musically. What I don't want to do however, is join an existing band. I kinda like the challenge and idea of setting something up from scratch. I have a few buddies who are interested in forming this, but like me have never palyed in a covers band. I'm thinking of making it a criteria to join - you must have no experience of playing in a covers band! The issue is, with my current band, we only play venues with a PA and backline. All I do is show up with a bass at a certain time and play. I don't have the first clue as to what's required equipment wise, how much do you charge, getting gigs, likely problems, how long a set is needed, how much it would cost to set up from scratch etc. Given that I know a lot of you guys have been gigging in covers acts since the dinosaurs roamed the earth, I was wondering if anyone could offfer any advice/info on the above? If you were to set up a band from scratch now, how would you go about it? Apologies if this has been covered before, or if its in the wiki (I haven't checked as BassFerret told me not to).
16. Although I hate Jazz, I was watching this last night. I found the music truly terrible, but I couldn't help but marvel at the musicianship of those fellas. I even tuned back in at the end to see who the bass player was. Although its not my cup of tea, I thought he was infinitely better and more "musical" than every other Jazz bass palyer I've heard. Respect due.
17. On the "Don't worry" version I love the skinny Israeli bird with the massive jugs!
18.
I was talking about Jeff......
I'd do him too.
19.
The Germans brought the scheme in a while ago , which is why VW had their best Feb sales figures ever and our guys are either redundant or on short time.... British Politicians.......useless.
Gotta watch those charismatic German leaders though.
20. I've spent more on a single night out than I have on my current main bass (a USA Fender Jazz) and current car combined. How's that for mixed up priorities/stupidity?
21.

Denim, bass, and motorcycle. That's what its all about people! Great thread!
22. Yep, I'll give you that one.
23. I remember the slightly Wal looking one you did. Think it was 5 string with a reasonably exotic top? I hate 5's and exotic woods, but somehow it looked great.
