Whoa thanks for all the really fast replys guys . Where are you? Maybe worth checking out the For Sale section? I've got a Peavey Firebass head and 2x10 cab I can do you a deal on (because I like you, you understand?). I live in the Shrewsbury where do you live? and how much would this "deal" cost me And i am willing to buy used items as it would seem i would get far more for my moneys worth
Unfortunately, Its a bit far for me and I'm unable to post or courier these. Keep your eyes peeled though, shouldn't take long for something appropriate to crop up in your area (or with someone who can post/courier).

There's a Jam night every other Tuesday at The Punch & Judy in Tonbridge (there's one tomorrow). Don't know what it's like as I've never been. Might be worth phoning first? It's a half decent little boozer though.

Billy Sheehan - Technique with no soul?
BigBeefChief replied to saibuster's topic in General Discussion
Seems like a nice fella to me. I remeber the Scientology interview he gave outside a Scientology centre. I think Scientology is a cult that rips people off, and the journalist was being pretty harsh on him, but he just cam across as a really nice fella. As for his playing, its not my cup of Tea. Technically, he seems great, and he clearly loves to play. He got much more passion than most "technical players". Seems passionate about bass which can only be good. I get the impression that if you told him you hated his music, he'd take it on the chin without being a dick. Billy Sheehan - he's alright by me. -
One thing I have noticed with Jamerson, he is always looking at his fingers at what he is playing. All the pictures show this and the live clip of him playing with Marvin.
And that's where our similarities end!

I can't keep track of everyone's bands
Its in the corner...still gets played, gonna write a few tunes for it in the next few months with ICON...Scott insists...Ive a feeling Im gonna write a ballad on it. ICON wrote their lp and recorded it before I joined, the bassist quit after finishing his lines, and Ive come onboard..so its the next summer or 2 in drop C...and writing for the next lp (Ive retuned, and turned the geetar to drop A..and shown him the wonders of upgraded pickups) using the 6 and 9. But for whats written and what we are performing live, its silly to use more than a 4. Songwise Ive rewritten a good amount of the parts, they kinda were lazy and more guitar rather than drums, and theres a lot of melody that could be used, that isnt..and the drummers admitted that he has always followed the guitarist in any bands he's been in,in his own words Im the first fingerstyle Bassist he could actually hear...seeing as there are not many 'Bassplayers' out there, and Bass as Bass and drums in a ryth section in Metal as a genre is pretty much dead...(there are an awful lot of BAD metal Bassholders) its a learning curve for all of us. But I do get a solo....
Ahh, I see. Has the 9 still got a headstock? I remember reading a post where you said you've gone headless?
-
What happened to the 9?
If it's BGM, then I think you mean scale lentgh.
If it was BGM they would say "43in scale lentgh, allowing for a passable Marcus Miller impression".
my audition for Take That resulted in a provisional offer of the gig but, as I refused to shave my beard off, they moved on - curses, foiled again!.
It's a shame Bilbo, because we all know you've got the moves.

Seems to me that Jeff Berlin only teaches/advocates one aspect of being a pro - technical/musical ability. I would add not acting like a dick and pissing people off, and not dressing like the IT Department.

The Gallery is your best bet. http://www.thebassgallery.com/ Depends if you're looking to buy or not though. If you just fancy a nose around, might be worth checking out Denmark street. Lots of guitars, quite a few basses, all overpriced, but ok to kill some time.

Burns Bison. I love that bass. Will buy one this year.
SO in that statement you admit that all the wood, and type of construction, means sh*t all when its plugged in...because you are hearing P/Us and strings...not the wood....hense,I win..YAYYYYYYYY..... Fact is this,I play a Jazz, its me playing a Jazz,I play a P.....guess what..its me again......I play a Warwick.....well this could go on.... The Carl Thompson interview I use is over scale...A man who knows a ton more about building instruments than you Alex, part of the Thompson sound to me is EMG P/Us,and scale.and the fact that wood is to abstract...like ways to describe sound, such as CT says in the interview......unlike pretty much metal as a substance,to clearly define its properties in tone creation or affection. Scale makes things brighter and clearer over greater length in the lows...thats science,a world ruled by facts not hearsay and alchemy....see a piano for details kids....but you dont get Bechstein or Bosendorfer arguing over the wood used in construction, because the the strings are anchored at each ends by parts made of metal....say thats like a bass isnt it....but they look nice dont they. Maybe stringthru body brings the wood into play a bit more,But I dont hear it,the killer for most vibration is the metal saddle, with an nth going into the body...we dont fit magnetic P/Us in the ass of our instruments..so maybe the Piezo users have more 'wood' than regular joes....in tone terms. Ive played pisslight EBMM's and Buttheavy EBMMs...they still sounded like Stingers to me,so the wood had nowt to do with it,and to say you can tell the difference is myth and lie. We dont buy an electric instrument to play it acoustically, thats madness.... Ive played Bright mahogany instruments,Ive played Dark and murky Maple instruments....the wood means very little...as I say,the player, the strings guage, scale, the P/U..the P/Us position,The Bridge, where the strings plucked....the electronics..Body shape....woods way down....dosent mean it does not affect tone at all,its just a very very very very small part and then before that theres the amp,cable,speakers..... ----- Prove ,without any doubt that X type of wood,ALWAYS sounds like X and I will believe you....but its untrue, you know it,buy the wood coz you like the look of it,but dont get all bogged down in the myth that wood IS the be all and end all of tone.
So you're saying it's not the wood?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-theory, but I also think that to many, bass is just a hobby. JB ssems to think that everyone wants to be him. I don't. If I was bitching that I couldn't get any session work, but couldn't be bothered to learn to read, then he'd have a point.
Wait, you actually do play bass?
Hardly. I stand there and hold it mostly. (ooerr)
If a bass sounds like a bass sounds like a bass to the audience and thus tone is irrelevant then you might as well close down 3/4 of this forum!
It's not irrelevant, but it matters more to the player than the audience. There's nothing wrong with that. I like my bass to sound a certain way, and I tell myself that it compliments the song. The truth is, when we play live, very few people would notice if I swapped my £700 bass for a £100 bass. If having a 2mm wenge strip running through the neck of a bass means that your more likely to pick up your bass and play it in the evening, then its well worth it. I just think people are misguided if they think he has a big effect on the punters in a band environment.
Ditto, errr... Oops me too!
I'm not bored of the argument though! Personally, I find most talk about tone to be a load of rubbish. In a live band scenario, a bass just sounds like a bass to me, especially when going through the PA. Most important thing for me is how comfortable or "at home" I fell playing a bass. Some basses I pick up and they just don't feel right, even without playing a note. Other basses just seem to "fit". I don't mean purely on body shape, it can be neck length/width/depth, type of finish, pick up placement etc. I find you get get a useable tone out of most things. Likewise, if your more comfortable playing a bass made of exotic woods and you think you can hear a difference, then great, its worth it for you.
