I've never changed or cleaned a bass string!
Dynamics are important though, especially for a bass player of all people because it's such a dynamic instrument.
It's important to bass players and a handful of other musicians. Not to normal people though.
Fair enough on the tone side of things, it's hit or miss. But you hate DYNAMICS in music? That's nuts... music is by it's very nature dynamic, to not include it in your playing I think would actually require a conscious effort to do so.
As I say, you can get louder at the end, or pick it up a bit for the chorus, but anything more make you sound like a Jazz tosser (that one's for you Rich!). I always try and play at the same volume. Maybe classical music can get away with it, but as you may have guessed, I'm not a classical musician.

I don't deny his skill. He no doubt changed the role of bass for many, showing that it can be a solo instrument. My sticking point is that I hate bass as a solo instrument, so for the way I play, he may just as well been a painter and decorator. To me, it just sounds rubbish. Horrible tone. Like a toy trumpet. Also, I hate dynamics in music. Just keep it all at one volume, otherwise you sound like your either tuning up or f***ing up. Half of Jaco's stuff I can't even hear (thankfully). The only acceptable dynamic is finishing a bit louder than you start. The Ox and McCartney (even though I hate the f***er), have had a bigger influence on me (and I would argue music as a whole) than JP. Without JP we would have no Michael Manring, which would have only been a good thing.

I think its sh*t. Don't mind "Come on, come over", but the rest is rubbish. I don't like solo bass though and I think Joni Mitchell is a f***ing whore.
+1 I think that painted basses have a huge reflection on your personality.
Not as much as mirrored finishes.
Well... I deffinitly think they are overrated... Not only do they charge to much for what they are... They are verry limited to what they can imo... I mean, they are great jazz/blues basses... No doubt! But that's all.... Imo you can't play metal with Fender's, and some hard rock isn't great either -.- That's personal opinion but still... While Washburn and Warwick... They make basses that are great for metal, rock and still able to play jazz/blues !
Yeah, you're right. You can't play rock on a Fender. Laugh my c***ing arse off!

I suppose some Little Feat would be classed as country, and that's amazing. I challenge anyone who hates country not to like "Willin'". It's one of my favourite tracks ever, and if you diss it, I will smash your goddam face in.

Well I like country. It's one of the few genre's where I can listen yo most of it. OK, not like all of it, but at least sit through it. It's so much better than that shouty music about shitting on nuns, or that music-for-pretentious-w***ers Jazz.
Routing has begun. Sorry still no eggs so here's a jar of Asda pickled Onions instead.
Have you tried Barry Norman's pickled onions? Very tasty and available in Sainsbury's.

The 3 nicest basses I have ever played are Fenders. I don't want to look like a space man when I'm playing so I hate all this carbon fibre sh*t. I also refuse to put batteries in a bass guitar. Batteries are for TV remotes and my girlfriends rampant rabbit. I also don't want to sound like a guitar. Just a dull thump suits me. Quirky basses f*** me off. The people who play quirky basses often have quirky hair. And probably wear trainers with a suit, just to look quirky. Just because you've got no personality and your parents ignored you, don't try and make up for it with a silly quirky guitar. Spikey metal basses. What a load of sh*t. Everyone knows the mettallers at school were the geeks who played dungeons and dragons. Having said that, a lot of those goth birds take it up the arse, so maybe their on to something? Still, get a hair cut, take of your cape and get a f***ing job that doesn't involve breeding snakes or working in the IT department. I genuinely couldn't give a f*** what its says on the headstock of a bass, I just think Fender got it right. Other manufacturers (like those c**ts at Warwick) seem to think "how can we make a design different from a fender?" as opposed to "How can we design a great bass?". I played a Burns the other day. That was alright. Different but still comfy and doesn't make you look like a c***. Although I do look (and act) like a c*** naturally. Fender copies. Fair enough. Don't see the point though really. I know Vintange do some decent cheaper copies. Wouldn't get one of these expensive ones though. Most of them take batteries. f***ing hate batteries. I've stopped using pedals because of them.
Bilbo (or anyone really, but particularly Bilbo, because I think we're more akin than I first thought) ... what do you think of this ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSzWPNFX7sc Hesitated a bit about posting it, but I genuinely want to know (suddenly remembered that our drummer emailed me the link some time ago). Andy
Playing Jazz trumpet looks like a piece of piss. As far as I can tell, you just blow into it and move your fingers randomly as quickly as possible. Then, when someone says its noodling, you tell them that they don't "get it" and should f*** off back to listening to Bucks Fizz.

A lot of you guys are into your custom basses and there seem to be some real quality stuff being produced by UK luthiers. I'm not really the custom bass type, but I've always been interested as to why someone would select a certain luthier over another. I'm also interested to find out why you went down the luthier route as opposed to buying something off the shelf? So, custom bass players out there - why did you go with Shuker/ACG/RIM etc? What made you decide to go for something hand-built over something tried and tested many thousand times over (eg Fender). Please note, this is not meant to be a "XYZ is the best out there, all the rest are sh*t" type thread. Just interested in getting your views. I hate confrontation and won't stand for any on my thread. Oh no. I apologies if this thread already exists elsewhere. I couldn't find it and I'm not very good at using the search function.
You guys didn't get paid? That's a disgrace! Even by the terms of their exploitative contract you should have received about £50. I know you're not expecting a Learjet and all the coked-up hookers you can handle but it'd be nice to at least get your petrol money back to Kent, right? Seriously, if you guys are based in Kent and getting 80 people in London you should be playing better venues for better organisers.
We're based South East Sondon/Kent but only gig in London. We don't usually bring that many, but I remember it being a particularly popular gig. We may have been paid, but I'm pretty sure we didn't. Lets be honest though, £50 5 ways ain't covering much!

Dunno about you lot, but ogri looks a hard bastard to me. When it all kicks off over Jazz or Jesus next time, I want him on my side. He'll knock 'em out, I'll lay the cowardly boot in.
The second time the place was rammed with our crowd (50+). We walked out with a paltry £20 for the entire band.
You got paid? I think we took about 80 people with us and pretty sure we didn't see a penny. Of course I'm an artist, so I don't do it for the money blah, blah, blah.
