Jaco, this is why he's the uber-dude
If you wanna hear him play something non-jazzy which is just gorgeous then check out his playing on the tune Hejira by Joni Mitchell. Just type that into youtube and click on the one which shows the album cover. Just gorgeous fretless melodies and chords but definately not Jazz.
Couldn't listen to it until the end. The tune was too painful. I just don't like the tone of his bass. I like a dull thud. Also, I know all you oldies like fretless bass, but you've got to understand that us youngsters associate the sound of a fretless with people who go to Paul Young gigs and call their bird "my partner". It just sounds so dated (dated bad, not dated good). -
+1...anybody that nice has got to be sus...gimme Jaco and his arrogance any day of the week.
Jaco was no doubt much better to go out on the piss with, but in a bass solo context, I prefer the Predator. At least I can hear the tune he's playing. The Predator does a really lame cheesey cover of Amazing Grace (I think) - its lame and cheesey, but you can tell waht it is. -
There will be no Christmas for all doubters , I've told Santa where you all live. Shame , shame ,shame.
Looks like my Christmas was already cancelled given the fact I was off to Vegas but the snow there has meant the airport has been shut for 2 days. I blame Jaco. -
You might wanna check out a tune like continuum next to hear some lovely melodic playing from his first solo album with a lovely solo.
I will look when I get home. Can't listen at work. If it's anything that could be described as "Jazz" or its kiddy-fiddling cousin "Fusion", then I'm setting fire to my face. -

I really like the bass playing on "Come on, come over". That's a quality tune. I just don't understand how that can come from the same person who makes that noise on stage. -
you're a little gobsh*te and I will always say so
Agreed. But back to Jaco. I can see that he was innovative, but its easy to be innovative. If I started playing my bass with a golf club and sewing machine, I'd be innovative too. Doesn't make it any good. Also, what's wrong with the tone of his bass? Sounds more like a broken trumpet. As for hitting his strings to make a thud - what's wrong with a drummer? I've never been a fan of solo bass though. I can appreciate that fella who looks like the Predator a bit. His tunes actually have a melody and I can see how people can tap their foot to it. I put Jaco in the same camp as that tosser Jeff Buckley. An early death creates the legend. -
He wasn't a junkie either, in fact his problems began when he STOPPED taking his medication. He was a diagnosed manic depressive.
You knew him CK? I'm impressed. -
People that don't like it have that within their right, but to my mind it is so utterly pointless to think about it to the point of being insulting about others' taste.
But I lack the maturity to just say "not my cup of tea". When I heard that clip I honestly thought it was one of those comedy vids where its overdubbed by someone making random noise. It's so self-indulgent it makes me want to climb a bell tower with a high-powered rifle. -
I think people feel intimidated be the percieved "freedom" of his playing..... ....He was a total f***ing dude.....end of.
I've never really had a view on him until watching that clip. All I can say is what utter dog sh1t. Firstly, stop twiddling with f***ing knobs you gay. No one wants to see that. Also, its all loops. No one likes looping apart from Steve Lawson. And whats with that distorted noise? That ain't music where I come from. That's a f*** up. I cannot believe anyone could tap their foot to that. The audience are on the verge of starting a slow clap. By the end of that, I'd be looking forward to listening to that split-arse singing about a yellow taxi. I have a simple rule with music. If an musician is only liked by people who play that instrument, stay well clear. As for being a total f***ing dude - I'd describe him as a f***ed up junkie who should have been more careful when picking his fights. -

A question - why do naughty people appear to get moderated, while rip-off merchants don't? Or do they? <Dons suit>
Because rip-off merchants dissappear when they're found out and us naughty people don't.
The country scene in Nashville is full of players that are scarily good at reading, can improvise effortlessly over complex changes, yet manage to play half as many notes as even the most minimalist hacks would on their sessions... Alex
That would explain my fondness of country.
Mainly, and this is a VERY important point, the ability to read music DOES NOT and has NEVER impeded anyone's ability to improvise or be creative. If someone can't improvise or create original lines, it is because they have never learned how, NOT because they can read.
Not sure if I agree. I mean, you make sense, and it seems logical. I just struggle to explain why I rarely seem to like the music created by those who are technicaly/theorectically very strong. OK, maybe all this Jazz nonsense is creative. Creative doesn't mean good though. Bilbo, would you be playing Jazz if you didn't spend so much time studying theory? Or would you be out there in leather trousers, thrusting your groin at a woman under half your age whilst rockin' out? The music that inspires me usually consists of 3 notes. Y'know those tunes that make you think "It's so simple! How has no one thought of this before?". People who know more seem to struggle to keep it so simple. They find it boring. Hence Jazz.
