1. I admire his skill. But the tune? Call me ignorant/arogant or whatever, but I genuinely don't believe there is anyone who likes that music. Its all just an act and conspiracy to become accepted amongst the middle classes. But the guys got talent. And a lot of time on his hands I would expect. He should spend his time doing something constructive though. Like composing something good. Or curing cancer.
2. Very clever. But what an utter sh*t piece of music. Sounds like a parody of w***-jazz.
3. Let me know if you chance your mind on this. It would be good to keep it in the West Kent area.
4. Elvis = Good. Jaz = Bad. Also, your doing well to box off 8 songs in one session, regardless of how technical they are.
5. But I don't agree with the idea of buying something when you know there is a fair chance you'll return it. For me, I take online shopping to mean"Buy it Now" and not "Try it now". If I bought a bass online, I would hope that its new, ie not been in some other blokes house or at his rehearsal. If have the same issue with my missus. On principle I only return items to shops if they're defective. She buys things with the attitude "its's ok, I'll see what I think when I get home, I can always return it". If I was a shopkeeper (and the laws were different/sensible/fair), when she strolled in saying she wants to return a perfectly good pair of shoes because they clash with the curtains, I would tell her to f*ck off out of my shop. Indecisive b*tch.
6. nah, I just pick smaller bouncers.
7. Outside of bass playing, my other hobby is starting fights with bouncers. Jaco has been an inspiration.
8. Same as the above. Not picking up a bass until I was 25 years of age. Not much I can do about that now though. Also continually being a spineless loser who hasn't got the b*llocks to join a band because I'm so critical of my sh*te playing. This is ongoing.
9. I love the way The Ox played bass, but I hate the sound that comes out. His lines are amazing, I just hate the tone. Much prefered it on his earlier stuff before he started putting batteries in his bass. Batteries in a bass?????? I still think the man's a legend though.
10. Well done JJ. He'll be chuffed. I know he follows the forum.
11. It looks like the type of bass that would be chosen by a female who is a member of our much loved travelling community. This would look good hanging on the wall next to an airbrushed image of a wolf howling at the moon on an outcrop of rock. In a caravan.
12. Its looks sh*t.
13. But I play a Jazz!!! Does this also mean that Warwick players will be sent to Coventry? They should be. Filthy buggers.
14. I've got a recent MIA Jazz but got a tort guard fitted with the holes drilled below the G. I'm thinking of getting a couple of holes drilled and fitting an old school style thumb rest below the G. Firstly I think it looks cool and secondly I like the tone produced when playing with my thumb. Wouldn't do it often, but sounds good occassionaly. It also means I can replace the orignal pick guard the holes will be covered up anyway.
15.
Ha ha hey didn't you used to have a "The"?
Yeah, my original profile was deleted following some "unpleasantness".
16. I'm an intriguing guy.
17. Welcome Steve. How long have you been playing for?
18. Carefull - he'll be on here with a toothache, going mental at you soon.
19. Welcome.
20. How much does it weigh? Apologies if it says on the build thread, but I can't find it.
21. Apparently Lord Lucan had it.
22. Part of my objection to overly technical excercises probably stems from my dislike of overly polished performances. I like a live band to be a little rough around the edges. I aso tend to like those albums recorded in weeks rather than months. Likewise, my favourite vocalists tend to be people who can't "sing" in the the traditional sense (Liam Gallagher anyone?). Pretty lucky really, given that I'm an incredibly sloppy player and can't sing for sh*t.
23. Have you ever taught someone as handsome as me?
24. dlloyd, I would quote you, but it crashes my PC at work! I agree there is a need to develop and practice motor skills. Its something that I'm working on currently. God knows I need to do. However, I've found that I'm able to do this whilst still playing something "musical" (to my ears). The difficulty and confusion arises from definitions of musicality. One man's musical is another man's tuneless Jazz noodling! I find some technical excercises to similar to those awful "hand trainers" you see advertised at the back of American bass/guitar magazines. Maybe if I had the time, I would do both musical and purely technical excercises. Unfortunately, I don't have the time. I therefore strive to combine the two.
25. I haven't read the last few pages of this, but there seems to be some confusion regarding the original criticism of Janek' article. Firstly, of course practice doesn't make you a worse player. Thats insane. I wish I could practice more. Even up to 10 hours a day. Practice is good, y'hear me? PRACTICE IS GOOD! The issue is (for me) what you practice. For me, if the practice is too academic, it can detract from the musicality. I have suggested that this is perhaps why the majority of bass players I like are not classically trained. For some reason I tend to prefer the approach taken by those that haven't been overly concerned with theory. This is just an observation, I'm not sure why this is, how could I be? Sometimes its about finding what works for you. This may not deemed classically/technically "right", but if it sounds good, go with it. If James Jamerson went to a modern bass clinic he'd get a few funny looks for his right hand technique. He would also be able to wipe the floor (from a melodic perspective) with everyone else there I should think. Likewise, there are people on this forum that if siiting an exam about bass theory would wipe the floor with McCartney. And of course, by their own admittance, I'm sure these people are not half the bass player that Macca is. A thought occured to me last night. A lot of these academic excercises don't sound particularly musical to me. especially the Jazz improvistaion stuff. Bilbo made a point during the "I hate Jazz" thread about jazz being a language and that in order to truly appreciate it, you need to learn it. Maybe that by doing these academic excercises, I would learn the language. I'd also start to appreciate Jazz. I'd then start playing Jazz. Maybe that is why a lot of technically gifted bass players end up playing jazz? Maybe they have reached a (technical/academic) level that means pumping 8th notes is no longer satisfying to them? This would certainly explain why I tend not to like the music of these type of players. Who knows. And once again. PRACTICE is not bad. I'd just rather practice with a drummer and a guitarist than sitting in front of Bass Guitar Magazine. God, don't I go on?
