1. Wholly cow. That is spectacular.
 2.
Had a Line6 LD150, great for the bedroom/practice.. Pants in a gigging situation In my opinion you would be better getting more quality sound than bells and whistles for your money
100% agreed. Laney RB combos worth a look IMHO, there are a few different types but the RB4 is 160w in a 1x15" Celestion package for £180 or for £270 you can have 300w. My concern with Ashdown MAG stuff was always the reliability problem, don't know if that has improved or not recently.
 3.
Whichever ones spend the most on advertising... Alex
I'm waiting for anything distributed by JHS to ever get a bad review anywhere ..... or Taylor/Digitech/Washburn from Sound Tech for that matter. Maybe they advertise heavily because their products are flawless?
 4.
Thats a really interesting idea and the question in my mind is how different? There are Stingrays now with mahogany bodies and Mike Brooks did a review in BGM of the 20th Ann SR5 with the mahogany tone block. I would have said smoke and mirrors but he was convinced there was something to it.
Fairly subtle when you're talking about those sorts of things. In electric guitar I reckon I could pick out the difference between a Les Paul with a maple cap to one without, all other things being equal, without too much trouble. These subtleties are what makes a person's bond with their instrument though ... on one bass with the dials set a certain way, with the compressor set to this and a little bit of overdrive from that, you will know how your bass responds on 'that' one note that you hit a certain way on your way to the next root. Pick up another instrument and it will behave differently in a way that maybe only you will notice. You don't have to be a virtuoso player either, my Ibanez Wimbish sounds rubbish when played with a pick. It just sounds bad. Probably something in the setup but I don't mind because I like everything else about how it sounds, so I'll try a bolt-on or a passive or a mahogany or alder instrument and get a different response. Finally ........ if people who spend £000000s on hand-crafted basses want to believe that the blob of mahogany in the neck joint or the 2mm slivers of wenge in the neck or the brass block attached to the underside of the bridge makes all the difference to their playing, can't we just let them have their fun??
 5. No freebies here ... so someone tell me which 12-inchers they thought were good?
 6.
Where was that then? Got a link?
http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=23075&st=20 Apparently "most of Basschat" believes the only difference between a BO and an NT construction is price and to believe otherwise is to buy into marketing hype!! In the context of tonewoods, if you made a P-Bass from mahogany and with a mahogany neck it would most certainly sound different to how it would if you made the whole thing from maple. The shades in between are more subtle so I think it'd be very interesting to put a USA G&L and a Tribute in a blind test where the hardware and pickups are identical and the primary difference is in the 'quality' or 'grade' of swamp ash in the body.
 7.
I'd be inclined to agree it makes less difference than anyone thinks. Some woods are certainly deader when you feel them vibrating. Harware, and neck joint have far more effect.
I got shot down in flames a while back on this forum for having the temerity to claim that neck joints make any difference to how a bass sounds...... !
 8.
I think it would actually be nicer without the scratchplate(s)!
+1 - Agreed!
 9.
300 notes? Bargain! Oh I wish I wasn't selling stuff. I much prefer buying.
Seconded.
 10. The eagle-eyed amongst you will notice I only just bought this from Prosebass ... but it doesn't quite sound how I want it to. This is a punchy cab and I've moved towards a rounder sound, call it less edgy or whatever you will. It's extremely light, looks ace, has the Hartke sound and was made in the USA for what difference that makes to you. Anyway it's (obviously) in exactly the same nick as I bought it in (a few scuffs around the corner pieces but no tears in the carpet, no dents in the grille) and so I'm basically going to sell it for a very slight loss compared to what I bought it for: - Collect from me in Leeds for £70 - I will ship it to you in the UK for £80 Either way I lose a few quid but it's a giveaway really at this price, I think it'd make an excellent extension to a 15" combo/half stack or maybe the small cab you plug your head into for home practice. I have no camera but will get some photos off a phone if necessary. Would be interested in trades (plus cash from me) for any affordable and lightweight 2x10, 1x12 or similar 8 ohm cab to go with my lightweight Eden 15". Maybe bring on some of that Ashdown mudiness to cover my terrible playing?! Nik
 11.
The amplifier does not "see" the power rating of a cab - it only "sees" the impedance. If both cabs are the same impedance it will split the output power equally between them. Although on paper it looks like there might be a problem here (i.e. potentially 375W into a 350W cab) in practice this is unlikely to be a problem. It is most unlikely that you would ever extract the full power of 750W from the amp in such way as to damage anything. As always, the most important advice is to listen. If you hear unplanned distortion, simply back off the power a little.
Are you 100% on this? Not because I doubt it but because my question was very similar. My amp is rated 300w RMS @ 4 ohms. I am about to start using two cabs, as follows: 1. Rated 250w RMS @ 8 ohms 2. Rated 150w PEAK @ 8 ohms. My understanding is then that I will be running at a combined 4 ohms, and that my 300w will be 'split' 50/50 between the cabs. Is that right? This way, if I am running my amp flat out I will be getting an average of 150w to each cab, and peaks above that. However, I don't turn the master volume up beyond seven and keep the preamp gain fairly low (around half) to keep it clean on the way in. Am I in trouble or is this a safe enough way to get some extra air moving as opposed to my previous setup of one 300w PEAK cab @ 8 ohms? Nik
 12.
I've got a box in my loft you can have if you're coming this way anytime soon Pete, 'cos you're a mate you can have it for a fiver.
I think you may have misunderstood the meaning of "cheap at half the price"!
 13.
Have sent PM
I will be terribly upset if you have bagged the cab after I was just giving you advice on how to get in there first!!
 14. Have PM'd you mate, will absolutely, 100% definitely take the 210 cab if it's not already gone. *crosses fingers*
 15. PMT are doing them!
 16. WD Music will make any pickguard they don't already stock.
 17.
Come on noisedude! You know I'm the man! My (exaggerated) hatred of Warwicks is well documented. If they release a passive bass in a decent styling (with a J neck), I could be converted. But as it stands today, Warwick don't produce a bass I like. I don't hate the badge, I hate what its stuck on. D'ya get me? Also, in reference to my manners, someone said something retarded. Not just retarded in my opion. Retarded full stop. I'm the type of person who doesn't ignore these things. I'm sure XB26354 is a big boy. I'm sure he's a very nice chap. If I meet him I'll buy him a waffle. Can you "come down on my side now"? The bed's to big without you.
It's the first thread I've been in on here that's had a bit of 'bite' so no, I'm not making friends with you. I'll have more fun if we leave it as it is so I can provoke you whilst taking the moral high ground in some other threads. I'm a long way from Tonbridge so I'll let you post me a cheque for my waffle.
 18.
Thats more like it! I don't play Warwicks, becuase I don't like the stylying. The body shapes tend to make the necks feel too long for my liking. I also don't like the sound of active basses and wood finishes. This means that I've never liked a Warwick. Nothing to do with the brand. They have a distinctive style across the range and its not a style I like. When I say "paying £250 for a lesser instrument" - this is true. Out of all the MIM's I've played, I couldn't find one I liked as much as my MIA. I even admit such an instrument may exist, I just couldn't find one that wasn't a "lesser instrument". Nothing snobbish about that. As for being rude, I think I've been quite polite??! I can also stand by every comment I've made. I'm not going to use that quote again, but can he?? Whoah yeah!!! Game, Set, Match - The Big Beef Chief. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0I5-Xs2fM0g
So you stand by the comment, "I would play any brand (apart from Warwick) if I liked the bass," by saying that it's nothing to do with the brand?! That's not 'standing by', there, chief. That's contradicting yourself. What you say is that if you like the bass, you STILL won't play it BECAUSE it's a Warwick. Are you standing by that or not? Because if you are, then you have to NOT stand by the claim that it's nothing to do with the brand. And if you think you've been polite then we have pretty much identified the problem, and it's nothing to do with guitars. You ain't won nothing, chief, I barely disagree with your opinion and still the way you contradict yourself makes it impossible for me to come down on your side!!
 19.
Noisedude, I'm getting bored of quoting this! "The MIA is for snobs that have to have Made in the USA on the headstock" Go and read the post! It doesn't say "often people by MIA's becuase they have a snobbish attitude towards where basses are built". (I agree) It says, to re-itereate: "The MIA is for snobs that have to have Made in the USA on the headstock" Get it? One more time? "The MIA is for snobs that have to have Made in the USA on the headstock" What part of this are you struggling with? If I were to say "I don't like black people because black people commit crime" could I get away with it if I then say "but I didn't say all black people, just some do"? Would you be so understanding to my view? Of course not. I'm going to have a lie down. This is bringing me out in hives. Mother??
Yes but if you apply that system of taking a general, provocative debate point and allowing no leeway then you are in the sticky stuff yourself:
I've never played a Mex Jazz that sounds as good. There may be some out there......... Thankfully, £250 isn't considerable enough to me to warrant settling for a lesser instrument.
Which is it? There are some out there that are as good? Or you have to spend £250 more so as to not have a lesser instrument? Still I guess it's ok because:
Don't worry about it, everyone is allowed to make a mistake.
Ulp, except then you said:
I'm far from a brand snob.... I really couldn't give a sh*t what it says on the headstock (as long as its not Warwick).
And then,
For the record - I'm not a big Fender fan. I play one, but would play any brand (apart from Warwick) if I liked the bass.
Yeah, can't spot any major problems there ... I mean, it would be retarded to say people buy American instruments out of snobbishness but not at all retarded to not play a bass THAT YOU ACTUALLY LIKE simply because of the name on the headstock. Clearly you have developed an excellent rule for everyone else that doesn't apply to yourself!!
I don't think the issue is me being rude or not, perhaps I've just highlighted that you said a silly thing?
I think the issue at this point is probably that you've said at least as many silly things as him and are the only one who has felt the need to punctuate your views with personal comments such as calling him "full of sh*t" and "retarded".
 20. Also, we have FAILED to address the PRIMARY ISSUE OF THIS THREAD: SQUIER is not, repeat NOT spelled "SQUIRE"!!!!!!
 21.
Snob or retard? Not sure which I'd prefer really.
It doesn't sound like you have all that much choice to be honest.
 22.
From this, I can't really tell if you agree with me or not??
I'm somewhere in between.
As for the "friendly face of xenophobia" thing, I can only comment on why I chose and MIA over a MIM. I couldn't give a sh*t if MIA stood for "Made in Africa" and MIM stood for "Made in Massachusetts". In my experience MIA's tend to be better quality than MIM's. This is what I care about. To suggest that someone who agrees with that view is a snob is pretty f***ing stupid.
That wasn't the view, though. The view he said was snobbish was the one whereby somebody wants the MIA because it is MIA and therefore 'must' be better. On another tack, it has been my experience on internet forums that in the YooEssAy in particular there is still a lot of residual, well, suspicion of 'foreign' guitars. It's not because a Chinese guitar is by definition lower quality (because that's obviously nonsense), but by talking about 'Far Eastern' build quality you can avoid the underlying issue where the average hick from Tennessee won't buy anything from that close to 'Nam. Which seems to me to be just as ignorant as saying "it's made in America, so it must be better".
 23.
I'm not being negative towards Fender. I don't like Gibsons either. I'm sharing the love equally.
You're very generous!! What really interests me isn't whether the views of forward-minded bass playing chaps like us have changed, it's whether you can actually be taken seriously by any promoter or A&R man if you turn up to a gig or recording session with a Squier, Vintage, Shine, Rockbass or any other brand than Fender, Gibson or Rickenbacker (in the case of indie/rock at least)?
