Std has USA CS pickup. Have never actually played a Special so cant comment on whether these differences amount to much. I do know that my 2012 Std is superbly well built and plays beautifully. hth

What cabs were you using it with? Have read reports that LM's are sensitive when using certain cabs at 4ohms (think it was SWRs?). If the actual impedence of the cabs is slightly under 4Ohms - apparantly some are - the heads would cut out. Either way, as its new return it for a replacement. HTH

FWIW another +1 for the Focusrite 2i2. Using it with a Macbook it's superb, very low latency & makes recording a breeze. Don't have much experience with other interfaces / zoom etc so can't really help with that.

[/quote] I have a 2011 US standard Jazz (bought 2nd hand) and a 2012 US standard P (bought new) and they're both routed as per the OP, including the CNC-locator hold / stash receptacle. It does seem like this could be easily improved on by Fender to give people the option; though personally I think the Jaco sans-guard thing looks crap so I can live with it.

Great thread. thanks to all, esp Mr Foxen & Dan for all the advice re valves...priceless info. Have taken delivery of an LB30 last week and am absolutely gobsmacked with how great it sounds with my Pbass & Jazz. With the P & flats, its just chocolatey rich & smooth; with the J & rounds its bright, edgy and deep. Love this amp! Just one Q - haven't checked but am sure mine has Ruby branded EL84s in the power section (Chinese amp). They sound lovely to me, but is there any point in me swapping them out for something fancier? I'm gonna buy a set of spares anyway so any advice on what to get for this specific amp greatly appreciated.

A number of posters (including the OP) have all reported that they have experienced this, have given a solution (lightly sanding the neck to take the gloss down) and have even attempted to explain the physics of this (sanding reduces the surface area in contact between skin and neck). TBH the physics of it is not a great mystery - see stiction and coefficients of friction and how these are reduced with an irregular surface vs a smooth one. Even if you haven't experienced it on a guitar neck, you must have experienced it when running a finger across a damp, smooth surface eg a glass window. The sticking-then-releasing sensation is caused by stiction and is the same phenomenon. If you ran yr finger down a non-smooth surface eg a piece of frosted glass the stiction would not occur.

OP, welcome back If I recall rightly weren't you the lass that posted a few months ago about how you have been through a load of basses in recent years in an attempt to sort out wrist pain / comfort issues? If it is you, then my suggestion would be that, if you havent already, you would be best served by trying to sort out the underlying wrist problem first - having been through something similar I can say that I don't think the fix lies with an endless succession of different basses. Sure, neck profiles are different and are a personal thing, but I think that you'd be better served getting some advice/physio re your wrist first. I don't think your question can really be answered by folks on a forum, as your health issues are specific to you and can't really be answered by others. What suits me will not necessarily suit you etc. Hope you don't mind me talking you down from a possible new purchase, its just that IME the root of the problem lies elsewhere. OTOH, if you just wanna GAS for a new bass, then go right ahead & please post pics !!
