1. Now that's what I call quick. Good price too!
2. The pro v is pretty rare, especially the translucent black. They come up on ebay occasionally. Quite nicely done, but you need to like a wide fretboard . Some of the early ones had pick up issues with 4 string variants fitter rather than 5. Good hunting...
3.
I'm firmly in the hobby bass player camp. I play in 3 bands, none of which are busy. I'd say 2 are a decent standard as pub bands go, one lot are a load of old blaggers but very nice fellows. I started bass late in life, got my first one 10 years ago, first gig at 50 which was 7 years ago now. I've been playing consistently since then. I think 'solid' describes what I do. I have no theory, I don't know my arpeggios from my elbow but can find any note on the fretboard. Eventually. Can't improvise, simply copy and paste. On the plus side I have ( so far ) been able to learn and play anything that has been asked of me with a reasonable enough touch to remain in bands with far better musicians than I will ever be. A deception that I hope I will continue to get away with.
+10 for this. Just about sums me up, though I just play in the one band, though a bit for my guitar teacher at student concerts and a bit in church too
4. A great player and soulful too. RIP
5. I love the look of those. Lovely.
6. Glad you're enjoying the Longhorn Paul!
7. Cool! Just twigged your avatar too
8. For me, they are great for listening to individual songs, but an album's worth at one sitting is a bit too much.
9. Last night was our second gig at a pub in York - we're a covers band. Our audience was mainly friends and friends of friends which helped make it a pretty special occasion. We were pretty nervous but we relaxed as the night progressed and ended up feeling exhausted but having had a great time! Earlier, I had decided to give the Thunderbird its first outing in anger have messed about with the bridge to lower the action. Classic "you shouldn't do this", especially as the Bird clearly needs some expertise greater than mine to fettle it properly! Anyway, despite some playability issues up beyond the 12th fret on the G, it sounded completely awesome! Also very nice to have got 2 gigs off the back of last night's show
10. That's the Winning Post, Bishopthorpe Road. We'll be on at about 9pm £3 on the door.
11. ^^This. Great player, terrific band. I'll be listening - thanks for the heads up to the OP.
12. That black Les Paul is very smart - can see why you missed it!
13. At first, it was Jack Bruce what made me do it. Then, rather later, a cocktail of JJB/Bruce Foxton /Paul Gray/Phil Lynott gave further impetus.
14. Not so much "relic" as "run over by a burning tank".
15.
Would love to give one a try.....Macari's in London have two in their window but at around £1000 its a big buy that needs a good test drive and some thought.....but non reverse and Pelham Blue is a great colour. I think PMT have a couple, they're website will say which branches:)
16. That's a very nice looking Tbird! I know there are those who question why they've gone for those pups, but why not? Makes an interesting variant and those pups sound great on the EB.
17. Really very nice! Tho I can feel my discs twinging just thinking about it!
18. Thanks Sam . Actually, having put a wide strap on, the neck dive is non existent! Should also acknowledge background info on these and their relations from Paul (Nancy Johnson) and Sean (Billy Apple). Thanks guys! Rod
19. Well after much heeing, hawing and general all purpose procrastinating, I've gone and bought myself a Gibson Thunderbird courtesy of the estimable DatonaRik. It's a lovely looking beastie, nicely put together but with a couple of minor dings. Think I'm going to take the string height down a tad and maybe, swap the bridge out for a Hiptone. The 3 point is quite a weird thing to behold if you're used to a BBOT, but I've not had the chance to get tee'd off with it yet . Trouble is that'll start the debate around "shall I stay black or go chrome?" I'm liking the tone on this, especially with the bridge pup uppermost as it were, but will have to do a bit of EQing, especially in a band context. It's comfortable to play, especially sitting down and the neck dive is minimal and therefore miles better in that regard than certain other basses! I got the chance to A/B one of these against the Epi Classic Pro before Christmas. Build quality was very good on the Epi but it was noticeably heavier and darker sounding. So, in the knowledge of The Law and given the sun has been out today, here's some pictures of the Bird... 20. Sailin' Shoes by Little Feat. Lovely stuff!
21. I bought one of these from a second hand shop in Cardiff in the late 70's - in this colour but a white pg I think. It was "well used" but great fun.
22. Met up with Rik last night to relieve him of his very nice Gibson Thunderbird. Rik has been great to deal with, great comms and very solicitous. We spent a while talking bass and assorted other stuff over drinks on Rik. A prince among men who I'd be happy to deal with again. Cheers!
23. Been a long wait Sean, but good luck with this. I can't wait, so goodness knows how you feel about it!
