  1. How effective is the memory foam? Does it just ensure you don't forget which key a particular song is in, or does it enable you to remember all the notes you need to play without any mistakes?
  2. It sounds like it’s probably a customised one. Let’s hope it’s a pro job and the extra large pickguard isn’t there to cover over any amateur lutherie.
  3. I don't think they do exist except for ones which may have been defretted by/for the owner. I don't recall ever having seen a fretless danelectro bass.
  4. I used a carlsbro amp briefly in the 80s. Maybe they’ve improved over the years, but In your position I’d be looking into getting an Ashdown rig - possibly secondhand.
  5. The ad is one big cringe. I love thunderbirds, but I would be embarrassed to be seen in public with this. This is a collector's bass not one for playing. If enough american lawyers and dentists buy one there'll probably be a never ending string of GS Gibson signatures for them to collect like the vast array of Slash signature guitars Gibson have released.
  6. Despite the photo having been taken with a potato rather than a camera, the pickup cover looks white rather than cream so I'd say there's zero chance of it being a DiMarzio. I think *he* should buy the bass so he can convert it a bit more.
  7. So that would date it to being prior to that infamous night out in Langney where something happened behind the pizza place that was to be every bit as transformative as Dylan's 1966 motorcycle accident.
  8. Athough usually used with guitar, the zvex super hard on might be appropriate
  9. Could be - I would expect the tuners to be a bit more wonky if it was genuine
  10. Oh my, that's a hard one...
  11. That is one hideous looking bass. I'm not surprised they had to find a passing hobo to pose with it, anyone else would have been to embarrased to be seen with it.
  12. You might recall this 'brand' from ebay. it looks like the purchaser has decided to unload their bass, and the value of the conversion appears to have had a negative effect on the price. https://www.cashconverters.co.uk/shop/music-tv--video/musical-instruments/guitars--string-instruments/bass-guitar/050000085678
  13. This question reminds me of a bass viol (aka viola da gamba) I saw in a museum. This was a cello-sized forerunner to the double bass which had frets made of the same gut used for the strings tied on the neck. According to his diary, Samuel Pepys enjoyed playing his bass viol.
  14. My basses range from around 21" to 42" I also have 30", 32" and 34" basses. There's no real problem going from one to another. The 43" one is an NS-Design CR5M so it is fretless. The dot markers help me stay in tune, and I would probably be a bit lost without them.
  15. Although I have multiple Fender Precisons, Mustangs and Musicmasters, and Thunderbirds, I currently only have one Danelectro longhorn, one Hohner B2A, one Kala U-Bass, and one Guild Starfire II, Does that count?
  16. I'm surprised his audience of fourteen year olds have that kind of money, but I suspect he would probably have got more if he had offered a jpg of it as an NFT.
  17. Loading an ashdown cabinet after a particularly exhausting gig, I missed the boot and clumped the rear light cluster of my car with the corner of the cab causing a hairline crack. The next time it rained heavily the light filled up with water. It cost me £70 for a new light assembly.
  18. I think richlite is made from layers of paper soaked in resin & compressed. The fingerboard of my Little Martin acoustic is richlite,as is the bridge, but he body is HPL printed to look like koa, and the neck is thin strips of laminated spruce. These guitars get a lot of hate from some quarters but I really like mine. I was wondering more about peoples opinions on Blackwood tek, which unlike richlite can pass for rosewood or ebony visually. I think bass players are probably more willing to use instruments using non-traditional materials than guitarists - how often do you see someone playing a carbon fibre guitar? I’m sure status sell a lot more basses than guitars.
  19. Blackwood tek is a technologically modified wood used in fingerboards as a substitute for rosewood or ebony. I was wondering what opinions people have on it. I believe epiphone 60s thunderbirds now have Indian laurel fingerboards, but the earlier ones, which were called the vintage pro thunderbird, had fingerboards made from Blackwood tek. Other companies such as reverend also use blackwood tek for fingerboards. Blackwood tek starts off as a specific type of pine, Pinus radiata, and it is taken through through 'a technological process that uses natural products, without plastics or other petroleum derivatives.' This involves dye, resin, heat, and compression to make a much denser material than the original wood. The resultant material has the appearance and properties of rosewood or ebony. The fingerboards on my vintage pro thunderbirds look like a nice dark piece of rosewood - ie much better looking than a swirly cheap looking piece of Indian laurel, and I cannot see any downsides in using this for fingerboards.
  20. I've had both types. I sold both of the neotechs I had, but still have several comfort strapps.
  21. I've not been tempted to purchase a Harley Benton lately. I used to have a HB uke bass but had to send two back before receiving one without QC issues whoch kind of took the shine off the experience. Some of the cheaper basses and guitars look like good platforms for modding, and their higher priced ones look to be very good value but they don't really excite me like a nice Fender mustang (bass or guitar) would.
  22. I have not tried this, so I offer no guarantees, but if the speaker is going to be replaced or reconed anyway I would probably try holding the affected area of the speaker over a steaming kettle and apply pressure to the front & back of the cone to flatten out the creases, taking care of course not to get steam into the central part of the speaker.
  23. A bit of steam might get those creases out.
  24. Clippers are something used to give you a haircut. Athough there is overlap between these three types of pedal, an overdrive will typically sound quite different from a fuzz and if an all-encompassing tern is needed I'd probably just use the term 'distortion'.
