Just measured the nut on my '90 MIJ '62 RI with a ruler - it seems to be a gnat's todger over 44mm - which I think equates to about 1.75". No idea of the radius, but front to back it seems shallower then my other basses & has narrow vintage fretwire.
-
Are you certain the '91 isn't 1.75" wide? My 1990 MIJ '62 RI has a 1.75" nut - did Fender change it that year?

New strings? Could be a dodgy one in the set. I got a set of short scale GHS flats when I bought my squier SS jag & the E string was dead out of the packet - dull & no volume. They sent me a replacement & it was fine.
-
Hit it a few more times & call it mojo

whenever I've been playing my stratacoustic guitar or tanglewood acoustic bass my fingers get an unpleasant metallic smell which I don't get with any other basses/guitars. Is just me or is that normal? Are there any acoustic strings tht don't do that? I'll probably put electric strings on the stratacoustic when I next change them, so that's not a problem. I use Thomastik AB344 Phosphor Bronze Acoustic Bass Strings on tanglewood. I use flats on all of my other basses (Thomastics if possible) has anyone used Thomastic jazz flats on an acoustic? Any other recommendations? How about those LaBella black nylon wrapped strings - anyone used those on an acoustic. I'm not too fussed about volume as long as its audible at home playing along to MP3s - for gigs & even quiet acoustic rehearsals it needs to go through an amp already.

does anyone regret selling their first bass
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to SidVicious1978's topic in General Discussion
Mine was a late 70s black 'yamato' japcrap jazz copy. £75 new from Soho Soundhouse in Soho Square. Ripped the frets out & flogged it for £35 when I bought my first Fender in '82 which I still own. Haven't regretted getting rid of the Yamato for a moment. -
I'm OK as I don't have a computer & never go on the internet

What makes a bass perceivable better than another in comparison has a lot to do with the hardware used (are squire affinity basses still fitted with those nasty enclosed tuners?) and finishing - I rolled the fingerboard edge of my squire ss jag bass and it plays much better than stock. My Japanese mustang has better hardware as standard than the much cheaper squier, but I also had to roll the fingerboard edge & make a new wiring harness with cts pots & switchcraft jack to replace the stock bits.
-
After owning it for a few months, I have finally got around to rolling the lower edge of the fingerboard on my Squier Jaguar short scale using the 'stubby screwdriver' technique - compress the wood between each pair frets with the side of the blade to round of the edge. This instantly made it feel like a more expensive bass. Who else does this to their basses & what's your technique?
-
I have a MIJ Mustang, a Squier SS Jaguar and a danelectro longhorn - any of those would do the job, but the Fender mustang is streets ahead of the others.

I can't see myself ever finding a reason to replace my Little Mark II & Schroeder 1212L cab. Together they make a great lightweight rig. I used it at a fairly large pub gig on Friday & even though the soundman ran a cable from the DI out of the amp to the PA, after the gig he told me he didn't use the DI at all - the amp filled the room with warm chewy bass perfectly and I wasn't pushing it hard.

Sounds like the girl in the video is using some kind of chorus effect. If that's what you like about the sound, perhaps try one of these

HipShot Extender too short!
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to allighatt0r's topic in Accessories and Misc
Hipshot have always been helpful when I've emailed them - perhaps they're away of this problem and can provide a solution. I had the same issue with the GB7 I put on my old epi t-bird. It worked OK, but the string post should have been made longer to make up for the gubbings hipshot add to the back of the tuner. -
I'm sure there was a thread on here about someone with exactly the same pick up problem on the same model bass.
It kind of rings a bell, now you mention it or did I just succumb to the power of suggestion?
Have you thought about swapping it for a VM mustang which only has one pick up anyway?
My mustang requirements are met with my CIJ (until I find a 1966 daphne blue one in mint condition at a time when I have the equivalent amount going spare)

Otis will be upset if it doesn't get replaced quickly when I send it back - its the first time he's showed an interest in any of my basses.
-
Apart from these problems the bass is lovely, but the split is the deal-breaker. I'll just ask Thomann to check over the replacement to ensure its perfect. To let one issue past QC is unfortunate, but two is careless.
-
bumholes! it has to go back. I'm gutted - I just found this split in the wood by where the neck is joined the body probably caused by cackhanded screwing. I hope the replacement is as light as this one. Oh well. Another week or so to wait.
-
Cheers chaps. I'll probably be happy to fix it myself if its just a simple soldering job - I really don't want to risk sending it back & getting someone else's repaired one back. I've just tried it with the LMII/1212L - With the jazz pickup solo, there is actually a very tiny, almost inaudible signal through the amp and the pickup makes a deep 'thump' through the amp when it is tapped by the fingertip. Anyone seen/heard something similar happen before? Any ideas? dodgy wiring or dodgy pickup perhaps?

I ordered this the other day to take advantage of the Fender cashback offer. It was delivered an hour or so ago, so I've not got used to it yet. It seems a lot of bass for £165. Its a beautiful candy apple red short scale squier jaguar. It feels remarkably similar to my CIJ Fender mustang, but with a satin, almost unfinished neck rather than the mustang's glossy finish. It is so light that I was initially a little worried I'd just signed for an empty box when I took it in. It seems to be lighter than my Danelectro longhorn, but when I play it unplugged I can feel the note, so its nice & resonant. I also got some GHS short scale flatwounds to go on it, but they're still in the packet (which says 'long scale plus' , but despite that they seem to be the right length). The bridge pickup is generally reckoned to be not up to much on these, but I've just tried it through an amp and although the Precision neck pickup seems fine - the volume and tone controls work fine on that one, the jazz bass bridge pickup is totally dead - nothing . I've not opened it up, so I don't know whether its the pickup, pot or wiring yet. QC everywhere else seems to be second to none - no sharp edges on the frets no buzzes or rattles , everything fits tightly. Before it came I was thinking about doing the a CTS pots / switchcraft jack upgrade and chucking in a better jazz pickup anyway at some point, but not necessarily immediately and I like single pickup basses such as precisions & mustangs. Accordingly I'm not sure whether I should send it back & risk getting it replaced with one with a perfect pickup but heavier with not so good fretwork or sort out the issue myself?

get a proper drummer in & 'promote' him to percussionist - bongos, tambourine or cowbell. Or give the band a USP & make use of his pole dancing skills - in a kind bez-type position.

Before the ban I also used to hate coming back from gigs with my gear, clothes & hair stinking. My missus would demand I put my clobber straight in the washing machine, have a bath & wash my hair as soon as I got in through the door - before sitting down with a single malt & some cheese & crackers (my post gig snack). My fuzzy carpeted cabs always stank of other peoples' airborne effluent for days after a gig and I could even smell it on cables and my bass strap. I'd never buy a smelly guitar/bass. I really don't understand that some of my daughters' friends in their mid teens have taken up smoking - I can only put it down to them being extremely stupid. The thing about pubs closing because of the smoking ban is to a certain extent bollocks - cheap supermarket / white van to Calais alcohol is probably more the culprit there. Before the ban I never went in pubs unless I was playing as I hated the stink so much and I know quite a few people who feel the same.

Well the rebate offer has ended. I *may* have been able to sneak an order just in time to take advantage.

Vintage Fender Bass & Amp, stunning!!!!!
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to Rick's Fine '52's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
is it normal for there to be two types of speakers in the amp? 2 with square backs & 2 round. I recall something about a seller referred to as '2 gnomes in the attic' where there was a disgruntled buyer
