1.
I gigged the hohner the most and it was great for touring with but I guess I'd go back to the 70/80s P-bass and actually get it set up as opposed to thinking 'this doesn't play well!'
I owned my '81 precision for over 20 years and for most of those thought it was a bit of a dog before learning to do setups & taking it to the gallery to get the frets levelled & crowned. It still weights more than John Prescott & Eric Pickles combined though.
2. I'd get just a Squier Short Scale Candy Apple red Jaguar bass and a set of flatwounds.
3. I think the bridge pickup is actually piezos in the bridge
4. I sent him this:
Thanks for adding the pic. Unfortuantely this confirms (with other details) that this bass is not a genuine Fender mustang but a Squier bronco modified to look like a mustang. Mustangs have a dot marker between the highest two frets which is not present on a bronco or on the one you are selling. I suggest you change the listing to reflect this.
& got back this
hi, I have checked by an expert and you're right. I made a bad purchase. I now remove the instrument from ebay. I thank you immensely
& it has indeed been withdrawn.
5. I didn't get as far as looking at the feedback What jumped out at me was that the dot between the last two frets (nearest the body) is not present - indicating a bronco neck. I wasn't sure about the truss rod access as the pic wasn't clear, so I asked him if he had a better pic - now added. Yep its at the wrong end. I'm going to tell him (politely) that it is a modifed bronco.
6. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...ME:B:SS:GB:1123 Oh dear - I hope no one pays 70s mustang money for what appears to be a tarted up squier bronco. The first line "I do not know the history of this wonderful electric bass perfectly captures the spirit of the mid-years' 70 ..." is probably intended as a get out clause in case he's rumbled, but its listed as a Fender Mustang. If this belongs to anyone's good friend I apologise in advance. No offence intended - I'm sure he's a wonderful bloke and doesn't know anything about fenders so is entirely blameless. Please feel free to point out if you don't agree & think I am wrong. I won't post my observations yet, I'd be interested to see if anyone else can see what I think is wrong with it.
7. I tried a badass on my 81 heavy ash precision once. It took away a lot of the punch/attack/oomph. As soon as I put the BBOT back on, the punch/attack/oomph was back - there is a difference & on that precision the difference was so marked that I'm sure I'd be able to tell which bridge was fitted - even with my eyes closed. The main difference I've noticed between neck-thru & bolt-on basses is that you can't shim a neck-thru, but soundwise I dunno as its impossible to compare the same bass with both options.
8. series parallel is like the Fender S1 switch on jazzes from a few years ago - you can get a more beefy precision-like sound in the additional series position.
9.
Hope it wasn't the Marianne Faithfull one...
You mean one that never existed - as that story was made up.
10. Most all-in one jazzes I've seen were 80s US IIRC, so if this is an all-in-one mexican it could be a hoppus which is more a precision in a jazz skirt.
11. I tried loads of compressors looking for a transparent to even out my level without sounding squashed. I now use a cheap-as-chip behringer green limiter pedal and found that was what I was really after.
12. It could be one of the funny-looking all-in-one jobs, but the seller may have got his terminology confused. Get the seller to email some pics before setting off to have a look - unless its just down the road.
13. all of my basses have flats except the acoustic. love the tone & feel of an old set of TI JF344
14. I've been reliving the 80s & listening to Bauhaus Always loved "party of the first part", but never knew where the voicetrack came from Then I found this A blummin' kids' cartoon - genius!
15. We used to do that song - our arrangement based on the original version. The version on the clip sounds like there's a bass solo competing with the vocal and ruining the impact. Just my opinion though.
16. Some kid is probable very upset that he spent his pocket money on this and it dropped out of his pocket. Can't you put a notice saying "DS game found" on a lampost for a week and see if anyone claims it & can say what game it was.
17. Awww - its gone. Does the garden gnome come with it or is that extra?
18. Another LMII/1212L here - still as chuffed with both as I was when I first got them.
19. If you find one, be careful - I got my head stuck in some railings once.
20.
Erm, in the poll, which one is "basswood" and which one is "basswood"?
easy - the basswood option is for basswood, whereas the other one - the one that says basswood is for basswood.
21.
I say tomato, you say tomato
lets call the whole thing off
22. Just see this video on another thread - don't want to derail that thread, so I started a new thread at around 1:20 Ed clearly pronounces 'basswood' as 'basswood' instead of 'basswood'. So which is right 'basswood' as in 'bass' or 'basswood' as in 'bass'? I've always said basswood myself.
23. I had one of the original Korean arctic whites - that's the one with the black hardware. loved how it played and sounded & the balance was much improved once I moved the front strap button. it had a limited edition decal on the back of the headstock where it joins the neck. I only parted with it as I wanted a pro-v in natural. I believe the newer ones are chinese - not that that would put me off. I much prefer the chrome hardware -mine looked a bit too, er... 80s hair metal for an Americana band
24.
Wunjo ... very knowledgeable.
Hopefully a bit more knowledgeable than the bloke there I spoke when I mentioned that they were selling a squier bronco bass with a badly repaired 70s musicmaster neck (broken & glued headstock) as a genuine 'virtually unplayed' US musicmaster at a typical Denmark street price. It was still on their website several weeks later complete with the false description and pumped up price. It seems to have gone now - I hope some poor sucker didn't pay six times its real value. Then there was the member of staff in there who insisted that S8 on a fender serial is a reliable indicator of an instruments age & ALWAYS means that a bass was made in '78 - even on the models that didn't come out until '81
