1. Things don't change. In 1986 when the Hohner B2A "Steinbergers" were first available I went to Denmark St to buy one. One shop had one in the Window, but when I asked to try it I was told that they'd be changing the window display on Monday, so come back then. I said that I wanted to try it and possibly buy it straight away but this didn't help.

I looked in the other shops and found one hanging up, tried it and bought it. I was told the hard cases for them would be available in about a month, so I just took it in the original cardboard box.

On the way down the street I went back into the first shop where the chap had since been joined by a colleague, I took my B2A out of the box held it up and asked Mr lazy "Do you have a case for my new bass?" :) - knowing that he wouldn't, but enjoying the look on his face.

  2. Well, the list of Dean Stockists is here: http://www.deanguitars.uk.com/retail.htm, & there's a link on that page to locate any guitar.

A quick googling found one at £359 in Nottingham: http://www.lifeismusic.co.uk/guitar/Dean-D...Basic-6459.aspx(but probably not actually in stock)

It looks like some of the Dean prices have dropped - certainly the pace bass seems to have dropped a lot since I bought one. have you discussed the price issue with the chaps at the bass merchant? I'm sure they'll do their best to give you a good deal - and will change their price if it is incorrect.

  3. I use the tascam MP3 guitar trainer with headphones - I bought it as soon as it was available so the bass version wasn't available at the time. I'll probably upgrade to the new recording version as it takes SD cards so I'll be able to keep everything on one big card and it has both guitar & bass fx - the guitar fx on the one I have don't work on bass at all, so I don't use them.

  4. Just about everytime I play my Fender Stratacoustic I wish I also had an acoustic Precision bass to go with it. A fretless sunburst acoustic precision with an F hole would be perfect, and even more so if it had five strings.

  5.
Ah, I remember it now, don't know what they were fussing about:

(The following song is a new one - nice groove but rather messy at the moment..)

That venue looks familiar - is it the Hare & Hounds in Brighton? I played there last weekend.

  6. probably needs a tweak of the trussrod. With the bass in the normal playing position tuned as normal. Press the E string at the first & last frets. the distance between the 8th fret and the string should be about the thickness of a couple of business cards. Any less than that and the truss rod needs to be loosened to allow the strings to pull some relief into the neck and any more means it needs to be tightened to counteract the pull of the strings. A little goes a long way. I think setups are fully documented on the wiki (I haven't checked though).

  7. Not my cup of tea at all. It's the polar opposite to what I look for in a bass. I'd sooner have a bongo.

They need a better web site. Who uses table layout these days? and a big picture of text on each page instead of actual body text? I hope their basses are better made. The Google spider probably takes one look at the site and says - "nothing to see here, move along"

  8. My daughter became a teenager today and she already owns three basses - a lilac '71 music master, a princess purple DaisyRock Heartbreaker and a violetburst pearloid-topped DaisyRock Elite. She also thinks she has a half share in my trans purple Peavey millenium 5. I'm a bit worried she'll be the world's most prolific collector of purple basses by the time she's old enough to buy her own instruments. Oh Well. :)

  9. My basses are called:

the mustang

the jazz

the fretless precision

the jamerson (MIJ '62 RI)

The red precison

the peavey (millenium 5)

the blue ashbory

the black ashbory

the doghouse (Stentor 1950 3/4)

the ned (NS-Design CR5M)

the dano (longhorn)

the cricket bat ('86 Hohner B2A)

the blue musicmaster

the pink musicmaster
I sold the Dean Pace - that was always called "the banister".

  10. I think I read that Paul used to play high up the neck as he didn't think it sounded as good lower down. Maybe that was due to limitations of the amp he was using though. I haven't played a hofner for a while, but I recall the sound was similar to my danelectro longhorn in a way and I play that on all kinds of things.

That one looks cool in a white finish.

  11. Last nights gig had a PA provided, so we didn't bring ours - we just brought our own mics & stands. When we got there it was nowhere to be seen & we had to ask where it was. A few boxes were brought out with a case of cables there was no beary-man to set up & operate it. I learned that Ashton the company than manage to make the worst ukulules available today also make mixer amps. Oh Dear. As I'm the only member of the band with any kind of beard its naturally assumed I know about these things, so instead of warming up and chilling out I'm getting stressed out about guessing how it all connects up. Eventually found all the bits & bobs - including guitar cables to connect the monitors to the power amp. It sounds fine for the soundcheck - Steely Dan's "Do it again". Then when we start playing I get stressed out for half of the first set fiddling with the PA while playing (but doing most of the fiddling between songs) as the vocals kept cutting out making it sound like Norman Collier is guesting with us. Eventually after swapping lead & BV mics/ swapping the monitor channel with the main channel and turning off the reverb & limiter I eventually realise its the drummers monitor thats somehow causing everything to cut out. So I can only unplug it to remedy the sh*tty sound.

Started actually enjoying the gig when we did Pink Floyd's "Money" The guitarist's new all-valve Laney combo sounded fantastic, but I missed the wah pedal he usually has controlling the fx his Line 6 amp on "Stir it up". We got punters up & dancing to our original songs which is aways nice. When we finished it only felt like we'd only been playing 15mins.

Long drive home with my new Sat Nav, so mrs Pickguard was relieved of map-reading duties and we enjoyed having John Cleese directing us home, especially when we reached home and he said "You can get out now, but I'm not helping you carry your bags", perhaps he should have said "I'm not helping you carry your cab".

  12. As far as Denmark Street goes, The bass Cellar make you feel as welcome as a fart in a spacesuit, and last time I went there their policy was to have no prices marked on anything.

Vintage & rare usually has some cool stuff. Wunjo have some good stuff and some that look like they came straight out of a US pawnshop and went straight on display - so would probably be OK after a setup/new strings/refret. No real bargains in either though :)(

Its worth the trip to Camden to check out the gallery. Al & Martin are always welcoming and have great gear - and everything seems to be well set up. Don't worry if the shop looks closed when you get there, just ring the doorbell and you'll be buzzed in.

  13. http://www.brandoniguitars.co.uk/ should have the bits you need, or something very similar. They have a bridge listed as a "Violin bass tune-a-matic, Eko, chrome" @ £10.00 that might do the job.
