1.
people who use backing tapes should be taken outside and flogged with a sh1tty stick. Bogus...totally f. bogus indeed.
It really p155es me off when 'buskers' in the local high street use a bigger PA than I've used on some gigs meaning you can't get away from their stangulated Celene Dion & Phil Collins karaoke.
2. The biggest difference I could see from the spec was that the new version enables multiple songs to be loaded up concurrently, so hopefully tracks can be copied & pasted from one arrangement of a song to another.
3.
I had an Ashbory for a while, as mentioned good fun, decent tone but don't try and bend notes as you would on a normal bass... the string rolls rather than bends. Vibrato has to be back and forwards not side to side and yes (unscented) talc is the lubricant of choice. Cue smutty jokes about rubber and lubrication!
Scented talc contains oils which can corrode the silicone rubber strings. There', so I use something called sliderite that came with my ashbory (the ashbory site largesound.com supply it) - its meant as a billiards lubricant (not sure what needs lubricating and where it goes in billiards) its a little cloth bag filled with unscented talc. Not as messy as johnson's talc but after playing it still looks like you've had Pete Docherty round.
4. I did my first recording with my Ashbory a couple of days ago. I was going to use my NS upright, but my six year old was having so much fun with his lego train track all over the floor that I tried the Ashbory instead. I wasn't expecting it to come out very well as I haven't had the Ashbory long and the intonation can a bit fiddly as Alun says, but I was very pleased with how it came out the tone worked perfectly for the song. If this upload thing works here's how it sounds - This song is called "the Runner" and will probably be the last track on the new album by Obviously 5 Believers, This is a slightly rough mix that hasn't been mastered.
5. I looked at the Ashdowns - they aren't particularly light. I ended up with a single 4 Ohm Schroeder 1212L which is very small, light and loud.
6. Thanks chaps - I guess I needed someone to advise me to resist the urge to install the upgrade so I will wait and get this finished. I probably won't have time to play with the new toys in 4.1 anyway and this project is well overdue. v4.0 has crashed on me twice this morning (its usually very rare to get one crash a week on my system), I guess if I had upgraded to 4.1 already I would be blaming the new version for the crashes whereas it was probably caused by unfreezing too many very processed tracks and tweaking plugins. Anyway I have done some final tweaking to the three tracks that needed minor bits sorted and will be starting on the last two that need the bass re-recorded after lunch, hopefully I'll get those two mixed today as well. Then I'll master all 11 tracks, the band will agree on a name for the album, we'll finish the artwork and then we can send it to manufacturing.
7.
Derek Forbes is slapping a P bass in this clip- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJE3FQR6orE
Thats the first time I've seen another P bass exactly like mine. I believe fender only made them in that colour in 81/82 (unless I'm misinformed of course). Mine weights about a ton.
8. You can see Bill Leigh putting the Bass Floor Pod through its paces along with the other multi pedals reviewd at http://www.bassplayer.tv/
9. As I type this I'm downloading the new 4.1 update for Cubase Studio. I've used Cubase since version 2 on the Atari in 1990), but only recently got back into using it when I bought Studio 4 for PC. The updates are taking ages to download, but should be done in another hour or so. Any other cubase4/studio4 users here? - has anyone installed the new update yet? I have two tracks to re-mix and a few that need minor tweaks to finish the o5b 11 track album. Would I be safer waiting until the album is is finished before upgrading to 4.1 or should I install it with my fingers crossed and play with the new toys?
10. I recall hearing a (supposedly true) story of someone returning a guitar tuner to a shop for that reason. He had left it plugged in overnight and the guitar was still out of tune in the morning. Just as daft is people insisting on using their own tuners in the studio rather than at least checking with the same tuner everyone else is using and/or trusting their ears. I've heard a guitarist insist that he was in tune 'cause his tuner says so, despite the racket from the amp.
11.
You have to turn your tuning pegs as well you know! :-p
Oh that must be it - I thought I wasn't leaving it long enough
12. I have a few of them. The ADI-21 acoustic preamp I bought to use with my stratacoustic made my Dean Pace sound fantastic - so much so that when I sold the pace the buyer insisted I threw in the pedal, so I'll have to buy myself a new one now ( The green limiter enhancer is my favourite as its very transparent, the magenta bass overdrive has some nice sounds, but I didn't really get on with the tuner pedal .
13. Its a common problem - a deadspot. I found that a groovetubes fatfinger clamped to the headstock cured the problem on my jazz bass.
14. Make sure you get the fee BEFORE you go on. Don't forget to post pics with the tutu here tomorrow...
15. Maybe I'll use a similar excuse next time I'm asked something at work - "I don't know anything about unix, I'm a bass player".
16.
The shop assistants were rather unconvinced by the guitar version
The guitar one works very well - They were probably trying to use it without having read the instructions. Usually whenever I let someone try either my guitar or bass version of the SOS I have to repeat "no, over the 12th fret" about six times before they get it Then again, perhaps if they had the bass version in stock they'd have told you it was the best thing ever.
17.
....cool dude! Check out the pic! http://homepage3.nifty.com/JACK-BASS/plofile.htm
The page is called 'plofile'
18. I have a different clip on one which has guitar, bass & chromatic modes, it works OK but on a 5 string you have to switch it to chromatic mode for the B and it doesn't track the low notes very well. The fastest easiest and most accurate tuner I have is the Planet Waves SOS that shines two red LEDs either side of the harmonic node at the 12th fret. When the lights stop wobbling you're in tune. Its fiddly to start with but very easy once you're used to it. No leads required and it works even if drummers and guitarists are making loads of noise around you. I hate if I need to tune up & I don't have an SOS on me as using anything else is much more hassle.
19. When I made my Fretless precison I got a 'free' pre-slotted moulded nut with it that seemed to be a bit cheap & nasty with slots that were too wide for the TI flats I use. This was not usable, so being a cheapskate I looked around for a suitable material to make my own and found some ivory-style plastic chopsticks in the kitchen. I sawed one into short lengths and filed & sanded one length into a nutblank shape to fit in the nutslot, then I cut & filed the slots using needle files. Smoothed everything off with fine wet & dry paper then glued it in with two tiny drops of superglue just so that its strong enough to hold it in place but easy to remove in future if necessary.
20. I have a Precison with a S8 serial & the same style of logo and that came with the covers, so its surprises me that yours isn't already drilled for the cover (& thumbrest), unless of course its already wearing a replacement pg and the body is already drilled, although I can't see bridge cover holes in the pic. I use both covers on mine (the original ones that came with it), but I particularly like the pickup cover as it is the perfect hand rest for Jamerson-style playing. I prefer the stock bridge on a Precision as a badass seems to take away some of the thump, however I do like a badass on a jazz. As already mentioned a badass II uses the original screw holes, however as its bigger than the stock bridge there may be an imprint of it on the body (usually seen as a line behind the bridge) when you take it off several years later. I can't see either mod affecting the value unless its in mint under-the-bed condition, but its a gigging tool not a museum piece isn't it?
21. Behringer already make guitars with this kind of thing built in: http://www.behringer.com/IAXE624-BD/index.cfm?lang=eng Their similar "dongle-style" interface is about £40 http://www.behringer.com/UCG102/index.cfm?lang=eng I still can't see the point in installing it inside a guitar though; the hassle and limitations seem to outweight any benefits.
22. My tone comes from: NS-Design CR5M Little Mark II amp Schroeder 1212L (& My fingers ) Everything seemed to fall into place when I got the Mark bass & Schroeder. These are the most expensive bass, amp & cab I've owned so I guess while expensive doesn't necessarily sound that much better, sometimes it certainly is. I'm also really loving the sound of my '71 musicmaster with this rig which in its day was a very cheap bass.
23. They seem to get priced up at about £700 these days in shops, but I got my one for a fair bit less than that. They seemed to be going for around £400 on ebay last time I investigated. My daughter's '71 was £100. It was bought from an ad in loot. It needed a lot of hardware replaced and was stripped of its finish. Its lilac and is a lovely little bass now. I also managed to get a shell pink '97 Squier Musicmaster for £110 out of loot a few years ago, this is much more like the Fender ones than the cheapo bronco basses - these seem to go for around £180 these days on ebay.
24. We already know he's a complete liar as he admitted he previously lied about it being packed up. I'm sure he just tried to save on ebay fees by not setting a reserve, then was disappointed not to get what its worth, but thats the nature of ebay and why I wouldn't sell my stuff on ebay. He's commiting fraud as the ebay auction is a legally binding agrement to sell at the price & terms stated. I'd INSIST on paying the sale price for the bass as is and demand the address - it won't be broken that story is so obviously BS (I'm sure you know that already). You've nothing to lose by telling him you know he's lying and put the ball in his court.
