  1. The thing is, I've never had to push my setup to the point you are describing and I've had enough of the 'nice bass sound' comments over the years from people I trust to know that my sound is OK.

Actually, that's not quite true, there was one band I was in where one of the guitarists acquired a Marshall stack that I had difficulty cutting through against but that was more to do with his tone and the fact it was way over the top for pub gigs.

I've very recently changed my rig to a Little Mark III and an Aguilar GS112. I'm prepared to get a second cab if needed but going by last night's gig where I had the amp at barely 1/4 volume in a fairly large pub I'm not sure I need to any time soon.

This is just my experience playing general covers in standard pubs and clubs at sensible volumes and I appreciate that other people's circumstances may differ.

Yeah there is, you wont be able to hear yourself against a drummer, and your tone will be a pile of doodoo due to having no headroom for the bass end :D

All the pub gigs I've done over the last 20 years have been with a Trace Elliot AH100 amp and a single 15" cab and I've never had either of those problems. Never run out of headroom either.

  3. I remember reading something about this on Talkbass and if I remember correctly it was something to do with using two cabs and the overall impedance being less than 4 ohms. Even though the nominal impedance of each cab might be 8 ohms, if it is slightly less ( say 7.5 ohms ) this can cause this problem.

Hopefully someone who knows more about this stuff than I do can confirm or deny this.

    Price is [s]£150[/s] now £120

Would prefer you to collect, I am located just south of Dunstable, but I will consider delivery within 30 miles or so for cost of petrol.
I don't want to send this by courier

  5. I gig with my 2006 MIA Jazz fitted with a J-retro, cost to me new was £950 between them. I don't have any problem taking it to pubs, I've never had any of my gear damaged by punters in around 30 years of playing. If there are drunks staggering around it's easy enough to keep my bass out of harms way. Can't understand having a nice bass and not taking it to gigs.

  6. Bought my first bass 31 years ago when I was 21, I'd played a bit of guitar before that and used to play tenor horn in my school band. Joined my first band within two months although the first couple of bands I was in never made it as far as doing any gigs. I wish I'd had some proper lessons to begin with and learned some theory, I would have become better at it faster than I actually did.

JJ deserves his own thread. Two of my favourite albums are Aretha live at the Filmore West, and BB King's Live and Well. A master class in groovy bass playing.

+1 for the Aretha album, there's a really fast version of 'Respect' on it which I can never keep up with if I try to play along. There's also a King Curtis live at the Filmore West album which was recorded at the same concert and has Memphis Soul Stew and a soul version of Whole Lotta Love on it

  8. Great gig with my covers band 360 at The Dome Bar in Watford last night for several reasons.

First gig since I joined the band in March where I felt I knew all the songs well enough to relax and enjoy myself.
First gig for our new backing singer who only joined us 2 weeks ago, she did really well and her harmonies added to the band's sound.
No faffing around between songs just straight into the next one.
Friendly and enthusiastic crowd, lots of dancing right from the start.

All in all, one of those gigs that make it all worthwhile
