1. I've been beaten to it for 'aint too proud to beg' and 'tears of a clown' so it'll have to be this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sti_tuBiv5g&feature=related
2. I had one of the non-export ones for a while because I wanted a P/J type bass. Very well put together and good looking but I always felt it wasn't quite what I was after. Replaced it with an Overwater Classic Jazz which I am happier with but that's purely down to personal taste.
3.
I was getting £200 for a 4/5 piece playing pub covers 20 years ago... still getting that now! Market forces dictate that pubs around here can't pay much more than £200-£250 and many bands are getting £150.
Almost exactly the same with me. My band mainly gets £200-£250, sometimes we go out for £150.
4. This is the one you need Bilbo, very reasonably priced too http://www.sax.co.uk/acatalog/Selmer-Series-III-Soprano--125th-Anniversary---Solid-Sterling-Silver-226135846.html
5. Depped in a mate's blues band last night, had over 30 songs to learn and apart from a short run through with the drummer last week didn't have a rehearsal beforehand. Did a fair bit of preparation by playing along to the songs on Youtube and making notes. Most of the songs were standard 12 bars so that helped too. The guitarist was a dep as well so it could have been a bit ropey but in fact it all went very well, a few minor mistakes and no major disasters. At the end of the night someone from the audience told the singer how good the band was and that the guitarist and bassist were awsome and booked the band for a gig in May. Shame neither of us will be playing that one.
6. I've been told that it's more difficult to keep correct intonation on soprano than on alto or tenor so it's not really seen as the best sax for beginners
7.
Always loved trace Elliot stuff too, had to borrow a trace combo one time. Loads of bite from a seemingly small amp. Are they still in business?
There is still a Trace Elliot brand. They were owned by Gibson for a while and I think Peavey own them now. I don't think they are made in the UK any more.
8. I've always used a simple bass - amp - speaker setup. I tried a using a compressor for a while, then a Boss BE5-B effects unit and didn't really see any use for either of them as far as I was concerned.
9. I've been using my Trace Elliot AH100 head as my main gigging amp for well over 20 years, can't really see myself changing it any time soon. I've always used it with a 1x15 speaker, first a Carlsbro, then a Trace and currently an Eden.
10.
Well, they shouldn't be. Putting it all over the place destroys any attempt of a groove. There is a world of difference to doing it on purpose and not knowing they are doing it..or being oblivious to it. Mostly, this is just plain poor drumming as is not being able to hold time.. and you should pull them up on it. Then at least you may get an explaination of what they are trying to do or achieve..which will, 9 times out orf 10, leads to blank looks ..as in..didn't know I was doing that...!!!
I agree, and now I'm older and more experienced and generally play with more experienced drummers it doesn't happen nearly as much but it did teach me to lock in to the whole drum kit and not just the bass drum. I also think it's just as much the drummer's responsibility to lock in with the bass player rather than expect us to follow them.
11.
With reference to being a bad player or not I have always considered myself below average simply because I don’t seem to be able to “ lock” with the drummer And just to be clear here I’m talking about playing classic rock covers – no polyrhymic nonsense . I expect the theory is that the drummer uses the bass drum to count the bars and then uses all the other drums and cymbals to add texture to that rhythm, so it makes perfect sense to say that the bass player should “ lock” in with the bass drum as it means that you and the drummer are both counting the one and therefore playing in time. BUT almost every drummer I’ve played with ( between 20 – 30 and counting !) does not seem to use the bass drum in that way . there is a lot of rests and playing off the offbeat with the bass drum and that confuses me as I don’t know whether I should follow that or not. SO what I have done is a compromise and play to where the kick should be which tends to mean that I play off the snare and hi hat more than the bass drum. I genuinely don’t know if this is correct or not but as I say I’ve always felt that I’m cheating and not really locking at all. Its just occoured to me that the drummer is usually the band member that I bond with less socially as well ( in very general terms ) I wonder is these two things are linked as well !
This mirrors my experience to a great extent. Many drummers I have played with are inconsistent with where they play the bass drum. I used to try and listen to the bass drum pattern so I could follow it only to find that it changed from bar to bar. These days I don't try to lock in with the bass drum so much as lock in with the whole kit. one thing I like to do is 'bounce' off the snare.
12. Nice pics, there's one in there of me looking miserable as I trudge past the Go To Guitars stand. The slapping must have gotten to me by then. I think I saw you around BTW.
13. My first gig for 9 months last night after my old band ground to a halt last year and I'm so happy to be playing live again. I had two rehearsals with my new band and 3 weeks to learn the set and it all went really well, a few mistakes but no disasters. We did a few old disco tunes , Le Freak, Good Times, Lost In Music which were great fun to play and went down really well with the audience. And I get to do it all again tonight!
14. Very replaceable. At the start of this month I left a covers band because I didn't think it was going anywhere and I'd got the opportunity to join another band which is a lot busier. Spoke to the band leader on the Saturday to tell him I was leaving but would honour existing commitments and help my replacement learn the set if needed. Saw him the Tuesday after and he said he'd already found another bassist and I didn't have to bother.
15. One summer a couple years ago I drove back from a gig about 3AM just as the sun was rising ahead of me. It really felt magical to be driving into the dawn.
16.
Knowing when to stop.
Especially the guitar solo
17. Hmmm, think I might sell one of my basses and get one
18.
For the bridge we found it's possible to get away with one of those little cement mixers - no-one seems to notice!
Makes a lot of sense, don't know why I never thought of that
19. I passed an audition last week and the feedback I got from the bandleader was - I learned the material I didn't overplay I took notice of what the drummer was doing Hope it goes well for you
20.
Romantic Dragons of Ely
That's a brave choice, I've always thought Tony Goggle did the definitive version of this. Do you use the tumbledrier in the bridge?
