I had one of the non-export ones for a while because I wanted a P/J type bass. Very well put together and good looking but I always felt it wasn't[i] quite[/i] what I was after. Replaced it with an Overwater Classic Jazz which I am happier with but that's purely down to personal taste.

Depped in a mate's blues band last night, had over 30 songs to learn and apart from a short run through with the drummer last week didn't have a rehearsal beforehand. Did a fair bit of preparation by playing along to the songs on Youtube and making notes. Most of the songs were standard 12 bars so that helped too. The guitarist was a dep as well so it could have been a bit ropey but in fact it all went very well, a few minor mistakes and no major disasters. At the end of the night someone from the audience told the singer how good the band was and that the guitarist and bassist were awsome and booked the band for a gig in May. Shame neither of us will be playing that one.

I've been told that it's more difficult to keep correct intonation on soprano than on alto or tenor so it's not really seen as the best sax for beginners

Going back to a simple old school set up.

I've always used a simple bass - amp - speaker setup. I tried a using a compressor for a while, then a Boss BE5-B effects unit and didn't really see any use for either of them as far as I was concerned. -
I've been using my Trace Elliot AH100 head as my main gigging amp for well over 20 years, can't really see myself changing it any time soon. I've always used it with a 1x15 speaker, first a Carlsbro, then a Trace and currently an Eden.

[/quote] I agree, and now I'm older and more experienced and generally play with more experienced drummers it doesn't happen nearly as much but it did teach me to lock in to the whole drum kit and not just the bass drum. I also think it's just as much the drummer's responsibility to lock in with the bass player rather than expect us to follow them.

[/quote] This mirrors my experience to a great extent. Many drummers I have played with are inconsistent with where they play the bass drum. I used to try and listen to the bass drum pattern so I could follow it only to find that it changed from bar to bar. These days I don't try to lock in with the bass drum so much as lock in with the whole kit. one thing I like to do is 'bounce' off the snare.

My first gig for 9 months last night after my old band ground to a halt last year and I'm so happy to be playing live again. I had two rehearsals with my new band and 3 weeks to learn the set and it all went really well, a few mistakes but no disasters. We did a few old disco tunes , Le Freak, Good Times, Lost In Music which were great fun to play and went down really well with the audience. And I get to do it all again tonight!

Very replaceable. At the start of this month I left a covers band because I didn't think it was going anywhere and I'd got the opportunity to join another band which is a lot busier. Spoke to the band leader on the Saturday to tell him I was leaving but would honour existing commitments and help my replacement learn the set if needed. Saw him the Tuesday after and he said he'd already found another bassist and I didn't have to bother.

One summer a couple years ago I drove back from a gig about 3AM just as the sun was rising ahead of me. It really felt magical to be driving into the dawn.

Auditioning for a band tomorrow - any last minute advice?

I passed an audition last week and the feedback I got from the bandleader was - I learned the material I didn't overplay I took notice of what the drummer was doing Hope it goes well for you -
