just measured mine, width of the neck at the nut is 40mm against 38mm for both my Fender Jazzes. Radius feels a little bit chunkier than my Fenders but is not too different. It has passive controls, they are volume, pickup blend and tone instead of volume, volume, tone that the Fender Jazz has. I'd say considering it costs alot less it compares very favourably with my Aerodyne.

I'd listened to jazz before, but John Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme' was the first jazz album that really blew me away. I still think he's the boss (closely followed by Miles and Mingus)

I've never avoided open strings but sometimes I'll avoid playing any note on the D and G strings in order to get the tone I want.

There are seven of us in my band and we split the money into eight even shares. The eighth share covers running expenses like the website, CDs, rehearsal room hire, that sort of thing. Some people are more involved with running the band than others but, as others have already said, it's not worth arguing over whether someone should get more money than someone else.

Been playing for 30 years and I think I'm starting to get good at it

Well, in a moment of madness at the bass guitar show yesterday I went and bought the classic J model on the Bass Merchant stand. The build quality and finish are excellent especially considering the price. It sounds good too and there's quite a variety of tones avaible. One feature that I like is that instead of the two volume controls and one volume control that you'd find on a standard jazz, there is a master volume, a pickup blend and a tone control. looking forward to rehearsal tonight so I can see how it sounds with the band. I started playing in the school recorder group when I was 7, when I was 9 I moved on to playing the tenor horn in the school band which I continued with until I left 6th form. A couple years later I realised I was really missing playing music so I took up the bass which I've been playing for 30 years now.

I don't see anything wrong with changing the bass line if you want to but if you get too busy you risk losing the groove of the song. I often simplify the bass line compared to the recording because the subtleties you hear on the recording will often be lost in a live situation. In a large band like the OP mentioned the idea is to listen to and interlock with the other band members, not to play loads of notes. PS. I agree with what Bloodaxe says about not changing the signature bits.

I enjoyed the program, it was just a harmless bit of entertainment, nothing more.
