1. American Standard. When I was looking for a Jazz in 2006 I tried the Mexican standard, the Japanese '66 reissue and the S1. The Mex jazz didn't inspire me at all, the Japanese jazz was very nice and I would have bought it if I hadn't tried the MIA. I also have an Aerodyne which is very nice but it doesn't fit me the way my American Standard does. However, i do have GAS for a Sadowsky Metro RV4.
2. Lemmy's bass playing with Hawkwind was a big source of inspiration for me when I first took up the bass in the early 80s, especially the Doremi Fasol Latido album.
3. One of my singers told me the other day that playing an instrument is easier than singing because you don't have to remember any words.
4.
no one I know of has had an Aerodyne they didn't love.
I love my Aerodyne, it's a great bass but my US Jazz is better
5. I've never been able to play the guitar well, the strings are just too thin and close together for me.
6. I'd go for e. and call it jazz
7. How about these? Son of a Preacherman - Dusty Springfield Midnight Train to Georgia - Gladys Knight Lets Stay Together - Al Green
8. Buy a Rickenbacker, new or secondhand, you'll probably end up making money when you sell it.
9. Early 80s, I had a Columbus Jazz copy and a Carlsbro Stingray 115 combo. The Carlsbro had a 'Deep' button which used to make the room shake when I used it. Eventually I got fed up with carting it around and replaced it with a Trace Elliott AH100 and a 1x15 cab. The Trace is still my main gigging amp 20+ years later and now I have a real Fender Jazz bass.
10. +1 for Mongo Santamaria Pucho & His Latin Soul Brothers are also worth a listen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYMTA8vuEuo
11.
What about: EBS Session 60
I bought one of these two weeks ago from Bass Direct and I'm liking it very much. My objective was to buy a small combo for practice at home and for taking to rehearsals instead of my full rig and it does the job well. I've used it to rehearse with a jazz band, 3 woodwind, 2 brass, 2 guitars and a piano to contend with and there's still plenty of headroom. I was originally looking at the Eden N10 but when I played them side by side this had a smoother tone. The Eden was too trebly for my taste. Not sure how it would be for gigging with but it does have a DI out.
12. Latest batch of songs for my covers band Mama Do - Pixie Lott Move - Dreamgirls I Just Want To Make Love To You - Etta James Mister Big Stuff - Jean Knight Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder
13.
But he's not playing it.....
After the last photo was taken he balanced on his nose and used both hands to tap a Jaco Pastorius medley. Unfortunately the battery on my friend's camera died.
14. I bet none of us can do THIS A mate of mine took these photos when he went to Cuba a few years ago
15.
I used to play a Warwick Corvette Proline 5 string. When I joined my current band (old school funk/soul/jazz/R&B etc) I traded it for a Fender Jazz. The Warwick just didn't have the right 'vibe'. It was a lovely instrument though...
For reasons of 'vibe' I changed my Yamaha for a Fender Jazz after I started playing old school soul/Motown
16.
Gloria. Get easier than that.
Louie Louie
17. Heres my band from earlier this year
18. Bilbo, I really appreciate all these transcriptions, they're helping to improve my reading skills.
19.
Just beware the bossy woman with the clipboard. She'll be in a total panic and won't have a clue! Happened to us a few times.
I've met her twice. Both occasions I didn't enjoy the gig.
20. Showaddywaddy, Queensway Hall, Dunstable, 1976
21. Cousin Dupree from that album is my second favourite Steely Dan tune
22.
Roadrunner- Junior Walker- sounds simple enough but Jameson does some surprising things on this tune- as always!! Great Song- hope our sax player gets it. Bob
I love the bass intro to that song
23. Cheap and cheerful generic Chinese mixing desk, 16 input channels (NB CHANNELS 15 & 16 DO NOT WORK), onboard effects and graphic EQ. I bought this for my band about 5 years ago to get us started and have since upgraded, if you're trying to put a PA together on a limited budget this might be useful to you. Dimensions 87cm x 48cm x 13cm Looking for £40, collection or local delivery only. Cheers Spike
24. Trace Elliot 1153T 1x15 200w speaker cab Height 63cm, Width 48cm, Depth 44cm Weight approximately 25Kg In good condition but has picked up a few blemishes from gigging (see pictures). This is an excellent cab, I'm only selling it because I've recently bought a lightweight cab. It comes with a cover. Looking for £150ono Either you collect or I can deliver within an hour or so's drive from Luton for petrol money. I really don't want to get involved with couriers. Cheers Spike
