1. I had a great gig last night, one of those ones that really make it all worthwhile. We played outdoors at a bike show along with five other bands. It didn't rain, the crowd loved us, we had a sea of dancers in front of us all through our 1 hour set, we played well, the other bands were good, the sound engineer was very good and even provided a nice Trace Elliot amp so all I had to do was turn up with my bass and plug in. It was great to see all the bikers getting into our Stax and Motown set. Best one for a while.
2.
To go along with my Sky music rant, I have one more that relates to music...playing it live to be precise. "Semi-professionals" who seriously undermine and devalue live music by playing gigs (I'm predominantly talking function type gigs or background music etc, not originals) for £20-£30 each as of course they can afford to do this as they are well paid in their careers. I did a gig the other week and the bar manager says he can get a 6 piece for the money we did as a trio (£150) £50 each for 1h 30 mins straight through, which should have been two 45 min sets (never mind the cost of getting to and from the gig) and they are ""much better". Well, everyone I played with knows that isn't true, they aren't "much better" because they can't really play very well, but yes they have amazing gear, but this is about it when it comes to their set. It's hard enough making it as a working musician, but to be expected to do a gig for £15 and a meal is a joke to be honest. Does this bother anyone else? Are you somebody that does this? Is it actually just bar managers that are idiots!? Generally interested in peoples opinions from both sides of the fence.
This sort of thing happens in most businesses, not just live music. There will always be someone prepared to do the job for less than you need to charge to stay in business. One way around the problem is to market yourself or your band. Part of that involves targeting the right customers to sell your services to, the bar manager who is happy paying £150 for a band isn't the right customer for you.
3. my band plays "Band Of Gold" by Freda Payne but we always leave it off the set list at weddings
4.
The Kingdom of Heaven is within! I want the bomb, I want the P-funk!
Make my funk the P-funk, I wants to get funked up
5. Punters who stand in the doorway when I'm trying to get my gear through.
6. J neck and P sound for me, I vote Aerodyne
7. I was searching the internet for info on Fender Jazz basses and Bassworld came up in a Google search. Can't remember if it was 2004 or 2005. Been lurking here ever since though.
8. Suddenly I See - K T Tunstall One of several I've been learning for a new covers band
9. Just adding to what everyone else has said, thanks to Ped for organising it and thaks to Woodenshirt for the sarnies. It was great to see so many bassists in one place. The highlight for me was having a go on Bass Ace's double bass
10. Jerry Jemmott is definitely one of my bass heros. He played bass for King Curtis for a while. Check the tracks "Instant Groove" and the live version of "Memphis Soul Stew" for some great Jerry Jemmott bass playing. "Aretha Franklin Live at the Fillmore West" is also very much worth a listen Just found this on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Loy55z4GpA
11. I went out and bought a tenor sax today just so I could post in this thread Seriously though, I'd been thinking of playing the sax for a while now so I had a couple lessons to try it out before buying one.
12. I'd recommend Fred Wesley's autobiography (trombonist and musical director for James Brown and Parliament/Funkadelic) for an interesting and entertaining read. I recently read Ronnie Woods autobiography, he's someone who knows how to enjoy life. +1 on what everybody has said about the Eric Clapton book, I didn't even finish it. Hammer Of The Gods - essential reading for everyone who has ever wanted to be a rock star
13. My personal favourites- Ain't Too Proud To Beg - The Temptations I Second That Emotion - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles Tears Of A Clown - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles Nowhere To Run, Nowhere To Hide - Martha & The Vandellas and the intro to Roadrunner - Junior Walker
14. Lets Stay Together - Al Green The Tracks Of My Tears - Smokey Robinson Summer Breeze - The Isley Brothers Midnight Train To Georgia - Gladys Knight And The Pips
15.
I want to get a P Bass, I like the sound of them but when I tried them out I just could not get used to the thicker neck. Any suggestions guys?
That's the reason I bought my Aerodyne, plus the fact that I prefer the look of a Jazz
16. Hi-hat side for me too, makes it easier to communicate and to see what he is doing
17. I've got the non export version too. I was looking for a bass that sounded like a Precision but felt like a Jazz and after fitting the obligatory Wizard pickups that's exactly what I've got. I'm very pleased with mine.
18. At rehearsal tonight I plugged one end of my lead into my amp, the other end into my tuner and then wondered why there was no signal getting from my bass to the tuner. It's not the first time I've done it either.
19.
Thats interesting, If i put both pickups on full the volume of the D and G strings drops a lot. It's like with both on full they phase each other out. Is the wiring wrong??
You need to reverse the wiring on the neck pickup, I had the same problem when I first fitted Wizards to my Aerodyne.
20. For my pub band Twist & Shout - The Beatles Stay With Me - The Faces Pick A Part Thats New - The Stereophonics For my soul band Reach Out I'll Be There - The Four Tops, a nice Jamerson bassline to get my fingers round
21. 20 for me, 12 with my soul band and 8 with my pub covers band. That's about a third down on last year for a variety of reasons, I'm hoping it gets back to normal in 2008.
22. I only have GAS for basses, I haven't changed my amp for nearly 20 years!
23. I don't think there's too much of a problem, mainly because most people don't rise to the bait. IMO there was a bigger problem than this on Bassworld last year when a small group of people were openly seeing how far they could push the Mods. I've not seen anything like that on Basschat.
24. This is something I've wondered about too. I would have thought alot of basses at the lower end of the range just get broken and thrown away. Two related questions, does anyone know how many bass players there are in the UK and how many basses are sold in a year?
