1. A few years ago I used to go to a jazz jam at a place called the Hat factory in Luton. The regular guitar player was called Neil and he was Scottish. One evening there was a second Scottish guitarist there called Jim and I just assumed he was a mate of Neil's. I jammed on a couple of songs with him and it was only later that I found out I'd been playing with Jim Mullen. same venue, different evening I played with a drummer who was head and shoulders better than any jazz drummer I had played with before. I had no idea it was Clark Tracey.
2. we have one regular pub who use this method of payment and it takes 2 weeks or so before we see the money. It's a minor inconvenience but not enough to make us give up the gig.
3. My present covers band found me on BandMix at the ripe old age of 52 when they answered an ad I'd forgotten I'd placed. Four years later I'm doing more gigs than I ever have done before. Age range of the rest of the band is mid 20s to late 40s.
4. Back in the 70s when I was a kid I heard a song on the radio that I really liked but didn't get to hear the title or who it was by. I heard it on the radio a few more times over the years and thought what a great song but still never found out who it was by or what it was called. Fast forward to a couple years ago and I was in a discount book shop and bought a biography of Neil Young for 50p. Obviously I'd heard of Neil Young years ago and I knew that one of his classic songs was After The Gold Rush, but he'd never really appealed to me so I never bothered to listen to much of his music. Reading his biography spurred me to buy his greatest hits CD and of course that song I'd liked was After The Gold Rush
5. Done. I think you should have a 'possibly' option for the last question.
6. It doesn't seem to be dying round my way, my band gigs as much as we want to and we don't have any trouble getting gigs. Some pubs stop doing music or close down but there are always new venues to replace them. I've heard all the 'it's not as good as it used to be' talk ever since I started gigging in the 80s.
7. First time in three years we didn't play Valerie. I missed it.
8.
Yeah, but you don't play in the UK. There's a huge get drunk/fight culture in the UK so when you're in a room full of a drunken mob there can be a vibe of sh*t getting ready to kick off.
I've been playing pubs for over thirty years, I've done several hundred gigs and I've probably encountered that sort of situation three or four times.
9. I've had my two S112s for a couple months now and I'm loving them. Ever so light and more than enough bass for me. Last night I played in a large almost empty bar and with my wireless I was able to go all the way to the back of the room for a listen and was very pleased with the sound. Nice and defined and audible in the mix. What really amazes me about these cabs is how loud just one is. I used to have 2 Aguilar GS112's and I would categorize my regular venues as 'one cab gigs' or 'two cab gigs'. With the volume the S112s put out I now have several more one cab gigs, so that's my one cab solution.
10. A weekend of two halves for my band. Friday night was a pub in rural Bedfordshire which appeared to be entirely populated by New Zealanders. Landlady's birthday, lots of people, great party atmosphere, dancing barmaids, lots of fun. Saturday night played a large bar in Watford to about eight people. We still put on a good show and our overall playing was one of our best performances, just a shame there weren't many people. The landlord said afterwards ' why the f*** did I book a band as good as you for January? '
11. I always used to use a bit of VLE just to make things sound smoother. The preamp on my new bass has a Vintage Tone Control which does the same thing so I've started using that instead. I've started experimenting with the VPF but, as Discreet says, they are best used sparingly.
12. Find a trumpet player and you'll have yourselves a horn section
13. Anyone remember the one with the guy from Indonesia who got ripped off by someone from the UK, we had a whip round for him and then he went off in a huff because someone questioned his integrity?
14. Great buyer, very easy to deal with
15. From memory, the pub itself has a very small car park. If you can't get in there, there is a roundabout opposite with a car park in the middle, you can unload outside the pub and then park in there.
16. A pub in Harpenden, Herts for me. Second new year's eve in a row there, the landlady loved us so much the first time she booked us for this year straight away.
17. Until it broke down last month I was using a 500W Little Mark III to gig with. Bought a TC Electronic BH250 to keep me going and I've not noticed any big difference in ability between them to give me the volume I want.
