1. i'm in Milton Keynes.... are you coming here?
2.
Didn't Robert Moog design the active electronics? And didn't Entwistle have some interest until he decided he didn't like the bass?
Yes he did, Moog was a Norlin company, like Gibson, and so the electronics were designed by him. It was initially touted a the John Entwistle 'Spider bass' but he soon lost interest, and the product was never officially linked to him Theres some info on the design of this guitar here, although I've got considerable updates to this page that I haven't added in yet http://www.flyguitars.com/gibson/bass/RDartist_timeline.php
3. These are pretty nice guitars. I visited Kalamazoo, and spoke to people at the kalamazoo plant and elswhere - several of the luthiers there told me that they purchased them themselves - it seems amongst the people that made them they were pretty highly regarded. As I recall (although i'd have to check my records) the last guitar out of the Kalamazoo plant was his Les Paul 25/50.
4.
Not sure about your bass specifically but I always avoid the polishes like the UK version of Gibson polish. I admit it was partly my fault when I sprayed directly onto the bass instead of the cloth but the lemon-oil in it made a big round "scorch" mark in the finish of my bass.
Really? What bass was it? And what finish? Did you use it on the fretboard or the actual body or just the fingerboard? My lemon oil specifically says not to use on maple fretboards, but i've never really known why. What is the UK product called please?
5. Did your band record in the end Matt? Wouldn't mind hearing what you did with the G3 (have I got the right Matt?) Jules
6. How about a Vox Clubman?
7. G3s can be had for around £600 or so. Maybe a bit more with a case I definately prefer the G3 to the Grabber (greater tonal range) although i've heard plenty of people say they prefer the Grabber
8. My urgent need for cash is now resolved, so no price, but this is still available to trade only. You can pm me a cash offer if you like, but as far as this forum goes, it is for trade only. i'm looking for vintage amps, vintage guitars and vintage basses. I can post this by the way
9. I've had three Victories, although I only kept the Custom - the Artist was good, but I prefer passive basses. I do find the necks a little wide for my short scale thin-neck-loving fingers, but i'm sure you p-bass fans would get on with these The range was designed by Chuck Burge and Tim Shaw - Chuck talks about what inspired this bass here Gibson Victory development 1981 Gibson Victory Standard - nice bass, but I need two pups 1982 Gibson Victory Artist. Again nice, and although active, it does have a passive mode 1982 Gibson Victory Custom - my keeper. Just a great colour and sound. And the Custom is pretty rare too.
10. and then a 1971 Gibson EB3L
11. And another a 1972 Gibson Triumph bass
12.
Look at the binding
ok, heres another nicely bound Gibson it's a 1969 Gibson Les Paul bass
13. hows about this... it's a 1981 Gibson RD Artist
14.
I know grabbers are prone to this
I'd question this.... The Grabber had the same tuning keys as other Gibson basses at the time. Good quality Schallers (typically Schaller BM), and I can't see how the bridge would be the problem if it is still and stable. I never had problems with my Grabbers or G3s, all of which had the same tuner/bridge configuration. Please don't take this the wrong way, I don't wish to seem patronising, but has the bass been strung correctly? There is a right and wrong way, and if you do it wrong, you'll get tuning problems. Too often people blam their guitar/bass when it is old/damaged strings or new strings put on wrong. Please accept my apology if you knew this and have put them on correctly!
15.
I eventually had mine converted to a long scale neck
Did it balance ok? I know they have heavy bodies. Here are mine. A 1969 les Paul bass, and a 1972 Les Paul Triumph. Both short scale and fantastic players more pics here http://www.flyguitars.com/gibson/bass/1969...LesPaulBass.php more pics here http://www.flyguitars.com/gibson/bass/1972LesPaulTriumph.php
16.
Do we think collectable to some degree?
sorry no, Gibson basses, like the guitars do tend to keep their value to some extent... and people have only just started collecting the late 70s models. 80s Gibson basses are not collectable (except the flying V and maybe the victory to a small extent) But people do like Les Paul basses, as players, so they may get more collectable as they get older
17. I'm going to have to sell my Guild B302F fretless bass. Nice condition, original hardcase. This is the two pickup version. Gorgeous fretless bass Will post pics later... anyone care to make me an offer? Sorry, it has to be cash only... somethings come up that needs my money!
18.
I'm gonna search out Mick Hawksworth
Micks played on some fantastic records, especially if you like a bit of early British rock I interviewed him last year http://www.flyguitars.com/interviews/mickhawksworth.php (over 5 pages) Check these! 19. How about a trade for a fretless Guild B302?
20. Does this come with a case please?
21. He owns Ronnie Lane's Harmony H27 IIRC.. Ronnie Lanes wife gave it to him or something. And I did see him playing that with Paul Weller on a DVD at some point. Am I remembering correctly? Didn't know he played a Gibson EB3 though... is that confirmed?
22. ok, I like the orange idea - but very expensive for a backup rig.... Any other recomendations? Please keep them coming
23. i've got my main rig, but I need a new combo, for days that the whole band is squeezing in one car and space is at a premium. Our drummer is really loud though (without being mic'd) So I need an amp that will keep up with a very loud drummer, for smallish venues, and as compact as possible No other criteria is really important. My other choice is to take my bigger amps and drive myself- something I hate doing in London, what with parking, unloading etc. What would you suggest? thanks
