1. If you want flats, the labella deep talking are great. Watch that the silk windings on the ball end of some strings don't go over the saddles - labellas are un-silked at that end
2.
Late '60's, bought from a s/hand music shop in Addlestone for £20, a Vox Clubman bass; very short scale, fragile build
Bargain price (today anyway). The vox clubman (see mine here) isn't so bad. I even used it in the studio once. The rest of the session was done with a Les Paul recording bass, and I wanted an opposite to that, so I used it. Sounded great through an Ampeg B15 (but everything sounds great through a B15!) I'll agree they are poor compared to most modern basses, but they are useable. The neck isn't too thin, and despite no adjustable truss rod, you can still have a low action with light strings. The Vox bassmaster (here) on the other hand has a mega-thin neck, and to me is unplayable. Most UK-built Vox guitars do seem to suffer from sharp fret edges, and position marker dots falling out. I think many bad basses are often just badly set up/looked after, rather than being inherently bad.
3. It's got a "historically accurate 3-point bridge" I wonder why there's no binding on the black one
4. Wait, is this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/2012-GUILD-STARFIRE-SF-1-BASS-LIMITED-EDITION-2-OF-11-CHERRY-/221180920778?
5. Holy Mackerel! I wonder how close they'll be to that pic, Would be amazing if they got some Bisonics rebuilt for 2013... but i'm guessing they'll stick some very different hardware and pickups on Still, will be interesting to see
6. This is probably now traded... thanks for the offers people. PS, will have a white one (refin) but otherwise the same (slotted headstock EB3L) up for trade or sale shortly..
7. It's happened to me before - the seller used my pics, but did state that they were taken 6 months earlier by the previous seller. That didn't bother me in the slightest, but yes the new seller should really state the facts for any potential buyer to be aware of.
8. It may be that he's not sure what it is worth, so prices it high, not expecting to sell, and invites offers... Quite a common way to do business on ebay if you really don't know what to ask for something.
9. yeah, i've bid (half heartedly admittedly) on a few of those Shaftesbury tele basses. Especially the ones with the cream body. What do you think of it as a player? Does this one have a painted back of neck?
10. thanks... interesting offer, but a little too new for my tastes. Not getting rid of any of the oldies?
11. still available for sale or trade
12. definitely not a kalamazoo (see here http://www.vintageguitarandbass.com/kalamazoo/bass/KB.php) as they had old Gibson parts, and different body recesses under the scratchplate. These copy parts appeared on a number of different Japanese EB bass copies... I agree the neck might not be original to the body. Interesting to see a lefty EBO copy though.
13. make me an offer bump.....
14. Just pm'd you, but for future reference.... I'd say this was a standard UK shop price for one of these. Yes £899 is steep - but shop prices always are. (I never buy vintage basses from shops!) If it started at a pound on ebay i'd expect one to go closer to £600. Having said this, you don't get all the assurances a shop offers. Does it have a case? Original bridge cover? Are the saddles intact? These are not as desireable as the EB series basses, but there are a lot of people that hate EBs; too much mud. Despite having the EB looks, this is a very different bass - single coil pups (no mudbuckers) and no mahogany. A lot of EB haters might find the actually prefer the tone of the SB basses. They were cheaper basses to start with, but were still very well built, and finished. Not bad basses at all, but not really in the same league as an EB3. Personally if I were to spend £899 on a Gibson bass, i'd put it towards a slightly battered EB3 from US ebay. I suspect you could get one close to that price... It all depends on how you feel about buying unseen, and most critically how patient you can be. Yes, all the ones on ebay seem to be $3k, $4k or $5k but i'd bet very few of them ever sell. i'd wait for a deal like this (now gone by the way) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-70-Gibson-USA-EB-3-EB3-4-String-Electric-Bass-Guitar-w-HSC-/330839817106?pt=Guitar&hash=item4d0796fb92 - I haven't had a close look at the above by the way, i'm assuming it's as it seems on a cursory look... seems like a great deal for somebody - early january can give some real bargains! Jules
15. I know; it's this time of year... seen a few cool things in ebay this month that i'd have bid on had things been different... Come on, someone offer me an old guitar or bass in exchange for some long scale EB3 goodness!
16. Still available for sale, but also looking for trades: Anything (guitar or bass, maybe amps) pre-1982 by: Gibson Vox (pre 1970 only) Fender (competition mustang maybe?) Hagstrom/Futurama (really want a Coronado VI) Hofner Guild and probably loads others.. let me know what you've got
17. Still available bump...
18. I tried one yesterday - very underwhelmed by the look and feel of this bass. Nowhere near the quality you'd expect from a Gibson. But it did have a snappy sound, and probably would appeal to people who don't care too much about Gibson's nicer finishes. And baked maple fingerboards.... I don't like them either. They look terrible. But it did sound ok. I suspect many bass players may like these, but anyone looking for something with the vibe of an original G3 will be disappointed
19. more pics added today (see first post)... with the truss rod cover now changed!
20. This is now on ebay, but still open to people here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1970-Gibson-EB3L-bass-guitar-longscale-EB-3-/251196888721?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item3a7c805691
21. Where are you please?
22. I say make your offer - if they don't accept, fine. Who is to say what is lowball and what is overpriced. There are no absolutes in this.
23. originals - but all very simple - at the same time definately space to wig out a bit 70s style rock, 45mins ish
24. I am letting down some friends next year - 2 gigs one in Bedford, one in London, on consecutive days, 12th/13th April. Unfortunately these are quite important gigs for them in decent venues, so I will at least try and find them a dep. I might even be able to do the 12th, so the 13th is the important one. Rehearsals will be in Bedford/Milton Keynes. Paid, but not massively. Rest of the band are gnarly 40 year olds... so if you are also gnarly, reliable and available please get back to me. I am in Milton Keynes and will happily teach you my parts to make things easier...
