on the topic of Hofner strings.. which are the best for a Hofner President? IIRC the labella short scale were a little too short. Do the Hofner violin bass strings fit the President? -

I have a 1970 Gibson EB3L bass for sale. This is one of the very earliest longscale EB3s produced; WITHOUT the made in USA, so produced in late 1969/early 1970 This is a players grade bass that I have restored. It sounds absolutely beautiful and plays very nicely, though there are some cosmetic issues. See below. I am looking for trades with other vintage gear, or offers around £1000. The good sounds amazing unbroken headstock original finish on the neck, serial number intact rarer long scale version all original early 70s EB3 parts (except cavity cover and probably a few screws) The bad at some point this has had damage at the heel area that has been repaired - the body has been refinned/oversprayed to some extent - neck finish is original. This must have been some time back as there are plenty of dings, scartches and knocks... (a couple deep scratches on back - see pics) the logo is damaged (see pics) the mute is missing the 'lift up bar' - I didn't bother finding a replacement as noone ever uses the mutes. The rest of the mute is still there the truss rod cover on this bass is NOT included, I should have swapped it over before photographing but forgot. one tone knob is damaged (see pics) no case (these fit in Epiphone EBO/EB3 cases by the way) strap button moved to top horn This is a phenominal sounding bass, I assure you (unless you are a gibson hater) you'll love this. It will need restringing. Currently has flats on, but not all from a matching set

Buy this... all done http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Gibson-Parts-NOS-RD-Standard-BASS-Pickguard-with-Pickups-/261126338330?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item3ccc57b71a -
These are not bad basses at all, Gibson did a great job with the woodworking and finish - certainly quality craftsmenship in the build, but the pickups are very different to the traditional overwound Gibson EB humbuckers - these are single coils - reminiscent of the melody maker guitar pickups. The bridge is a bit obscure too if you need parts. If you like the SG shape on a Gibson bass, but find the EBO too wooly/boomy, this might be one to try.

I just measured one for you. It is tricky...from the centre of the nut to the centre of the 12th fret is pretty close to 17 3/16" - so that is exactly 34 3/8" But tape measures are pretty tricky to get decent measurements, and if you measure from the nut edge rather than centre you'll get a shorter distance too.

Its not an explorer, but heres a lefty EB2 on ebay now http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gibson-EB-2-1966-Vintage-Left-handed-Bass-Guitar-/330809018944?pt=AU_Musical_Instruments_Instruments&hash=item4d05c10a40

They definately made them in the 60s and 70s, as custom order instruments - i've seen lefty EB0, EB3 and IIRC an EB2/Rivoli.

I've not seen one as far as I can recall - i'm talking about the eighties ones. Don't know about the new ones.

Looking very nice! The one in that video sounds pretty angry... is that what people want out of them? I must admit i've never gone for a sound like that (doesn't suit my bands) I usually chosse the RD when I want a wider array of tone rather than a specific one
and a fantastic range of sounds

Whoops. Not an EB1 at all. SG Standard. Sorry....I'm easily confused.
yeah, I thought something was wrong when you mentioned the fantastic range of sounds.... The current SG basses are pretty nice too though, and probably more useful in todays bands than an actual EB1 anyway

Hi, not too many Gibson EB1 players around these days. Is yours the late 60s reissue?
