Your playing style might be relevant. If you play lot's of busy runs and fills, you'll love the shorter scale of the SG bass. If you prefer to keep things simple, with the odd slap and pop chucked in, you might prefer the Fender. Not that you can't play fast on a precision, it just hurts your fingers a bit more when you do. A middle ground might be a Fender Mustang or Musicmaster? I'd chose the SG bass (I already did - I have a nice blue SG reissue bass - doesn't have the neck markers or inlaid logo, but otherwise the same)

Mike 'Watted' a few EB3s check this http://www.flyguitars.com/interviews/mikewatt3.php After his main was stolen, he did another, that he still has (AFAIK)

I actually quite like the musicmaster and mustang. Both great for general band situations - chances are, if you turn up for a rehearsal with a new band, either of those Fenders will work better than a Gibson EB0... Especially if you turn the bass up on your amp. The Epiphone EB0 would probably work better too - its construction is closer to a Fender, although the pickup is still neckward - but if you need some mega bass to make the audiences teeth rattle - the Gibson EBs are unsurpassed.

Why so cheap? In reality we are talking about pieces of wood. I would argue that Fenders are overpriced. But yes, EB0s are a lot cheaper than EB3s of the same year - the EB3, with the extra bridge pickup suits modern day band situations better than the EB0. They sold lots of them in the 60s and early 70s, because the sound worked better back then. Todays guitarist has a swathe of effects going on, and in my experience that really works against an EB0. But they work great in bands with just a clean guitar (jazz, soul) or a monsterously heavy bassline (reggae, hip hop). Don't confuse the Epiphones with the Gibsons, they have nothing in common except shape and colour. Here are some recent clips I recorded of a 1966 EB0 through an old Ampeg B15, a WEM Dominator (played with lots of attack - you'll either love or hate this tone), and a 60s Gibson Atlas IV http://www.flyguitars.com/gibson/bass/1966gibsonEB0soundclips.php

I bought one for around £250 not so long ago. nice solid amps. I've also got the WEM dominator bass mk1, which is the same amp but with a 15 inch speaker. Not a great bass amp for clean tones, but good if you want an aggressive gainy sound

I have an ampeg B200R that I use for small to medium gigs - or ones where space is limited. Probably 6-7 years old now. I bought it about 3 years ago, for approx £200 used I did a lot of research before getting it, and i'm completely happy. 15" cone, and pretty loud, but it also has a line out if you need it. Sounds great, looks great too (vintage blue ampge tolex). Mine has been 100% reliable so far.

No, that looks legit. Butchered, but legit. The edges of the headstock are due to serious oversanding on the refin (hence no serial number) The logo and all components look correct too. It's obviously been made lefty at some point, so I'd dread to see what was under the pickguards. It probably went for about the value of the parts; i'd personally it as a bit too far gone to be worth restoring, but if someone wants a player.... (or to make it lefty again?)

+1 on the flatwound strings - you don't need any extraneous clanking making it sound all 1980s

How many has he got? I saw him playing that (or one just like it) on Friday night Perhaps that was his very last gig with it?

Marshall Super Bass 100 Mk 2 Valve
evilLordJuju replied to johnbiffa's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
A great rig for sure - I use a 1978 Superbass through a 1976 Marshall 4x12 - and yes, mostly with Gibson basses Really surprised you prefer the VBA - they have one in my local rehearsal room, and despite all the controls, I never get a sound I really like. But with the JMP I plug it in and it sounds amazing - no playing with settings required. -
Could we have a small Gibson owners bass bash, you reckon? Wouldn't mind a go on a few of these!
I'm in....

Ask them to pay you, even if they are not getting paid themselves - if they want to do it badly enough they will do.

67 Gibson EB2 - strings???
evilLordJuju replied to Huggy and the Bears's topic in Accessories and Misc
Originally they would have had flats. You need a brand that doesn't have too much silk winding at the ball end - as there is not much space between the bridge and saddle. I use labella deep talkin' short scale flats that have no silk windings at all. -
yeah, +1 on Mike Hill in Bletchley - certainly knows amps

Yes, looks very much like a Vox Panther - there was no version exactly the same as this (pickup-wise) - I think the scratchplate would have to have been changed out too - the originals are diagonal, and take up probably more space than that humbucker-looking thing.

I really rate Hagstrom basses (this weeks favourite is my coronado bass). I have not tried the new ones, but I absolutely love my 1967 Hagstrom Concord - and although it doesn't have the same pickups it is otherwise very similar. I've also got some Hagstrom concord sound clips - not sure how relevant they are to you. I would like to know how the new ones sound compared to this - really like the white one. Great basses

Really nice looking bass! I've looked at these a few times over the years, and even bid on them. Haven't been lucky enough yet. Do you know what year it is?

Arbiter guitar stand. It works, but is a bit rubbish as guitar stands go (sometimes it falls apart a bit) If you spent 5 minutes on it with some glue it would probably be fine. I have enough stands and can't be bothered
