I'd just trawl the classifieds until you see something you fancy!
Yup It's funny looking at a kind of bass I have little experience with. Found that the 19mm string spacing which caused me to sell my Yamaha TRB 6 string a few years ago feels fine on a 5. I've always been a Warwick and a Spector fan, but then there was that Shuker which came up silly cheap and the Lakland 55-01 in Guitar Guitar in Glasgow was surprisingly good. Admittedly, I didn't plug it in but the feeling of it and it's acoustic sound was great. Played the Carvin again this morning and made some adjustments just to see if I felt any differently about it, but I really don't get on with it anymore. Sounded great though!

Thanks for the suggestions. The ATK is a bit of a monster! I've played a Dingwall and they're great but might be out of my price range.
If it were me with a spare £750 I'd have snapped up this but I have a feeling this might have been more up your street.
I know what you mean. The Shuker went pretty quick which was not really surprising! I'm getting eager for the Carvin to go now though.

I think those lights were a bit OTT Lights are very cool though. I just Googled and found some DIY fibre optics as well as glow in the dark stuff, so there's a few options out there.

Examples of good use of a Whammy bar on a bass??

In your defence you only said he used one. You didn't say that he was any good. -
Examples of good use of a Whammy bar on a bass??

Yup, he had a Barrington bass. I've got (and am selling at the moment) a Carvin with a Kahler trem and it is a useful tool to have. They're not as sensitive as a guitar trem so you can play the bass and not worry about it having an effect on tone or tuning stability. -
Here’s the measurements of the Carvin. Total length: 117cm (46”) Total width: 33cm (13”) Scale length: 864mm (34”) Nut width: 46mm (1.8”) String spacing at nut: 8mm (0.3”) Bridge width: 71mm (2.8”) String spacing at bridge: 15mm (0.6”) Weight: 4.7kg (10.3 lbs) A bit of explanation about string spacing! I switched from a 4 to a fretless 6 string years ago, bypassing 5's completely. Eventually I moved to a 7 fretted and found it more and more difficult to play the Yamaha fretless. This is what's put me off the 19mm string spacing and I've had this thing in my head that it's just too wide. I played a Lakland the other day and found that I really liked it. It was only after playing it that I found that it had a 19mm spacing! So it seems that 19mm is fine for me for 5's but not for 6's. My 7's have a 17mm spacing. Why are these things so complicated

Seems like such a good bass you have to ignore the looks. Sounds are more important than looks

I'd have to throw Sei and James Tyler into the mix.

I decided to sell my Carvin LB75 with it's Kahler trem (on eBay now) as I can't get on with the narrow string spacing, especially at the nut. So I'm looking for a replacement. My problem is that the Carvin is the only 5 string I've owned as many years ago I jumped from a 4 to a fretless 6, so I don't have much experience of 5's I've tried a Lakland 55-01 and really liked it, but then there's Spector (including the Spectorcore) and others which I've probably not thought of. Not a fan of Fender or MM's but pretty flexible on anything else. Just need a comfortable bass with a primarily big, round sound as I'm a rock player at heart. Budget is up to £750 absolute max for the right bass. I haven't got anything against used stuff either. Any opinions/suggestions greatly appreciated.

Modifying Squier Classic Vibe '50's Precision

Just grab some 0000 grade wire wool and run that up and down the neck. That'll take the heavy, stickiness off of the neck and still leave lots of lacquer there. Takes about 30 seconds and makes a world of difference. I nicknamed this a 'satinised' neck and it's an option on every setup I do. Don't use sandpaper or anything other than 0000 grade wire wool as you might do some damage. -
Checked with mods before posting this My Carvin is now on here on eBay Willing to sell for £500 + free p&p to Basschatter's in the UK. If you're outside the UK then get in touch and we can sort something out. Still looking for possible trades. 5 or 6 string fretted/fretless. Get in touch if you have anything which you think might be suitable.
Think I`d have to go for the Virgo Vintage Celtic Bass, seeing as Mockingbird prohibited.
Same here. I had a snakeskin Warlock back in the day. Sliced a piece clean off the headstock on day 1. -
I'm with the 'go for it' brigade. A custom bass may be expensive and take a while to build, but the years spent enjoying it will outweigh these. I wouldn't worry about your playing either. I don't worry about mine and I definitely wouldn't win the Saturday-afternoon slapathon at the local music store Enjoy the experience of getting your custom and then the thrill of playing it.

My Jackson bass has a P pickup which I rested my thumb on. When I had a Hohner Jack bass (and I'm talking many, many years ago now) it had 2 J pickups so I didn't have anywhere to put my thumb. To remedy this, I cut the side off a hard plastic bottle and superglued that onto the bass. 2 of my basses have ramps. The one on my James Tyler (on the right) is a piece off ebony which I bought off eBay sawed to shape and stuck on with foamy double-sided tape. The one on my Conklin was made by Jon Shuker who's in Sheffield. He did a great job of getting the ramp to fit It wasn't expensive either. He de-fretted the bass for me as well.
