1. I personally don't think that the USA basses are worth that kind of money. There's a lot of choice when you come near to the £1k barrier.

Blimey, a load of hassle but well worth it in the end (I agree with you about Fenders as well).
3. I don't own a 5 string and I made the jump from a fretted 4 to a 6 string fretless. I heard Marco Mendoza on a CD called "Screaming Blue Murder" and I wanted that fretless sound within a rock format. The one and only rule about the number of strings on your bass is to remember that there are no rules. If you feel like you want a 5 or a 6 or whatever, then find one and try it out. If you like it, and you're happy with it and excited to play it, then go for it. It's your money, so who cares what anyone else thinks or says. Some other players may have the opinion that 4 or 5 strings are best, but that's only their opinion and it's fine to respect that but to ignore it at the same time. When I played the 6 in the rock band, the other guys loved the sound and didn't mind how it looked as the colour was a dark, transparent red so didn't stick out. However, they told me never, ever to wear the grey polo neck jumper I had on because it was "too jazz" (heck, it was cold that morning ). PS. I am already preparing myself for the amount of flack that's going to come my way when I post pics of my ACG 9 string.

Ok, if it was 1 and only 1 bass, it has to be "Jezebel" my Sei Offset Flamboyant 7 string. It's an amazing instrument to play and I wanted to place an order for 12 years or so. This is the first bass I pick up when I go to play regardless of the song that I'm playing to or trying to learn. P.S. I also wouldn't sell my James Tyler or Jackson 'Kip' Winger' bass or this which is nearly complete....
5. I have a Kent Armstrong pickup with the Schack pre in my Sei. The combination is a good one, but that ACG pre is very powerful and, to be honest, if I had the spare cash I'd put one in my Sei and sell the Schack (if you open the back and find a circuit board with several little switches on it, you have the Schack pre). The range of tones on the ACG is absolutely ridiculous. I've had the chance to directly compare the two pre's and the ACG's the clear winner (but then I have to put more holes into my beloved Sei bass), I had the bass wired with just a volume before and it just sounded a wee bit thin. The Schack has really improved things though. As for Wizard, I've been really tempted to ask him to rewind the pickup, but a combination of cowardice and lack of cash has prevented me from doing so. With the ACG 9 coming, that'll have to wait for the piggy bank to fill up again.
6. With a New Year's resolution to record more and write more, I've been brave and taken the step of creating a MySpace music page. Very early stages with it and my wife is going to make it look better than it does now, but at least it's a start. There's some acoustic demos of songs which are going to be replaced with bigger, louder band versions as I record them. The song demos were recorded live with a mic running into a Minidisc player, but the quality is much better than I thought it would be. There's also a bass instrumental which I recorded a while ago, a multitrack recording with some fretless, fretted and a but of tapping stuff thrown in for good measure. Again, the plan is to re-record this and replace the track that's on there. The all-important address is www.myspace.com\mdanielsmusic Any feedback/friend requests are more than welcome. Cheers, Mark
7. Yup, great track, well played and a cool Yammy John Myung Mk1 bass. I've just got a Michel Camillo CD after reading the thread about Anthony Jackson last week. It'll be a while before I can play like you though !!
8. Just an amazing instrument. I hope that whoever buys that plays it and doesn't lock it away as an investment.
9. Looks excellent (and much more bass-like).
10. A great group of basses. Something for every occasion.
11. Another one from Jerzy Drozd "The bass art company " (their words not mine !!).
12.
I'm starting to get pangs. Anyone else with custom bass pangs?
Me. I am a fellow sufferer of the custom bass pangs. I saw my bass in the middle of the lacquering process and it was unbelievably great.
13. Hutton showed me the Gibson earlier this week. It's a really great bass and very unusual.
14. Lookin' good
15. Urb - I was a bit sceptical about the piezo thing as well. I've had a play of a 4 string fretless which Alan (ACG) built which has 1 mag and the piezo bridge. The 2 signals then feed into the 2 inputs of his preamp for maximum tweakability. Being able to shape the sounds of the piezo and the mag independently and blend them (or not) just gives so many different tones. Definately a lot of fun as well
16. They were my first thought as well. It's just the routing that really puts me off.
17.
Hope you can make it ...some fab gear you got listed there!
Yup, I'll be there. Petrol's much cheaper than it was so the wife and I will have a nice drive out for a day. I'll bring as many basses as I can.
18. I know what you mean. Last week I finished an essay for my Open University stuff and there was just no way I could put it off any further. It was like writing syrup, real slow and very sticky. Hopefully, the next one will be more enjoyable. Amboyna burl is lovely stuff indeed.
19.
I really meant to take a closer look at yours, but it was in the spray booth, and discussion and other bits of wood clean distracted me....... Must only be a matter of days for yours now........ Looking forward to the photos at least....

The mighty niner. I'm looking forward to it too.
It's going to be as great as all the other ACG's
20. That looks great. Very smart, stylish and unassuming.
21. Thanks for the tip, I've just found them on eBay and bought a copy. Really looking forward to hearing it.
22. Blimey, that's one mightily flexible preamp. Bass sounds great and there's a sound for every occasion. I'm looking forward to trying that dub setting when I get my 9 and playing a low F#.
23. That really is going to be an amazing bass, both in looks and sound. That Amboyna Burl is the db's and the combination of the mags and piezo is a great one. What's the switching going to be? All I can say is that the waiting is very slightly painful. Make sure you have lots of stuff to keep your mind off of it
24. Might be able to make this one. We'll easily make it there and back in a day and I'll bring what I can
25. Great to hear that the debut has gone so well. What did the rest of the band think of the bass??
