Very cool, especially the CB.

Thanks to all who have posted. Greatly appreciated !! Russ & Funk_Bass - Great to hear that we won't be going hungry!! The chicken fried steak sounds particularly interesting. Mind you, I live in a city which batters and deep fries everything including pizza, black pudding, haggis and the legendary Mars bar, which is quite nice actually. There is one particular bit of frying I won't be trying though. A sausage, wrapped in bacon, donner meat and then battered and deep fried. The shop says they will only serve one per customer per day. The "Stoner" as it is known is about 1000 calories. ...and all of a sudden the USA seems sane...

Thanks for all your good wishes and suggestions!! Chicago Music Exchange looks pretty cool. Jen's looking forward to that one as well as there's big sofas where she can just read a book!! We're in North Hollywood so the shops are about 10 mins down the road. We're making time for music shops on every stop (as well as perfume and handbag outlets!). Wateroftyne - Some great photos there. Looks like you had a great time. Tuba City has been duly noted!! Crazykiwi - Sound like you had a great time as well. Probably wasn't so great at the time though. I've done a fair bit of planning already, but I'm also trying to get my Open University work done as well before we go so I don't get behind. Doing two courses, one on the technology of music and the other on lyrics/words in musical context. Pretty interesting stuff... We think it's going to be a bit of a gastronomic tour as well. The important question has to be asked..."Is KFC better than over here ?". I've got a copy of the Rough Guide to the USA which seems to have plenty of places to eat as well as giving a bit of history as well. Thanks again for taking the time to reply to this thread. Very much appreciated.

Geez, I was just reading about all his work in Bass Player last month. Very sad indeed.

One April 3rd, my fiancee and I are off to the USA for a month, during which time we're getting married in Las Vegas Being the understanding soul that she is, we'll be hitting a few music stores when we're there (I'll be going to perfume counters and handbag shops no doubt). Be really interesting to see what the shops are like across the pond and to play some makes I've never tried before. So I'd like to throw this question open. I've got a few ideas, but can anyone recommend any stores in these cities or can anyone think of a bass which they would like to play but are only available in the USA?? We're going to: Fly to Los Angeles Drive to Las Vegas, drive out to the Grand Canyon, drive back to Las Vegas then fly to Chicago then pick up a car and drive to NYC via: St Louis Memphis Nashville Knoxville Wytheville Charlottesville Washington DC staying 1-3 nights at each city. On the last night in NYC we've bought tickets to sample true American culture, watching the Mets at Shea Stadium As I say, I'm really looking forward to seeing the stores and what they have to offer. In LA, I'm going to be going to the Carvin store as it's brand I've read lots about but never played. Really looking forward to trying a Mike Lull as well. It's tempting to bring something back, but to tell the truth I've no set idea what. If an excellent bargain raises it's head then I'll see Anything you can bring to this thread is greatly appreciated. It's going to be a heck of a trip !! PS. I will try and make some notes as we go and post some thoughts when I get back.

Just get Mr.Shuker to de-fret it for you I was thinking of ditching my Conklin when I got my Sei. Now minus it's frets, it's earning it's keep and it sounds better than it did when it was fretted. Personally, I'd hold onto it unless you really have to sell it. It's always useful to have a backup bass and as 7 strings are still quite rare beasts you might have a job to find another one if you sold it.....

I have a 32" USA Fender Urge and it's a great, easy bass to play. Sounds great as well !!

Those fingerboards look very cool !! I think I remember that the spalted beech was scottish stuff, re-imported. It's a wild and wacky world out there... Looks like it's going to be a great bass

As someone who can't even saw straight I have nothing but admiration !!

What a great story. It's going to look marvellous when it comes back with a more suitable finish !!

Many, many congrats on the new Sei !! Just amazing how the grain popped out. Remember to put the headphones on so you don't annoy the neighbours at 1am.
Looking good! The sound instantly reminded me of Matthew Garrison's bass, not just because it's an exotic cut boutique single cut
When I collected my Sei, they also had a new Fodera in the shop for some obscene amount of money. Let's just say that if you have Sei you can look at a Fodera and not say "if I had the money, I'll get one of those"....

I've had the chance to play an instrument with the ACG pre in it and it's a totally different kettle of fish to the usual boost/cut idea. The flexibility the pre has is just amazing and because it doesn't just boost/cut preset frequencies but uses filters to play with the sound. It really has to be heard to be appreciated and then you really do need to put in the time to get used to it. All in all, just a great piece of kit

I played violin when i was at school to Grade 8 standard. I play guitar, (love 12 string acoustics!), ukulele, mandolin, drums, piano double bass (which is such a fun thing to do). I do sing as well so did all the vocals to all the recordings I've been involved in. I really should play the piano better than I do (ie. better than totally inept !!).
They do Delila and Stairway and their version of Gimme all your Lovin had me laughing out loud on my own .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSYpYoTEKV8...feature=related
I like the way they sneeked the Russian national anthem in there as well. Great stuff!!

Marco Mendoza was the reason for me switching to 6 string fretless after I heard his playing on the album "Screaming Blue Murder". The album Mendoza, Heredia, Neto Live in LA isn't too shabby either. Tommy Aldridge is a drumming legend, 'nuff said !!

I've just re-strung my Sei after a disastrous experiment with another cheaper brand/gauge of string  Now it's just un-damn-unbelievable to play. As you guys probably know, I had to wait a year for mine to be completed and it was worth every moment. When I was going to collect it, I arrived in London on the Thursday before the Tuesday it was due. I couldn't wait to see what it was like, so I got off the train at Kings X and jumped a cab to Sei HQ complete with my suitcase!! I think I surprised Martin, but hey, I'd waited a year. Usual tea and choccies were served though

That's just awesome !! The grey tint is going to look fabulous. I bet you're counting down the hours, let alone the days!!

You can find some real bargains in Cash Convertors... As you're into Lizzy, you must check out the latest incarnation of the band with John Sykes and Scott Gorham. There's a live album called "One Nigth Only" which is unbelievable. Marco Mendoza is the bassist.

Shuker "Pub/Stealth Bass" - An All Black 33" Jazz Bass
7string replied to eude's topic in Build Diaries
All sounds very cool. Now all you have to do is wait..... I've played one bass with a 33" scale and it was hardly noticable against a 34". Wondered why I could get around it so quickly. I thought I was really playing well until someone told me it's scale length was shorter.... -
I have nothing but admiration for people who can do this kind of stuff... I can't even saw straight
-
Like the new logo !! What a great thread as well. Hopefully, the weather will get better so you can get the Hagstrom finished...
-
Very cool gear!! The Hartke 3500 was the first decent amp I ever played through. It was a lot louder and better sounding than my Peavey TKO 80 I had at the time.. (ah, those weren't the days)...

You'd need a big room for that bass balalaika!! ...you'd also need a big car to collect it...
