1. It's querky but it's cool
2. The grain of that walnut is going to come out really well
3. I've got a Fender Urge Mk1. 32" scale and I love the thing !! It's in Burgundy Mist, NOT PINK
4.
I had an NS Bolin 5 string and it was beautifully light and balanced... just didn't get the spare string Now if I could find a 4 string
OOOOOOO !! Those NS Bolins really are fantastic basses I think they didn't have the strap button behind the top horn, but instead had an extension which spun out from behind the body. The strap then attached onto there, putting the balance point further towards the headstock.
5. Yup, I've seen one of those in the flesh. It was well over £5,000 (may even have been £6,000). Unfortunately, it burst the Fodera bubble a bit for me as it wasn't as marvellously made as I thought it was going to be. But, hey, what do I know. It was sold in just a week or so
6. Hi John, I have a Sei 7 string which has a walnut core and comes in at just under 10lbs. It really doesn't feel that heavy though. I'm a massive fan a Sei Basses and was for a dozen years or so before I placed an order. They really are beautiful instruments both aesthetically and ergonomically. I can also recommend a Comfort Strapp. It's a wide, soft neoprene strap which really does help with a weighty bass. That strap lives on my Conklin 7 string which weighs a full stone (I weighed it tonight before I answered the singlecut bass thread). I have a nice, comfortable Sadowsky strap for my Sei. That's the only problem with Sei Basses. No merchandise !! I suppose they got it the right way around by worrying more about the instruments and less about putting their name on straps and caps and such things
7. I'm sure the ACG will compare favourably no matter what you compare it with The level of workmanship and the preamp in Alan's basses has nothing but praise heaped upon it...
8. Just to post this onto this thread... I bought a bass from one of the builders on this very thread. I looked at the website http://www.bas-extravaganza.nl and just thought it was great. Using Babelfish, I managed to type in Dutch and translate his messages back. For those that were just too difficult or obscure, I e-mailed my Uncle who's been living in Holland for the last 30 years, so he came in very handy. Anyway, here's what I bought: This is the Kinderbasje or "Child's play" bass and it was built out of the spare pieces left over after building the "proper" basses. I love the shape and it sounds pretty good too. The neck profile is a sharp V, but extremely playable, and there are letters instead of side dots so I'll never forget where "G" is. It's a great little bass and I thank BigRedX for starting, and continuing, this thread. It's been a real fun and interesting read PS. If you're interested, all of my basses are under the thread titled "7strings stuff" in the "Bass Porn" section.
9. Blimey, that's one powerful small rig The cab is positively featherweight. I have a 1x15 Mesa Boogie Road-Ready cab which weighs 14kg more than the Epifani and is rated at just 400W. Poor thing doesn't get out too much nowadays !! It used to belong to Mark King and when I interviewed him a year or so ago, he was pleased that I was looking after it Again, damn smart rig !!
10. Probably was my GT7 (John de-fretted and made a ramp for it). It's extremely heavy and I resorted to a Comfort Strapp (yup, two p's!!) to be able to play it standing up for more than 10 minutes !! I had the bathroom scales handy and the bass clocks in at 6.4kg or just over 14lbs or just over a 1 stone. First time I've ever weighed it. Now I'm not surprised I needed a neoprene strap Just weighed my Sei 7 "Jezebel" as well. That weighs just 4.5kg or just under 10lbs, positively size 0 in comparison to the Conklin !! Back to the question though: I've played a couple of singlecuts and I didn't notice any weight or balance problems. Never even thought about it until now, that's how much I didn't notice From what I gather, it's more important where the fulcrum, or pivot point is in relation to the neck and body. Get that balance point wrong and you end up with serious neck dive (or completely the opposite of course !!). Both my Conklin and Sei have a long top horn in common, this puts the fulcrum further up the neck and this decides that they balance well. Unfortunately, the Conklin may balance well, but it's still bloomin' heavy Any of the makers mentioned here will no doubt have sorted this design problem before offering their basses for sale, so I wouldn't worry unduly !! Just get on the phone or 'net and go bass shopping
11. That's a very cool bass. Kinda pimped retro.. that quilt is nicely subtle...
12.
but hey - she'll be ready when she's ready. M
Just like a woman
13.
Booked next Wednesday off for delivery, if you lot are lucky, I may show you some pictures then.
Geez, a week's long time for delivery. Have you got a postman walking down from Moffat with it
14.
I can imaging the phone call to the design department now... "What the hell is this that you've sent me?" "It's the scaled up version of that model you sent us" "Idiot! That was a piece of sky out of my jigsaw puzzle! The design was on the back of the fag packet that was in the envelope!"
15. Jazz basses are not my thing at all.... However, I've played a Sadowsky Metro and it was extremely good. Sadowsky have an incredibly loyal following and if the Metros are anything to go by, I can understand why.

New Fenders

Fender have been re-hashing the P and J for so long now and the price increase may finally make people wake up and take their business elsewhere. All they seem to do is play with the hardware and the wiring, giving new buzzwords to the alterations. Surely, Fender can come up with something new alongside the 'classic 'stuff...
17. Oh man, they're both blinkin' horrible... I just think that lever on the Sterling makes it look kinda cheap... The Bongo is uuurrrr, not matter which colour it's in (mind you, I've never played one).
18. I think I saw this on some photos from NAMM. Me also thinks it's based on a Silvertone guitar...

Its coming..the magic is definitely coming.
Fantastic news Proves that 9's can be used as workhorses and not just brought out for special occasions !!
23. Sounds like a great way to get an active/passive P bass. Congrats on the mods
24. There's been some great words on here about Wizard Pickups http://www.wizardpickups.co.uk Maybe they could rewind the pickups and then put them back in your covers ?? Also, ACG now have another version of their superb filter-based pre. It's designed by ACG and made by John East http://www.acguitars.co.uk That would definately be a great combination and save routing
