Just going to throw Sei Bass into the mix www.seibass.com. This is my Offset Flamboyant 7 string which has a lot of curves. The other Sei designs are 2 kinds of singlecut, the non-offset Flamboyant, the original and the limited-edition Millenium. Close-up photos courtesy of London-based Graphic Designer, Gareth Jones

OOOO, is that a BEX ??... Very cool... Congrats on your eBay triumph !!

I'm fortunate enough to have both as well... I've got the Tascam BT Mk II and it's a great little unit. There is a line in where I can plug the iPod in and jam to that. I've only used the CD training part of it once and I managed to get it to slow a section down of a track so I could learn it. I haven't tried to do the same with an iPod track.. My practice amp is an old Trace Elliot Boxer 15 complete with the funny carpet covering.....

From the pic it seems as though anyone's hearing is in danger if they go over to your side of the stage... I admire the health & safety warnings around the 9 string...

Shuker 5 String Precision- Picked up today!!

Congrats on placing the order !! When it comes to the waiting time, you just have to trust your luthier and let him get on with it. If it takes a little more time, then it takes a little more time. You're going to be using the bass for many years to come, so 6 months or so isn't that long to wait. I suppose as more orders come through then more staff may be needed but for a small, specialised company that may not be the best thing. So customers will have to wait longer to ensure the product quality stays high. The time will fly by. I waited very nearly a year for my custom bass and it went quite quickly, apart from the last week before collecting it ! -
Those Conklin Groove Tools basses have to be THE way into 7 strings... They're well built, sound great, look good and don't cost a fortune.... Oh yeah, and they're not made anymore, so if you've got a chance to get one (especially left handed) seriously consider it !! I bought mine for US$800 on eBay about 5 years ago. As I've had the Sei 7 made, I had the Conklin it de-fretted & ramped by Mr.Shuker.

No point in going through with a deal unless your 100% positive about it !!

I found that when I had basses with 3 band EQ's, I just had them flat all the time and never used them !! Also I saw another Sei with no controls at all and I liked the simplicity of it. The bass has a standard size electronic compartment as a safety net just in case I change my mind. There's a sneaky little coil tap button on the edge of the bass as well as an XLR out and the standard 1/4" hole.. Even better, pulling up the volume knob turns on the purple LED's on the side of the neck...

Very cool !! I had my Conklin GT7 de-fretted & ramped by Jon Shuker and similarly it's great job. I have some photos being returned to me this week, so I hope to post them soon !!

No problem !! I don't have an avatar as cool as Dood's which has the terminator Dan holding Doodle !! Here's the lovely 'Jezebel' as featured on p.14 of this months Guitarist magazine !! I do like this complete fluke of photo with one of our dogs, Luna, in the background !! Anyway, before I detract further from your thread, I've finally made the decision that I am definately going for a 9 string, one string higher and one string lower than my Sei 7. A very good Zeller double bass is now in the 'For Sale' section of this very forum !! Keeping to the question posed in this thread though, I really feel at home on a 7 now, and feel that the extra low end opened up by the low F# is going to be beneficial (especially as I missed having a low Bb the other night !) after asking the question (to Dood among others) as to how and why it's used. The higher string gives a little more scope for chords. A good mate of mine, thinks it's a little loopy and it probably is. But I feel ready for the challenge of playing and feel that with the experience of a custom build behind me I'm ready to answer the questions which a luthier might put my way. It's important though to point out that it takes some serious thought before getting an ERB. It took roughly 14 years or so to progress from a 4 to a 7 and then a further 5 years or so from 7 to 9. As Dood has explained as well, it takes a special set of circumstances to even consider dipping a toe into the ERB waters. Even when you have such an instrument you're then foreever fielding the questions of "why" from musicians and non-musicians alike !!
You do have a killer bass Dood, tis nice to see someone else choose a custom with a maple fretboard. I've actually been in contact with Brian @ Low End and (provided my Smith shifts sharpish) I will be purchasing that jazz I mentioned above. Fitted with a more narrowly spaced bridge of course We were talking about perhaps a custom build, and the prices are sooo good it seems almost a waste not to shell out just a couple of quid more and go for the full works with a 7 string. However, that's not on the cards just yet... Will keep you informed as to the progress. Mark
Those Low-End basses to look extremely cool. I think they're involved with Chris Benavente somehow. Best of luck on shifting your Smith quickly and grabbing a new bass !! I also have a custom with a maple fretboard, how could you forget !!

I've been trying to decide whether to sell my upright to finance a new electric bass. Well now I've decided and my whole double bass package is now offered for sale. However, instead of jumping onto eBay, I thought I'd offer it here for a couple of days first... So here we have an Andreas Zeller, 3/4 size double bass of solid wood construction. This is the most common size for double bass as the 4/4 (full size) versions are simply massive !! I bought the bass early this year from the very helpful Glasgow Violin Shop. The bass is already fitted with a bridge pickup, the 1/4" out of which can be seen just below the bridge. Not only that, but the bridge itself is adjustable using the thumbwheels in each leg of the bridge. The bass stands approx 6 feet tall (180cm)without the spike being extended and has a scale length of 41" (104cm). Also offered for sale is the bow from Upton Bass in the USA. This bow is in the French style and has a 100% ebony frog, stainless steel wrap and un-dyed black horsehair. I bought this as it was highly recommended by players in the USA. Finally, is the Ingles stand also from Upton Bass in the USA which you can see in the photos. This stand has a handy bow holder (again, see photos) is fully adjustable and keeps your bass ready to play. It also saves having to lay the bass down and exposing it to the dangers of being stood on and tripped over. Here some photos: So in summary:
Andreas Zeller 3/4 size double bass, fitted with an adjustable bridge and a bridge pickup !! French style bow from Upton Bass in the USA. 100% ebony frog, stainless steel wrap and un-dyed black horsehair !! Fully adjustable Ingles double bass stand from Upton Bass in the USA.
This double bass, bow and stand are offered for sale as a package. The bass itself is in great playing condition, the bow and stand are as new !! The price for this whole package is £1000 o.n.o. I have a letter from The Glasgow Violin Shop valuing the bass for insurance purposes at £1450. Please note that, unfortunately, pieces will not be sold separately If you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me, either through Basschat by PM or posting on this thread, by e-mail at or by phone on 0785 234 8166 Collection is preferable or I will deliver, free of charge, within a 100 mile radius of Glasgow or £30 nationally either on or before 3rd December. Otherwise, it would have to be after 14th December (due to availability of transport). This date, however, (14th December) may change but I will keep the new buyer fully informed.
