Could it be that I am now content with my gear?
7string replied to franzbassist's topic in General Discussion
It is not the desination but the journey to an ultimate setup that is important !! -
Is there a bass line that you just couldnt do?
7string replied to Bass_In_Yer_Face's topic in General Discussion
I managed to work out the opening riff to the opening track of Dream Theater's latest release Systematic Chaos (In the presence of enemies Pt 1). I even wrote it down for a guitar-playing friend of mine.. It took a while but I really enjoyed working out this finger-twister. I don't know why, but I have to find something that really interests me to have a go at working it out.... -
Very cool !! Many congrats !!

New - clear and slow - four finger picking techniques video
7string replied to urb's topic in Theory and Technique
Is this similar to the rasgueado guitar technique ?? It's very cool for getting maximum notes out of minimal effort and I'm all for that !! Very tricky technique and very well presented. Many congrats !! Now I have to go practice.... -
Explaination of Tonic, Subdomiant and Dominate 7th
7string replied to EmmanuelFolo's topic in Theory and Technique
The tonic is another name for 'root' or the key that a piece is in. Subdominant is the name for the 4th note of a major scale as well as the chord built upon this note. Dominant 7th is the 7th chord built upon the dominant (5th) note of a diatonic scale. In the key of C (or where C is the tonic) the chord is built from G using the same formula as any major or minor triad (root, 3rd & 5th). With 7th that includes F. The construction of the chord can also be thought of as 1, major 3, perfect 5, flat 7th which starting from G gives B (major 3rd from G), D (perfect 5th from G) and the flat 7th (F). When you see a chord described as note7 (such as G7) is always means dominant 7 (1, 3, 5, b7).as opposed to major 7, minor 7 or diminished 7. So in C, the dominant 7th chord is G, B, D and F. This chord has a sound that makes it want to resolves to the tonic chord, so G7 to C major (the leading note B, resolves to C). Hope this helps !! -
Congrats on the cool, new addition !!

Yup, that's me. I look a little older, a little heavier but still as devastatingly handsome I'm just glad I managed to get another Urge Mk1, they really are superb basses. It's cool to get something in print especially in Guitarist (or Bassist) as they must get so many submissions for those features. I've got some cool pics of the basses being sent up to me this week. I'm definately going to put them up in Bass Porn as there have been a few changes since I put them on Bassworld (and as I didn't take them the photos are a lot better !!).

Cool !! Good to know that you found what you need .... Bass shopping can be so much fun

One of my students has one of these and it's one powerful bass !! His ATK is built like tank with a big, deep neck and has some abalone inlays. It's really great bass and I can see why so many people go for them...

Cheers !! It's cool to see a bass 'invading' Guitarist magazine. Hopefully, they'll increase the amount of bass coverage instead of giving space to the latest reincarnation of the Strat or Tele

I had a Fender Urge Mk1. Unfortunately, I had to sell it, but managed to buy another earlier this year... April '96 was the issue, with Freddie Mercury on the cover. I bought a copy on eBay a couple of months ago, just for old times sake !!

Guitarist magazine have used my submission for their "My Guitar is...." feature. It appears in the December issue, which has Jimmy Page on the cover. I received my issue today as I'm a subscriber and it's there on page 14 It comes 10 years and 6 months after my submission for "My bass is.." was printed in Bassist magazine..... Where did the years go
Oh... Thanks 7string, I'm flattered... All the best with that and I hope you'll tell us all the details when the build starts, or if it doesn't And just to let you know it was your Sei build diary that ultimately convinced me to go for a Sei bass as my latest build.
Cheers BigRedX, that's nice to know. My build was in turn influence by another Sei 7 build... The bass which I've been in discussions about is built, so it should be a matter of payment and shipping, fingers crossed !! By the way, my Sei bass is featured in this month's Guitarist magazine. Page 14 of the issue with Jimmy Page on the cover....

Well thanks to BigRedX I've been in touch with one of the luthiers on this thread. Conversations are at an advanced stage....I don't want to say more in case I jinx myself.....

Darn cool-looking bass !!

I know this may sound a bit bland, but how about playing all the basses that you can get in your deal and make a list of the good and bad points after you've played each one. Even after playing 3 or 4 it's possible to forget what the first one sounded/felt like !!
-
I recently got one of my basses back after being de-fretted. I forgot how good a fretless bass can sound !!

...and then you have the Sadowsky Metros as well. At mentioned before, at this level you could have a bass made for you either by Jon Shuker, Alan at ACG or Robbie at RIM. A quick delve around this site and you'll find examples of basses from all builders. As bassists we're spoilt because there is a load of choice outside of the mainstream brands. I would say have a good look around, play loads of basses and don't rush into anything. An extra week or so of effort will translate into an instrument you are truly happy with instead of the "if only" thoughts going around your head...

Agreed !! There seems to be this theory that more strings = more difficult to play. I don't think this is true at all, it's just a matter of getting used to it. OK, the necks a bit wider, but that's about it. As for the "there's something a bit 'look at me' about those wide necked monsters..." from David Nimrod I can fully understand that !! However, for me personally, that's not the case at all because I can't go out and play gigs (I don't even stand in front of the mirror with it...... OK, but only once or twice !!).
-
Like others, I have nothing but admiration for people who can create from raw timber !!
-
It's now got a Shuker ramp as well !! I'm just waiting for some superb pics of the bass so I can post the before and after shots. There's pics of my other basses as well so I'm going to post them all together. We now return to our original programme !!
-
What a generous guy !! He must have been very impressed with your ability to find the basses he wanted. Congrats on the new addition !!
-
Probably and a darn fine job he did as well. Funny thing is, the bass sounds much better without it's frets

0000 grade wire wool works as well. Takes about 20-30 seconds to get rid of that 'sticky' feeling. One of my students mentioned this very problem on Monday night. I got out the wire wool, rubbed it against the neck a bit, he checked it, needed a little more and problem solved. Took about 5 minutes from just mentioning the problem to the problem being solved...
