Sorry to hear about both of those. Good luck with the surgery. I hope it's nothing too serious.

It‘s like witnessing a snuff film. You can‘t unsee it.

Isn’t it though?
-
I really enjoyed that a lot. Thanks.

I‘ll be sure to pass that along 😎

We did the opening show of a run of a 50s Rock’n’Roll show last night. Given that we only had three days to rehearse on stage (people had prepped at home beforehand) it all went pretty well. The tricky part isn’t the music, it’s the transitions between songs and does-singer-A-do-schtick-here-or-do-we-just-proceed type hesitation. Given that, it went OK. A special mention in dispatches to the Jerry Lee Lewis - a great guy 82 YEARS OF AGE! He disappears during one of the medleys for so long that I’m beginning to think that something has happened, and then reappears in full drape jacket with tiger skin lapels, climbs onto the piano and completely (in a very good way) steals the show with his rendition of Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ on. A nice, modest guy off-stage who shows us youngsters (I am a sprightly 58) how it’s done. Respect!

This year, my summer is well decent, which is normally never the case. I‘ve got a run of a Rock’n’Roll show which started last night - 4 shows a week till the end of May, immediately followed by 6 weeks of an ABBA show - both shows are in my hometown - result. Then a two week gap and a further 7 weeks in a theatre out of town (8 shows a week), by which point it’s mid-September. Please forgive me showing off, but like I said, this normally never happens to me, so I’m well chuffed.

On a side note, the woman in the photograph is my cousin Elisabeth Kenny, master Theorbo player. Sadly, I don’t really know her and am not sure if we‘ve ever met.

Speaking as a very primitive player, who plays pretty lightly, I found it a little tricky getting it quiet enough to not distort, but loud enough to provide sufficient output for the sound guy. Having the gain low (even with the output turned right up) left the signal a bit quiet for the FOH. But, as soon as I played any harder, it began to clip. I got there in the end, but was a fine balance. BTW, while looking in my manual, I spotted the model number for the bridge pickup: Shadow SH951 - the problem is that it comes with a jack socket rather than a mini jack plug, so you‘d need a male jack to make mini-jack adapter. https://www.thomann.de/de/shadow_sh951_basspickup.htm

And how did she sound? Forgive the question, but somebody had to ask. -
Band of Friends gear stolen in Germany

Bar stewards! I‘m on a number of secondhand instruments FB pages in Germany. I‘ll keep my eyes peeled. Do you happen to know what part of Germany they were in? -
Wanted ad posted. Thanks for your attention and advice guys.

I am interested in trying Rotosounds out, but as @Burns-bass pointed out, I’d probably be better off posting a wanted ad here.

According to the seller, the strings have only ca. 50 hours of use and weren’t really his thing (possibly because of the problem with the A string). The E, D and G strings are all fine.
-
My apologies, I only just noticed your question. Thanks again fro your help and advice. The synthetic string is the E from a set of Presto Nylonwound Ultralight 3/4.

I'm on a budget and have seen a set of Rotosound Double Bass strings (which I would like to try out) on Ebay Small Ads, going for a good price. The seller is very open about the A-String being a bit dodgy - "The E, D, and G strings are in very good condition; only the Monel winding on the A string is broken in several places. You can still play it and everything sounds normal, but it's not optimal for your hand and fingerboard." I asked him for a clearer picture of the "breaks" and he sent them promptly. "Hi Paul, I don't know if you can tell anything from the photos. It's playable, but the sheathing is broken there – unfortunately, that seems to be "normal," but the strings are rough, and you can feel it on your fingers and the fretboard." What do reckon, worth a punt? €119,- as opposed to a new price of €269,- OR is the A-String unplayable? Unfortunately Thomann don't offer the strings as singles.

What I was hearing was more of a distortion type sound than rattling from the bass itself. There is a minimal amount of string noise which may have exacerbated the issue.
-
Thanks guys. After a good deal of fiddling around with the gain pot and other controls on the pre-amp, that got rid of almost all of it. I was surprised at how far down I had to turn the gain, but I think that might be most of the issue. I‘m going to grab a new battery today and see if that helps.

I'm notitcing some distortion in the lower notes on the E-String. However, the low-batttery light isn't lit. Has anyone else experienced anything similar and could they give me any tips? I've tried it on two different amps and it happens on both. I don't want to immediately assume that the unit is faulty.

An excellent tribute to Nick. Well done.

Yep, I noticed about ten years ago when buying my first class D amp, a Genz Benz, that when looking at spec, my eye started immediately dropping to the bottom of the list. What does this sucker weigh?
