  1. Did they have string-through bridges back then? I honestly didn’t know.
  2. Thanks for your feedback - the one I mean looks more typically p-bass-ish and is the cheapest one they do (a lot less than the JP-55OP). I was in a jam and needed something to practice on while visiting my family in the UK (long story 😃). The JP-55OP also has a 45mm nut. I'm curious as to whether the perceived string spacing lower down the neck is purely a product of the string spacing at the bridge or if the spacing of the cuts in the nut also vary (are perhaps set a little wider?). Any ideas? Thanks again for your input.
  3. Hi All, after much hemming and hawing between an MB-5 SBK Deluxe Series and a PJ-5 HTR Deluxe Series, I plumped for the MB-5 SBK Deluxe Series. The bass is fine, but I find the string spacing a bit narrow at the low end of the neck. Not a big deal, but... My question is, has anyone had both basses and is the PJ-5 spacing any wider? They both have the same width of nut, but I couldn't find clear info regarding spacing at the bridge. Thanks, Paul
  4. Once again, I am delighted at the kindness of this group. However, I have just taken delivery of a Harley Benton 5-string from Thomann. Thanks @StingRayBoy42for your kind offer of assistance.
  5. Love it. It almost looks like a sort of solo. And yes, I agree, it is exactly what we should all be doing.
  6. Perhaps your intention (i.e., what you want out of this as an experience) has changed over time? Perhaps the others' hasn't. It's always good to be honest, and if you're not getting what you want out of it any more, maybe let the others know and look elsewhere. There's no need for acrimony, just clarify everyone's position and make a decision.
  7. Good idea. I've now done that. Thanks for the suggestion.
  8. That is really very kind of you, especially offering to massively retune an instrument, but having practiced the material a lot, it has to be a fiver. Thanks so much for the offer, Paul
  9. In theory yes, but when I factor in the petrol, plus it is a big ask of one of my siblings, the Thomann basses make more sense.
  10. Calling @Bunion - you are a very naughty man. If I could figure out a way to get this up to the Wirral... hmmm Thanks for taking the trouble, much appreciated, Paul
  11. Doh! Thanks for the response. At least I can take a look 👍
  12. Can anyone remember what the term is that they use on Thomann for instruments that are damaged (I don't mean B-Stock, worse than that) and that they sell off cheap as chips - or should I say even cheaper than cheap as chips, but that have often proved to be playable?
  13. Thanks Paul, that is super kind of you. I am gradually gravitating towards the same solution.
  14. Guys, thank you so much for your kind offers, but despite my own statement at the top of the thread, having worked on the material a lot since then I have realised that I really do need a 5-string. I'm not the greatest sight-reader, so I'm essentially learning lines/patterns that would require a different position on a 4-string (granted, a useful exercise, but not with the time constraints I am under) and it's muscle memory I am working on for this gig. Thanks again and sorry for wasting anyone's time.
  15. I set myself up for that, didn't I? 😂 It would be churlish to turn down such an opportunity. Those prices are good, but if I buy, then probably a Harley Benton from Thomann, starting at 109 quid. Thanks for the suggestion though.
  16. Thanks, but it's just a stop gap while I'm here and, lovely as they are, a little out of my price range.
  17. Hiya, I did consider that. It just feels a bit... mean of me? I think I might just go ahead and buy one to leave with one of my siblings that I can use on future visits. Or maybe resell at a small loss.
  18. Sorry, I expressed myself poorly there. I meant the sweeps going along conveyor belts or through passages that wouldn't have been possible on a dolly. The cuts are, as you say, quite short and choppy.
