Surprised by what I heard on Radio 2 today

I haven't heard about this, but it's certainly piqued my interest. Love SRV, can't abide the Shakin' Stevens stuff of my youth. I'll have to try and youtube that. -
I stretch new strings a lot, by pulling on them several times along their length, when I put them on. I also press down just before the bridge. Maybe it's only psychological on my part, but I hardly have to re-tune after that. I change strings every 4-6 weeks, depending on how busy I am and I generally put on the new strings directly before a gig. It would be very unwise of me not to stretch them before going under stage-lighting and those kinds of temperetaure changes.
Bob Babbitt spoke a lot on this subject. It's a rats nest. Slutsky slanted his entire thesis against Carol Kaye to create controversy to sell his book.. and maligned her until a bunch of MT headed rumor parrots picked up the Slutsky Torch and tried to illuminate the bass world with their new-found cache of net guana... and then start threads to weave a web of lowdown delusion. Due Diligence, EZ... Research what Babbitt experienced about the music biz... http://bobbabbitt.co...aying_Bass.html ...
That was a really interesting article. Thanks for posting.

Plantation Lullabies is also an excellent album

Some P-bass (if the video is to be believed) action here on Cars and Girls. One of those tunes that has such lovely bass movement in relation to the melody. http://youtu.be/jEJdfDD4dVg

Aaaaah, this feels like unexpectedly running into an old friend. Welcome back this thread! -
Not if your technique is good enough.
That's me knackered then 😘
IME from owning an all steel Born To Rock Bass, the tuning is actually more stable because the body and the strings (made of similar materials) act more evenly to changes in temperature compared with a wooden bass.
Really. That's interesting, I hadn't thought about it like that.
And another website of some quite different basses.... Another lot of different designs
There's some fun-looking stuff there. I like the one with f-holes, but what are those 8-pole pups all about then?

Wouldn't tuning with temperature variations be a bit of a nightmare?

Keep the playing simple. You also won't get as much sustain out of your strings as usual. It's usually less of a problem than you might think. I've done gigs at skiing events where, even under lights, the stage temperaure was barely above freezing. Just keep your hands warmed up between songs. I did try one of those little metal boxes that hunters use. They're lined with something fireproof and you leave a slow-burning piece of charcoal in them. They fit in your pocket. To be honest, I didn't really need it in the end though.
To be fair, if you had put Martika down as having one hit with Toy Soldiers, I would have been none the wiser as I had never heard the song you posted. I was so sure about Toy Soldiers, so I looked it up and found she had a couple of hits.
With me it was just the opposite, I knew Toy Soldiers but had no idea who'd sung it. Love Thy Will be Done, I knew from heavy rotation on MTV in hotel rooms and I'd never heard of that other song. We live and learn, eh? 🙂

Here's one that I haven't seen in the thread so far and satisfies all the criteria as a one hit wonder. The Lone Ranger by Quantum Jump. http://youtu.be/hchOYs_d_Bw
Martika had a number 5 with Toy Solldiers and 7 with I Feel The Earth Move
Yeah, sorry about that. I wasn't aware of those until I read Wikipedia 5 mins after posting 😊

Also this, although it was co-written with Prince was Martika's only UK hit. Love Thy Will Be Done. I think it's just beautiful, hence the embedded video. http://youtu.be/10V_Z0_udjg

Sorry if this one is already in there somewhere, but "da-daa-daa-daa" by the German band Trio.
I saw a guy from work once while heading out of a Buddy Guy gig. I asked what he thought to which he replied "The playing was OK but there's no place for humour in blues." That was why I'd enjoyed it!
Your workmate was of course completely correct in his observation. Nobody could seriously think that BB King was joking when he sang Nobody Loves Me But My Mama (and she could be jivin' too).

I sympathise with the OP. I work mostly in theatres where there are usually a dozen guys auditioning for one spot. You have to develope a thick skin, which isn't always easy. I do this for a living, so it's also not just about hurt pride. On one occasion, not only did I not get the gig, but when the guy who did get it wanted me as a sub, he was told that I was on a blacklist that the musical supervisor (who was only there for the auditions and didn't work in the theatre) had of guys who shouldn't even sub on the production. This stuck in my craw for several years until I was asked to audition for another show in the same house as a sub. I got in and, over the following years, got to hear loads of stories about what a kn#b the musical supervisor was, how his decision-making process was totally flawed and how some of the other guys that also landed on the blacklist had been playing in that house for years in numerous productions. None of the guys in the band, including the MD, understood why any of us had been blacklisted. I know it's something of a platitude, but try not to let it get to you. Very often the reasons are so banal and have little or nothing to do with the playing.

Definitely try some of the Albert Collins and the Icebreakers Albums. The live album 'Frozen Alive' is killer.
