??
:thu: 99.9% of the average audience don't know a bass from a guitar, and the only people who really give a damn anyhow will be other musicians looking to make themselves feel better by doing down your choice of gear...
+1,thats exactly what ive found over the years

Got around £300 to spend..... what do I go for?

squier, either vintage modified or classic vibe series, both give a great sound and value for money as well. -
I used Ashdown for ages (although not any more) and good amps I say. But a lot of them are actually Chinese these days.
or american!still a british owned company though cant say that much these days!
-
Another ashdown fan!that must be at least ten on here now i never use the sub-harmonic on my amp because basically i cant tell the difference from when its on and when its off!According to the manual 'with the sub harmonic in, an octave below the notes being played are produced'.
I wonder if you're maybe thinking of RCF.
oops yes i was ignore my previous post

RCL drivers are one of the best you can buy imo.i would think twice before changing that.
-
if i had tried the vmp-bass at the same time as the cv 60's p-bass i think i would have picked the vm,because it has a more fatter sound like a precision.probably due to the slightly fatter neck imo. Both great basses though
-
I bought a vintage p-bass off eubassix,(cheers dave)and gigged it for the first time last night and the quality of sound i got from this bass was amazing.nice and punchy with a lovely growl as well.this has got to be the best money ive ever spent!in the past i have tried fender highway one p-bass and mim p-basses and my vintage is certainly as good if not better than the fenders.so why pay out hundreds of pounds just for a "name" on the headstock when these cheapies are just as good!
OK so took a gamble and bought one!!!! on first try out seems impressive (ive got it to replace my ashdown LG1000 which i feel is underpowered) Now my dilema is which cab to use it with??? Ive got a markbass 2x10 4ohm (210P) which i used with the LG1000, and ive also got a ashdown mAG15 (8ohm) cab. I bought this 15 as i felt the MB didnt give me enough low end, but didnt want to spend a lot on an experiment! I think i'll gig with the 15" but cant use both due to different ohms. Any thoughts??
you will now which cab to keep after you have tried both out seperately at gigs.you might not get enough top end out of the 1x15 so you might need another cab to go with that,ie 2x10 8 0hm.Or one abm 4x10 cab and sell your other two!
spotted the head on soundslive really tempted but ideally would really only like one cab as opposed to two! have spotted the eminence 15" speaker though to replace the one in the cab and its rated at 4 ohm so might do that!? [/quote Dont think it would give you that much more volume. But if you do change the speaker i would be interested in your old one.
Obviously British owned/Chinese manufactured provides less economic benefit to the UK than British owned and manufactured or even foreign owned/British manufactured but when the bottom line is price, manufacturing chases cheap labour. I would still buy a Chinese Ashdown over a Behringer for instance but as rule I try to avoid buying anything made in China As well as what's already been mentioned Hiwatt I think, The Ashdown Klystron range, Status and a whole load of small luthiers like Overwater and Shuker. Sadly this is the pattern of British manufacturing. We excel at producing high quality or bespoke products for niche markets. We seem to produce huge quantities of great designers, engineers and inventors who start up small companies but once they get to a certain size and level of success ( as bassmansky stated ) they get bought up by foreign companies.
+1. my ashdown head was made in uk,my cab in the prc,but will change that to neo classic ,made in uk.right or wrong there is just something i like about the words 'made in uk'
-
get the mag 600 real value for money especially the uk made one.
-
is all trace gear still made here?Although not a british company anymore.
So what do we actually MAKE over here, and where do those profits go once your cash is in the till of the retailer? Take Ashdown as an example, yes they are a British company, but aren't MAGs made in China? Therefore does buying a MAG over something from a company like Behringer really do much good for 'keeping it British'? Cheers, James
The mag and abm range are made in china but ashdown is a british company so all profits come back to our country.Dont want to get involved in politics but it does not take much to work out that the more successful british owned companys there is the better this country would be!sadly everything gets bought up by foreign investers and that is what will happen to ashdown in future years.

Are people jealous of ashdowns success?we love to knock our own prouducts in this country!(Not like the french or germans)Not everyone will like ashdown, far from it, but all we hear is how unreliable they are or how wooly they sound.its so repetitive it gets boring! All i know is every make of amp goes wrong at some point but we dont seem to hear much about those, perhaps its because the amount ashdown sell they are likely to get one or two duffers.Thats my two penneth worth anyway,im now off to buy a behringer as i want something reliable PS,well said flatwound
-
the mag 600 is a good price online at the moment.its only wooly if you dont know how to set it up properly
